Newman Leads Day 1a; Pupillo Bags a Heap

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Brian Newman
Brian Newman

They say chips flow to the left in poker. They certainly did for Brian Newman on Day 1a of Mid-States Poker Tour FireKeepers Casino, as he got full value out of a positional advantage against a fellow big stack en route to bagging 438,500 for a wide lead over second-place finisher and former MSPT Player of the Year Patrick Steele, who ended with 312,500.

The event drew a very solid turnout of 156 runners, far ahead of the 122 the tour drew for Day 1a last time it was in Battle Creek, Mich. Of those, 30 survived the 14 levels of play, including MSPT team pro Nick Pupillo (227,500), David Gutfreund (119,000), Adam Friedman (118,500), defending champ Ryan Dykhouse (97,500), and Nick Jivkov (71,000), who already has one MSPT title on his résumé.

Newman spent the critical later levels of the night seated to the left of one-time chip leader Brian Stevens. That positional advantage fueled his late surge as he clashed repeatedly with Stevens. First, Stevens min-raised in the small blind to 4,000 and saw Newman make it 9,000. Stevens called, seeing a {j-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} flop. He check-called 10,000, and both players checked the {7-Spades} turn. Stevens fired 25,000 on the {2-Spades} river, but the bluff proved to be ill-timed as Newman snapped it off with the {q-Spades}{q-Clubs} and was shown the {k-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}.

Then, on a completed board of {5-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{3-Spades}{a-Spades}{6-Hearts} during that same level, Stevens bet 30,000, only to have Newman shove all in for about 110,000 more. Stevens folded, and Newman showed the {k-Clubs}{j-Diamonds} for the monster bluff. He eventually finished Stevens off in the final level of the night with {a-}{k-} on a {3-}{q-}{a-} flop against {q-}{10-}.

Pupillo, the subject of a recent PokerNewsfeature piece, has been on a tear recently, coming off of a victory in HPT Ameristar East Chicago for more than $120,000. He won a huge late flip in a five-bet pot with the {j-Clubs}{j-Spades} when he held against the {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts} unimproved.

Some players who did not advance included Steve Anderson, Jose Serratos, Bruce "Hammer" Swart, Howard Hankin, Dash Dudley, Tom Midena, and Allen "Chainsaw" Kessler.

There's a quick turnaround to Day 1b, which begins at noon on Friday, so come back to PokerNews for more live updates.

Pupillo Wins Huge Late Flip

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Nick Pupillo
Nick Pupillo

A player on the button opened for a raise and saw Nick Pupillo three-bet to 14,000 in the small blind. The player on the button came back with 36,400. Pupillo counted down his stack and then announced he was all in. That put his opponent at risk for around 85,000.

"Can't fold now," the player muttered, though he still thought about 30 seconds before calling.

Pupillo: {j-Clubs}{j-Spades}
Opponent: {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}

The board came down in Pupillo's favor: {6-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{2-Spades}.

"F***," the player with ace-queen said. "Good hand, boss."

Newman Wins Blind Battle of Brians

Level 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Brian Stevens
Brian Stevens

Two of the bigger stacks just clashed at Table 11, with Brian Stevens raising to 4,000 in the small blind and Brian Newman three-betting to 9,000 in the big. Stevens called, and {j-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} flopped. Stevens checked and called 10,000. Both quickly checked the {7-Spades}, and Stevens bet 25,000 on the {2-Spades} river. Newman snap-called, and Stevens showed him {k-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} for a missed double-gutshot.

Newman took it with {q-Spades}{q-Clubs}.

"If You Have an Ace, You Always Have a Chance"

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Allen Kessler
Allen Kessler

Allen Kessler opened to 2,100 in middle position, and a player on the button jammed for 8,750. When action folded back to him, Kessler declared that he loved the spot he was in but knew he was going to lose.

Kessler: {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs}
Button: {a-Spades}{8-Spades}

Kessler pointed knowingly as the flop came {8-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}, and the {a-Hearts} even came on the turn to leave "Chainsaw" dead.

Kessler exchanged barbs with his opponent after the hand.

"You want to get your money in with 28 percent equity, go ahead," he said.

"If you have an ace, you always have a chance," the player replied.

Not Even a Sweat for Choe

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
MSPT FireKeepers
MSPT FireKeepers

There was already 30,000 in the pot on a {5-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} board, and Ted Choe had a wager of 16,000 in front of him from middle position. His opponent in the blinds moved all in for about 30,000, and Choe called.

Choe: {a-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}
Opponent: {a-Hearts}{a-Spades}

Choe had started out the hand crushed beyond belief, but he got stacks in without having to sweat so much as a one-outer. The dealer counted down stacks, and Choe had his opponent barely covered.

Pupillo Doubles Through Jivkov

Level 7 : 250/500, 50 ante
Nick Pupillo
Nick Pupillo

Before the break, Nick Pupillo got his last 18,900 in with {10-Spades}{9-Spades} on a {9-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{k-Spades} flop against former Mid-States Poker Tour champ Nick Jivkov. The latter held {k-Clubs}{10-Clubs} for top pair, but Pupillo got there on the {3-Spades} river after a {6-Clubs} turn.

Pupillo is coming in hot after taking down HPT in Chicago for $120,537.

Anderson Bricks First Bullet

Level 4 : 100/200, 25 ante
Steve Anderson, pictured at MSPT Meskwaki

Steve Anderson swung and missed on his first try here at Mid-States Poker Tour FireKeepers. Already well below the starting stack, Anderson sent 4,000 to an opponent on a {7-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{7-Diamonds} board with {j-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}, outkicked once again by {a-Hearts}{j-Spades}. Left with just 1,075, Anderson busted moments later.

Level 3 : 100/200, 0 ante
Michael Rollins
Michael Rollins

On a board of {a-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{4-Spades}{7-Hearts}, small blind Michael Rollins bet 3,500. His opponent in the hijack made it 7,000 to go, and Rollins wasted no time shoving all in for 9,725. The hijack called and flipped a set of fours, but Rollins had {10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} to leave him drawing to one out. The {2-Clubs} wasn't it on the river

Welcome to Day 1a of Mid-States Poker Tour FireKeepers Casino

FireKeepers Casino
FireKeepers Casino

One of the most successful stops in recent memory on the Mid-States Poker Tour was at FireKeepers Casino last October, where the tour drew 517 runners to the stop in Battle Creek, Mich. That tournament was won by Ryan Dykhouse for $124,500, one of the biggest prizes ever given out on the tour.

The MSPT is back for two more stops at the property this season, and today kicks off the first of those with Day 1a, the first of three starting days.

The plan for the day is to plan 14 levels, each one lasting 40 minutes under the Allen Kessler-approved structure. Blinds begin at 50/100 with each player holding 20,000 in chips to start off. Each player is allowed one reentry per starting flight in case of elimination, usable through the end of Level 9.

A big field is expected once again, so we'll see what transpires here on Day 1a.
