Casper Leaps Chow Late to Bag Lead

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Joel Casper hopes to score another big win at Majestic Star.
Joel Casper hopes to score another big win at Majestic Star.

In a race for the chip lead between two Illinois natives, Joel Casper bagged 263,000 to top the 228,500 of Bob Chow at the end of Day 1a of Mid-States Poker Tour Majestic Star. According to Casper, he made a huge call with ace-high on the river during one of the final hands of the night to vault past Chow on the leader board. Both players have more than $600,000 in live tournament cashes, and each is hoping to repeat a past success: both have claimed a victory worth more than $100,000 in this very venue.

Other notables among the 25 to bag at end of the 14-level grind: World Series of Poker Circuit ring winner Bryan Schultz (160,000), Mike Mustafa (158,000), Brian Zimcosky (156,500), Mike Deis (105,000), Brandon Meyers (70,000), and WSOP bracelet winner Chad Holloway (61,500).

A total of 122 runners registered for the first of two Day 1s, and many fell by the wayside over the course of the 10 hours of play. They included Nicholas Aranda, Zal Irani, Paul Bianchi, Mike Holm, Bryan Moon, Larry Ormson, Brett Kuznia, David Gutfreund and Leon Morford, who finished second at this event in March.

Irani met his end painfully at the hands of Holloway when the latter pushed all in from the blinds after Irani bet 6,000 from late position on a board of {6-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}. Two players in between folded, and Irani splashed the rest of his stack in.

Holloway: {5-Hearts}{3-Spades}
Irani: {6-Clubs}{6-Spades}

Holloway had the best of it with a straight, but he needed to dodge the board pairing. A harmless {2-Spades} fell, and he collected his opponent's stack.

Deis, meanwhile, spent the majority of the day at the top of the chip counts, but a late setback cost him a huge chunk of his stack. He called a five-bet shove from Schultz with {a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds} but was unable to catch Schultz's {q-Spades}{q-Clubs} as the board ran out nine-high. Still, if Deis can book a cash he looks likely to catch Kou Vang at the top of the MSPT Player of the Year leader board, as Vang did not make a Day 1a appearance.

Day 1b begins on Saturday at 4 p.m. local time here in Gary, Ind., so be sure to come back for more coverage right here on PokerNews.

"I Have the... Horriblest Hand"

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Bryan Schultz
Bryan Schultz

We found Bryan Schultz shoving all in over a bet of 25,000 from an opponent on a {6-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} flop. A couple of the players started chuckling when Schultz's opponent didn't snap-call, since the bet appeared to be only a few thousand more.

"I am so bad," Schultz's opponent said. "I should not even be here. I have...the horriblest hand. I'm calling."

Schultz: {a-Spades}{a-Hearts}
Opponent: {3-Hearts}{3-Spades}

Schultz got some more outs to fade as the {4-Diamonds} gave his opponent a straight draw. The {q-Clubs} river was safe, though.

Schultz is an Illinois resident with more than $270,000 in live cashes.

Chow Feasts on Hebda

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Joseph Hebda
Joseph Hebda

Bob Chow was in the small blind, and he check-called 3,400 from Joseph Hebda on a {5-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} flop. A {9-Spades} turned, and Chow checked again. Hebda bet 7,500, and Chow put him all in for about 9,000 more. Hebda called it off.

Hebda: {8-}{8-}
Chow: {a-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}

Chow had flopped a gutter but turned a much more disguised winning hand with a pair of nines. The {6-Clubs} bricked off on the river, and Hebda headed for the exits.

Bianchi Triples Up

Level 7 : 250/500, 50 ante
Paul Bianchi, pictured at the WSOP.

Jim Boone opened for 1,500 in early position, and Paul Bianchi shoved his last 3,500 in from middle position. Mike Holm, who recently reentered the tournament, made the call on the button, and Boone called as well. The two active players checked down the {8-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{k-Hearts}{6-Spades} board, and Boone showed {a-Clubs}{6-Clubs}. Bianchi had it beat with {7-}{7-}, and Holm announced that he had "nothing."

Bianchi had a fascinating run in the Main Event this summer after he and his friends put him on red eye after last minute blackjack session before the final Day 1. You can hear about his story in an interview with PokerNews.

Big One for Holloway

Level 4 : 100/200, 25 ante
Chad Holloway
Chad Holloway

Chad Holloway bet 7,000 after an opponent checked to him on a board of {7-}{6-}{5-}{3-}{7-}. His opponent made the call, and a few swear words escaped his mouth after Holloway showed {7-}{6-} for top boat, besting {4-}{4-} for a straight on the turn.

Meyers Off to a Fast Start

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante
Brandon Meyers (left), pictured at a previous event.
Brandon Meyers (left), pictured at a previous event.

We found Brandon Meyers all in from the cutoff before the flop against an opponent on the button who already had about 6,000 out there.

"Alright," the player said with a shrug, dropping his chips into the middle.

Meyers: {a-Clubs}{a-Spades}
Opponent: {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds}

The first four cards were {q-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}, giving Meyers' opponent a few extra outs since a jack would give him a straight. The river was a {3-Clubs} though, and the Minnesotan already has double the ammunition with which to work.

Welcome to Day 1a of 2014 Mid-States Poker Tour Majestic Star Casino

Ken Baime claimed the win last time the MSPT was here.
Ken Baime claimed the win last time the MSPT was here.

Day 1a of 2014 Mid-States Poker Tour Majestic Star is set to kick off here at 4 p.m. local time in Gary, Ind.

Today marks the MSPT's second stop at Majestic Star this year. Back in early March, Ken Baime defeated a field of 301 to pocket $77,681 and a shiny new trophy when the MSPT first came here. The Day 2 field included heavy hitters such as Jason Smith, Matt Alexander, Matt Kirby, John Hayes, and Kou Vang. Hopefully, we see all of those familiar faces and more.

All players will begin with 20,000 in chips today, with blinds beginning at 50/100 under the Allen Kessler-approved structure that's been adopted by the tour since its first stop here. Levels will last 40 minutes, with breaks given every three levels. The plan for today is to play 14 levels, and each player is allowed one reentry per starting day should things go awry during the first nine levels.

Stay tuned to PokerNews as we bring you all of the live action.
