Day 1b Started

Welcome to Day 1b of Mid-States Poker Tour Canterbury Park

MSPT Canterbury Park
MSPT Canterbury Park

With one flight in the books at Mid-States Poker Tour Canterbury Park, it's time for Day 1b. The first flight drew a hefty 189 entrants, and it wouldn't be a surprise if this one topped 200 runners.

We won't be seeing a few notable players, such as Matt Kirby, Thao Thiem, James Maxey, David Gutfreund, Todd Breyfogle, Judd Greenagel, and Gennady Shimelfarb, as they all bagged on Day 1a up and get the day off today.

The plan for Day 1b is to play out 14 levels, with cards in the air at 4 p.m. as the last satellite winds down and the final few qualifiers trickle to the registration desk. The Allen Kessler-approved structure will be in place with 40-minute levels, 20,000 starting stacks, and breaks every three levels. Everyone will be allowed one reentry in case of an elimination before the end of Level 9, when registration closes.

Quads for Criego

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Bill Criego bet 2,650 on the end after the board came {7-Clubs}{a-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}. His opponent called, tossing in {5-Clubs}{3-Clubs}.

"Flush," the dealer said, turning to Criego as he threw in {9-Spades}{9-Hearts}. "Quads."

Quads indeed, and a nice start for Criego.

Abboud Flats a Boat

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Loki Abboud bet 2,500 from the cutoff on a {q-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{k-Spades}{k-Diamonds} board, and his opponent in early position check-raised to 5,100. Abboud called, and a {2-Hearts} completed the board. The first player slowed down with a check, and Abboud bet 5,000. His opponent called after some thought, and Abboud showed {9-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} for a full house.

Balsiger Sitting In

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

Almost hidden in the corner of the room, Jake Balsiger occupies Seat 8 at Table 2. Balsiger gained poker fame with a deep run in the 2012 Main Event, where he ultimately finished third behind Greg Merson and Jesse Sylvia. Balsiger scored some scattered four and five-figure cashes since that $3.8 million score before choosing another one of the world's biggest tournaments to make his presence felt again: the 2014 Aussie Millions. There, he once again finished third, this time for about $568,000.

He'll try to add a Mid-States Poker Tour win to his successes, here at Canterbury.
