MSPT Team Pro Nick Pupillo the Latest Victim of William Givens

Level 20 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Nick Pupillo
Nick Pupillo

We picked up the action on the turn with a board reading {6-Clubs}{2-Spades}{10-Hearts}{3-Hearts} when MSPT Team Pro Nick Pupillo bet and William Givens raised. Pupillo thought for a bit before moving all in for what looked to be over 200,000, and Givens snap-called.

Givens: {3-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}
Pupillo: {k-}{k-}

Givens got lucky on the turn to pull ahead of Pupillo's kings, and he held when the {6-Diamonds} peeled off on the river.

Givens is now the clear chip leader, while Pupillo, who currently sits third on the MSPT Season 6 Player of the Year Leaderboard, won't be adding any points here at Golden Gates Casino.

The Defending Champion Falls

Level 20 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Kane Lai
Kane Lai

Back in March, Kane Lai won this very event, and just last week he captured a Heartland Poker Tour title. Lai was looking to defend his title, and he had a shot at it coming into Day 2 on a big stack. Unfortunately for him, the day did not treat him kind.

In what would be his final hand of the tournament, Michael Ermie opened for 23,000 from early position and Lai opted to shove all in for 159,000 from the button. The blinds both folded and Ermie announced a call.

Ermie: {8-Hearts}{8-Spades}
Lai: {9-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}

Lai picked a bad spot to make a move, and it got even worse when the {4-Clubs}{q-Hearts}{8-Clubs} flop delivered Ermie a set. The {7-Diamonds} turn officially left Lai drawing dead, and he made his way to the exit after the {K-Hearts} was run out on the river. With that, the MSPT Golden Gates Casino is assured a new champion.

Fielder Dispatched By the Made Millionaire

Level 17 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Adrian Buckley
Adrian Buckley

Despite an early double, Jeff Fielder, who began the day as the short stack, will not be making it to Level 18.

In one of the last hands of the level, Fielder shoved all in for 47,000 from the hijack. Adrian Buckley, who won the 2015 WSOP Millionaire Maker event this past summer, then moved all in from the small blind and drove Ben Keeline from the big.

Buckley: {a-Spades}{q-Hearts}
Fielder: {j-Clubs}{10-Spades}

Fielder was behind, but drawing to two live cards. The {2-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{a-Clubs} flop was disaster for Fielder as Buckley made a pair. The {5-Diamonds} turn left Fielder drawing dead, and he wished the table good luck as the dealer put out the meaningless {4-Spades} on the river.

Meanwhile, Tim Heminger has also been eliminated from the tournament.

Who Will Walk Away with the $123,180 First-Place Prize?

MSPT Golden Gates
MSPT Golden Gates

Welcome back to the Mid-States Poker Tour Golden Gates Casino!

Over the last three days, 510 entrants – a new record for the stop — packed the Golden Gates Poker Parlour to create a $494,700 prize pool, which absolutely obliterated the $200,000 guarantee.

Of those, just 87 combined players survived from the three starting flights, and today Bobby Sanoubane of Aurora, Colorado will begin the day as chip leader with 466,000, which is ahead of both Day 1b chip leader Derek McMaster (450,000) and Day 1a's Ross Reichert (357,500).

Earlier in week, Golden Gates Casino hosted a $360 buy-in $100,000 guaranteed MSPT Regional event, which attracted 770 entrants. Sanoubane, who fired four bullets in the Main Event, took down that tournament for $33,000 after a six-way chop. If there's such a thing as home field advantage in poker, Sanoubane has it.

Of course he'll have his work cut out as he faces some stiff competition on Day 2 including defending champ Kane Lai (304,000), MSPT Team Pros Matt Alexander (270,500) and Nick Pupillo (100,000), Colorado poker pro Bryan Devonshire (178,000), WSOP Millionaire Maker champ Adrian Buckley (157,500), two-time WSOP bracelet winner David Warga (60,000), and the short stack coming into play, Jeff Fielder (32,000).

It'll also be interesting to keep an eye on the MSPT Season 6 Player of the Year race today. Mark Hodge, who was eliminated on Day 1c, currently leads with 3,540 points, a solid 540 ahead of second place Blake Bohn. However, the aforementioned Pupillo sits in third with 2,950 points. With neither Hodge nor Bohn in the mix today, Pupillo finds himself with a great opportunity to add some coveted POY points.

Day 2 will kick off at 12:00 p.m. local time, which is about an hour from now. Who will walk away with the top prize? Be sure to join us then as we bring you all the action from the MSPT Golden Gates Casino!
