Bogus Crushes Day 1b Field

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Casey Bogus accumulated chips with impressive efficiency.
Casey Bogus accumulated chips with impressive efficiency.

Casey Bogus lapped the field on Day 1b at Mid-States Poker Tour Majestic Star. He bagged 316,500 to notch a wide chip lead over second-place finisher Julie Cornelius, who finished with 233,500. Bogus is also well clear of Day 1a leader Joel Casper, who ended with 263,000 on Friday night.

Others among the 23 who survived the 14 levels of play included Jason Martens (119,500), Mike Holm (88,500), Michael Younan (77,500), Paul "Walnuts" Bianchi (72,000), Dustin Hargis (53,500), and David Snitkin (43,500). Martens made a deep run in the last MSPT stop here in March, finishing 14th, while Holm is coming off of a second-place finish at last week's MSPT at Meskwaki Casino.

West Olive, Mich., native Bogus is a relative unknown on the tournament circuit, sporting just two recorded cashes. He got off to a fast start early in the day and kept things rolling, as he boasted a stack of around 116,000 at a time when the next biggest stacks were around half that number.

Busting short stacks was Bogus' forte. In one seesaw pot, he called from the cutoff when Mike Shin opened to 2,400 and saw Mark Atkins shove all in for 7,200. Shin called, and Bogus put him all in for another 15,000 or so. Shin reluctantly called it off.

Bogus: {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}
Shin: {a-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}
Atkins: {j-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}

The dealer spread a flop of {a-Spades}{4-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}{5-Clubs}, giving Atkins the triple up but Bogus the larger side pot.

Bogus busted Jose Ortiz in a preflop all in when Ortiz failed to improve {q-Spades}{10-Spades} against Bogus' {k-Spades}{j-Spades} shortly thereafter.

Shin and Ortiz weren't the only ones hitting the rail and failing to make Day 2. Joining them were former MSPT Player of the Year Patrick Steele, TJ Ryan, Brett Kuznia, Brandon Jones, "Wild" Bill Romer, Zal Irani, and Ryan Hickey.

The 48 remaining players will reconvene tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. local time to battle it out on Day 2 until a champion is crowned. Be sure to come back and tune in to PokerNews to find out whom that will be.

Snitkin Doubles Late

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
David Snitkin's bullets served him well.
David Snitkin's bullets served him well.

Bryan Dillon open-shipped for 33,000 or so in early position, and David Snitkin called off his stack of 22,900 from the cutoff. Everyone else folded. Snitkin revealed first the {a-Spades}, then the {a-Clubs} beneath it. He was of course far ahead of Dillon's {q-Clubs}{j-Spades}. The board came {9-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{6-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}, and Snitkin doubled up with his full house.

Atkins Goes From Swearing to Celebrating

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Mike Shin busted out in Level 11.
Mike Shin busted out in Level 11.

Mike Shin opened to 2,400 in the hijack, and Casey Bogus called in the cutoff. Mark Atkins put his last 7,200 in from the button, and Shin made the call. Bogus instantly announced all in, and Shin reluctantly called off his remaining chips.

Bogus: {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}
Shin: {a-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}
Atkins: {j-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}

The dealer spread a flop of {a-Spades}{4-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}, giving Bogus and Shin trips.

"Are you f****** kidding me?" Atkins whispered, but the dealer followed with a deadly serious {j-Clubs} turn that gave him a boat. The {5-Clubs} preserved his lead, and he tripled up while Bogus collected a larger side pot from Shin.

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Jason Martens won a huge pot with queens.
Jason Martens won a huge pot with queens.

We found Jason Martens with a three-bet to 10,000 in front of him and facing an all-in shove from Tan Nguyen. The total was 63,800, and Martens made the call.

Martens: {q-Spades}{q-Hearts}
Nguyen: {5-Spades}{5-Clubs}

"I thought you had ace-king," Nguyen said with disappointment.

The board ran out {j-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{6-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}, and Nguyen sent his hefty stack over to Martens.

At another table, Brandon Jones went bust.

Idrovo Off and Running

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante

Richard Idrovo, pictured at this event in March.

Richard Idrovo just bought in and was given a seating assignment. Moments later, we found him all in for just under the starting stack of 20,000 on a board of {k-Spades}{4-Spades}{8-Diamonds}. A player had bet 2,800 from middle position and been called by the big blind, and that's when Idrovo shoved from under the gun. The middle player jammed as well, and the third player folded.

Idrovo: {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}
Opponent: {a-Spades}{10-Spades}

Idrovo was fading spades, but the {10-Hearts} gave his opponent a few extra outs. A red {2-Hearts} was a harmless river though, and Idrovo couldn't have asked for a better start.

Three players checked to the cutoff on a {6-Hearts}{a-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} flop, and he bet 3,300. Two players folded, but Bill Romer shoved all in and was quickly called.

Romer: {9-Clubs}{9-Spades}
Cutoff: {a-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}

Romer had a cinch after the {5-Diamonds} turn.

"Course, you never know where I'm at," he said as he swept up the pot. "That's why they call me 'Wild' Bill."

Ryan Hickey won a big pot with jacks.
Ryan Hickey won a big pot with jacks.

Ryan Hickey had 1,700 in front of him in middle position preflop, and a Mike Holm had made the call. The small blind put in about 9,000, and Hickey shoved all in. Holm folded, and the small blind quickly jammed as well.

"You have aces?" Hickey asked, concern in his voice.

The player showed {a-Spades}{k-Hearts}.

"That's what I thought you had," Hickey said, tabling {j-Clubs}{j-Hearts}.

The jacks held when the board ran out {5-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}.

Keeping Up With the Joneses

Level 3 : 100/200, 0 ante

Brandon Jones, pictured at MSPT Meskwaki.

Brandon Jones bet 2,000 from the cutoff after a single opponent checked to him on an {a-Clubs}{6-Spades}{k-Hearts} flop. After Jones' opponent called, both players checked the {4-Spades}, and a {k-Spades} fell. The middle-position player checked, and Jones tossed 5,000 out, half of his stack.

"Ahhh, man," Jones' opponent said. "Do you have a king man?"

The player tossed out a call, and Jones did indeed have a king, though he had {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds} for a boat. His opponent flipped {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}.

Players are on their first 10-minute break of the day.

Welcome to Day 1b of 2014 Mid-States Poker Tour Majestic Star Casino

MSPT Majestic Star
MSPT Majestic Star

After Joel Casper (263,000) and Bob Chow (228,500) set the pace by bagging the top stacks in yesterday's Day 1a, we're set to watch Day 1b kick off here at Mid-States Poker Tour Majestic Star. Cards are scheduled to be in the air at 4 p.m. local time here in Gary, Ind.

Plenty of notables failed to bag stacks last night, including Nicholas Aranda, Zal Irani, Paul Bianchi, Mike Holm, Bryan Moon, Larry Ormson, Brett Kuznia, David Gutfreund and Leon Morford, who finished second at this event in March. Also, March champion Ken Baime has not yet made an appearance to defend his title. Plenty of MSPT regulars were also absent, so we hope to see a bigger crowd for today's flight.

All players will begin with 20,000 in chips today, with blinds beginning at 50/100 under the Allen Kessler-approved structure that's been adopted by the tour since its first stop here. Levels will last 40 minutes, with breaks given every three levels. The plan for today is to play 14 levels, and each player is allowed one reentry per starting day should things go awry during the first nine levels.

Everyone who makes it through today will join the 25 survivors of Day 1a for the championship race on Day 2. Stay tuned to PokerNews to find out whom that will be.
