Null Bags Day 1a Lead at Running Aces; Sandness Makes it Through

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Andrew Null has the lead after Day 1a.
Andrew Null has the lead after Day 1a.

Andrew Null sealed up 309,500 to bag a healthy lead at the end of Day 1a of Mid-States Poker Tour Running Aces Harness Park. Null leads the 29 players who survived through 14 levels of play out of a 156 total entries. Mark Sandness, who took down the tournament the last time the MSPT rolled through town, began his title defense with a strong showing, as he bagged 189,000.

Null owes his stack primarily to one massive pot, the biggest of the night. In one of the first hands at Level 13 (1,000/2,000/300), Brady Nissen had about 160,000 to start the hand, and he got it all in holding {q-}{j-} with a board reading {4-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{j-Clubs}. Null covered him and had the better hand with set of sixes ({6-Hearts}{6-Clubs}). Null only to fade a queen and jack on the river, and while paint hit the board, it was the {k-Hearts}, and Null dragged the enormous pot while a disappointed Nissen hit the rail.

Null had about 350,000 at that point, and he coasted through the last two levels of the night.

Sandness arrived just before the first break and got things rolling early by busting Adam Lamphere's first bullet. He bet-called a {q-}{2-}{4-} flop with {q-}{8-} before calling Lamphere's subsequent barrels on the {a-} turn and {k-} river to reveal an all-in bluff of {6-}{5-} for a missed straight draw. Sandness continued to accumulate chips despite a bump or two along the way and ended with 189,000.

Others joining Null and Sandness in the line-up for Sunday's Day 2 included Rodney Colson (247,000), Lamphere (197,000), Ervin Bjerga (187,000), John "JohnnyGstaks" Hayes (148,500), Peixin Liu (118,000), Jason Seitz (107,500), Jeff Bryan (56,500), and Steve Belland (47,000). Belland and Bryan finished third and second, respectively, at the MSPT Grand Falls back in August.

Plenty of notables failed to make it through, but they can take another crack on Day 1b if they so choose. Among those to fall were Jason Zarlenga, coming off of a win at MSPT Potawatomi for his second MSPT title; Tony "Lazer" Lazar, Aaron Johnson, Jeremy Dresch, Brandon Meyers, David Gonia, Nick Pupillo, Allen "Chainsaw" Kessler, Matt Kirby, Lance Harris, and Brett Kuznia.

"Chainsaw" tried grinding his trademark short stack game, but couldn't find a spot to double up. He ultimately jammed it in for less than 10 big blinds with the {8-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} and was called by Nissen's {a-Diamonds}{6-Spades}. A {9-Hearts}{k-Clubs}{2-Spades}{j-Clubs}{k-Diamonds} run out spelled the end for Kessler, who comes into the tournament coming off of one of the biggest wins of his career.

Kuznia, meanwhile, continued his incredibly poor run of luck in MSPTs when he jammed in {j-}{j-} on a final board of {a-}{7-}{7-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{j-Clubs}, only to see Mario Hudson turn over {10-Clubs}{8-Clubs} for a straight flush.

The tournament resumes with Day 1b at 4 p.m. local time on Saturday, so be sure to come back to PokerNews for more coverage.

Null Takes Chip Lead in Monster Pot

Level 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Brady Nissen's top two was no good.
Brady Nissen's top two was no good.

Table 29 just saw by far the biggest pot of the night.

Brady Nissen had about 160,000, and he got it all in at risk on the turn with the board reading {4-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{j-Clubs} with {q-}{j-}, top two pair. Andrew Null covered him and had the better hand with set of sixes ({6-Hearts}{6-Clubs}), and he needed only to fade a queen or a jack on the river. Paint hit the board, but it was the {k-Hearts}, and Null dragged the enormous pot while a disappointed Nissen looked on.

Hayes Busts Hartmann for Monster Pot

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
John Hayes, pictured at a different event.
John Hayes, pictured at a different event.

John "JohnnyGstaks" Hayes bet 4,900 from early position on a {4-Spades}{j-Spades}{q-Diamonds} flop. Todd Fisher made the call from the button, and Tony Hartmann counted down his stack before coming along from the big blind. On the {3-Diamonds} turn, action checked to Fisher, who bet 14,400. Hartmann again called, but Hayes shoved all in for 41,100. Fisher considered for a bit before sliding his cards to the dealer. Hartmann counted his stack again, grabbed his cigarettes, and called off for 28,100.

