Welcome to Day 1a of Mid-States Poker Tour Meskwaki Casino

Jonathan Olson won nearly $100,000 the last time the MSPT was here.

After a three-week hiatus, the Mid-States Poker Tour is back with the tour's third stop of the year at Meskwaki Casino in Tama, Ia. In Mid-October, Ryan Dykhouse conquered a field of 517 to win the last event MSPT Firekeepers in Michigan for $124,500. MSPT Meskwaki will likely feature a considerably smaller but still significant field, as the $300,000 guarantee was easily surpassed at both previous stops here this year, which each featured first-place prizes in the neighborhood of $100,000. Those were won by Matthew Anderson of Nebraska and Jonathan Olson of Iowa.

Olson has become a somewhat familiar figure on the tour since his win, so we will likely see him and a host of other MSPT regulars shortly after the tournament kicks off at 4 p.m. local time. The Allen Kessler-approved structure will once again be in use, featuring a 20,000 starting stack and blinds beginning at 50/100. Levels go up every 40 minutes from there, and players will be allowed to reenter once on each of two starting days.

As always, PokerNews will be on hand to document the progression of play, so stay tuned as the live updates begin flowing.

Hinkle Reloads; Boone Takes an Early One

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Blair Hinkle was all in with a very short stack when we arrived at his table, and he was quickly eliminated as his {k-Hearts}{j-Hearts} failed to catch the {j-}{j-} of an opponent despite a flop with a {10-}{9-} giving him some more outs. He headed for the registration desk.

At another table, Jim Boone had just taken his seat when he got involved in a pot with Brian Zupancich. On a board of {10-Clubs}{j-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{5-Spades}, Boone fired 3,000 when checked to, and Zupancich took awhile before folding what he said was two queens.

"First hand!" Boone exclaimed, tossing {k-Spades}{k-Hearts} into the middle and collecting the pot.

Tour-sponsored pro Matt Kirby, Phil Mader, and Will Givens have all entered the tournament during Level 2. Kirby is coming off of a destructive run during the Canterbury Park Fall Classic, during which he won two events, including the main for $84,502, and placed sixth in two others en route to claiming the "King of the Classic" title. Mader and Givens have about $430,000 and $800,000 in tournament cashes respectively, so they're players to watch for as well. Both have had success at the World Series of Poker the past two years, with Mader surviving several memorable TV clashes with Phil Ivey in a deep run in 2013, while Givens snagged a bracelet this summer in Event #45: $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em. All three players have found themselves at a final table already during this Mid-States Poker Tour season.
