Welcome to Day 1a of 2014 Mid-States Poker Tour Majestic Star Casino

Ken Baime claimed the win last time the MSPT was here.

Day 1a of 2014 Mid-States Poker Tour Majestic Star is set to kick off here at 4 p.m. local time in Gary, Ind.

Today marks the MSPT's second stop at Majestic Star this year. Back in early March, Ken Baime defeated a field of 301 to pocket $77,681 and a shiny new trophy when the MSPT first came here. The Day 2 field included heavy hitters such as Jason Smith, Matt Alexander, Matt Kirby, John Hayes, and Kou Vang. Hopefully, we see all of those familiar faces and more.

All players will begin with 20,000 in chips today, with blinds beginning at 50/100 under the Allen Kessler-approved structure that's been adopted by the tour since its first stop here. Levels will last 40 minutes, with breaks given every three levels. The plan for today is to play 14 levels, and each player is allowed one reentry per starting day should things go awry during the first nine levels.

Stay tuned to PokerNews as we bring you all of the live action.

Meyers Off to a Fast Start

We found Brandon Meyers all in from the cutoff before the flop against an opponent on the button who already had about 6,000 out there.

"Alright," the player said with a shrug, dropping his chips into the middle.

Meyers: {a-Clubs}{a-Spades}
Opponent: {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds}

The first four cards were {q-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}, giving Meyers' opponent a few extra outs since a jack would give him a straight. The river was a {3-Clubs} though, and the Minnesotan already has double the ammunition with which to work.

Martocci Coolers One

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

We didn't see the action, but we found the dealer counting out 18,500 from the stack of a player holding {8-Hearts}{8-Clubs} on a board of {a-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{8-Spades}{10-Clubs}{3-Clubs}. Unfortunately for the player, Anthony Martocci had flopped a better set with {a-Hearts}{a-Spades}, and Martocci collected nearly all of his opponent's chips.

Gutfreund Flops his Ace

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

David Gutfreund check-called 1,050 in the cutoff against a button opponent in what appeared to be a three-bet pot on a flop of {6-Spades}{j-Clubs}{a-Spades}. Both players checked the {j-Diamonds} turn, and the {8-Hearts} completed the board. Gutfreund bet 1,625, and his opponent announced a call. Gutfreund flipped {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}, and his opponent showed she'd been outdrawn with {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds}.

Morford Gets Value with Trips

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

From the blinds, Leon Morford bet 2,000 on a board of {3-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{j-Hearts} against a lone opponent. The player called, and he called a further 3,500 on the {6-Diamonds} river.

"I gotta call, I think you just have the four," the player said.

"Ahh, I've got the six," Morford said, tabling {a-Clubs}{6-Hearts}, good trips and more than he needed to best the {7-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} of his opponent.