Hayes: {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}
Hartmann: {10-Spades}{3-Spades}

Hartmann was behind Hayes' kings, but he had the outs he hoped to have since his flush draw, two pair, or trips could all win it for him. A black card hit, but it was the {5-Clubs}, no help to the veteran Minnesota player.

Sandness Outdrawn

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Mark Sandness
Mark Sandness

Three players checked to Mark Sandness, who bet 5,000 from the button on a flop of {k-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{3-Hearts}. Bruce Yang tossed in his last 7,000 or so from the small blind, a third player folded, and Sandness quickly called, flipping {k-Spades}{10-Spades} for top two.

"One time?" Yang asked, showing {a-Hearts}{8-Hearts} for a flush draw.

An {a-Clubs} turn gave him increased outs, and a {5-Hearts} river filled his flush.

"You Called a Lot of Bets With that S***!"

Level 7 : 250/500, 50 ante

With the community cards having come {a-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{3-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}, the small blind bet 5,000 and was raised to 10,000 by big blind Gennady Shimelfarb. A third player folded, and the small blind called. Shimelfarb turned up {5-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} for a turned gutshot, and neighbor John Morgan immediately let him have him it.

"You called a lot of bets with that s***!" he said with a laugh.

"You play the four-five, you have to see it through," Shimelfarb replied with a grin. "You can't just give up."

Wazwaz Reads Meyers' Hand

Level 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
Brandon Meyers was true to his word.
Brandon Meyers was true to his word.

We found Brandon Meyers with a bet of 20,000, in front of him, enough to put his opponent all in with about 5,000 to spare on a board of {j-Spades}{8-Spades}{10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{10-Spades}. The player thought for a bit before ultimately laying his hand down, and Meyers slid his cards forward.

"Two kings good," Rob Wazwaz said casually.

Meyers flipped over {k-Diamonds}{k-Hearts} before the dealer could sweep them up.

"I told you before I would show you if you guessed them," he said. "I'm an honest man."

Hudson Busts Kuznia With Vicious Cooler

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante
Brett Kuznia, pictured at MSPT Majestic Star.
Brett Kuznia, pictured at MSPT Majestic Star.

According to Brett Kuznia, he three-bet to 2,500 after one player raised to 800 and got one caller. Only Mario Hudson came along, and both players checked a flop of {a-}{7-}{7-Clubs}. After a {9-Clubs} turn and {j-Clubs} river, Kuznia said the two eventually got it all in after a min-bet by Hudson, and Kuznia showed what he thought was a sure winner with {j-}{j-} for a full house. Unfortunately for him, Hudson had gone runner-runner straight flush with {10-Clubs}{8-Clubs}, busting Kuznia.

Mychal Sheridan
Mychal Sheridan

A player in the small blind put his last 10,225 in the pot on the end, with the board having come {10-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{10-Hearts}. Mychal Sheridan was considering his choices from early position when we got to the table, and he sighed and said he was calling.

"It's yours," the small blind said with disappointment, showing {q-Spades}{q-Diamonds}.

Sheridan showed {a-Spades}{k-Hearts} for a king-high flush.

Welcome to Mid-States Poker Tour Running Aces Harness Park

Will Mark Sandness be back to defend his title?
Will Mark Sandness be back to defend his title?

Coming off of one of the biggest events in tour history two weeks ago, the Mid-States Poker Tour returns this week to Running Aces Harness Park, the site of the tour's first stop this year, in February. Then, Mark Sandness topped a field of 354 runners to snag a first-place prize of $90,913 when he defeated tour pro Blake Bohn heads up.

Though we are unlikely to see a field that match's the whopping 487 who showed up at Potawatomi Hotel & Casino two weeks, the hype and momentum built by that impressive event may have some spillover here and result in more entries than expected.

Cards are scheduled to fly at 4 p.m. local time here in Columbus, Minn., and the structure in use will be the Allen Kessler-approved variety adopted by the tour earlier this year. Players will start with 20,000 in chips, and blinds will be 50/100 at the beginning, with levels lasting 40 minutes and breaks given every three levels. Each player is allowed one reentry should he or she bust out during the course of Day 1a play, so keep that in mind when browsing the reports.
