Wilson Bags Lead, Seeks Second Straight MSPT Final Table

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
James Wilson gambled late to finish as the leader.
James Wilson gambled late to finish as the leader.

James Wilson claimed the chip lead and a $2,000 bonus on the very last hand of Day 1a at Mid-States Poker Tour bestbet Jacksonville. He topped 31 survivors of 14 levels of play out of 185 total runners, a field nearly big enough to hit the $200,000 guarantee before Day 1b even dawns. Wilson scored $61,473 for second place at the last MSPT of 2014 at Canterbury Park.

Others joining Wilson for Sunday's Day 2 include Austin McCullers (242,000), Toby Boas (239,500), Timothy Forsberg (234,000), Men “Not the Master” Nguyen (221,500), former MSPT Player of the Year Patrick Steele (200,500), Judd Greenagel (145,000), Mark Hodge (109,500), Jason Zarlenga (89,000), and Steve Anderson (42,000). Hodge also made the final table at Canterbury, where he finished seventh.

Wilson's decision to gamble on the final hand of the night paid off, separating him from a tight bunch at the top of the counts. He opened to 7,000 in early position with blinds of (1,200/2,400/300) and saw an opponent make it 35,000 on the button. Wilson called, and the two got it in on an {8-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} flop. Wilson had flopped a set with {4-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} and he easily held against {a-}{k-}.

Boas also owes his massive stack to a huge late pot. After Zarlenga opened early to 5,000, Boas made it 15,000. Chan Nguyen cold-called in the small blind, and Zarlenga came along to see {5-Spades}{7-Clubs}{j-Spades} flop. Zarlenga opted to lead into the raiser for 22,000. Boas was undeterred, shoving all in for 51,600. Nguyen cold-called once again, and Zarlenga called as well. The two checked down the {6-Diamonds} and {2-Diamonds}, and Boas slapped down the {j-Clubs}{j-Hearts} for top set. He had dodged two flush draws, Nguyen's {a-Spades}{6-Spades} and Zarlenga's {q-Spades}{10-Spades}.

All of the players in that pot ultimately bagged up, but a number of competitors weren't so fortunate. Tour pro Matt Kirby, as well as regulars Adam Lamphere, “East Coast” Mike Ross, and Jim Boone also fell during the course of play. The most decorated player in the field, 2004 Main Event champion Greg Raymer, also found himself busto after failing to get much going in the early levels. The good-natured Raymer at least kept his tables entertained with friendly banter for the duration of his run.

Raymer and the rest of the vanquished still have one more day to qualify for this burgeoning prize pool, as Saturday's Day 1b is expected to attract another sizable field. Cards are scheduled to fly at 2 p.m., and PokerNews will once again provide live updates.

Boas Triples Up in Monster Pot

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Toby Boas dodged a pair of flush draws.
Toby Boas dodged a pair of flush draws.

Jason Zarlenga opened for 5,000 in early position, and Toby Boas made it 15,000 on his left. Action folded to Chan Nguyen, who called in the small blind. Zarlenga called as well, and the flop brought {5-Spades}{7-Clubs}{j-Spades}. Zarlenga bet 22,000 after Nguyen checked, and Boas shoved all in for 51,600. Nguyen announced a call, and Zarlenga thought for a couple of minutes before calling as well. The two active players checked through the {6-Diamonds} and {2-Diamonds}.

Boas stood up and slapped down the {j-Clubs}{j-Hearts}, knowing he'd tripled up with top set. Nguyen and Zarlenga both missed flush draws with {a-Spades}{6-Spades} and {q-Spades}{10-Spades}, respectively.

Kelley Finds a Backdoor Double

Level 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Men Nguyen nearly scored an unlikely KO.
Men Nguyen nearly scored an unlikely KO.

Dave Lee limped in early position, and Men Nguyen raised to about 6,000. Action folded to Chuck Kelley, who shipped all in for 37,200 in the big blind. Lee folded, and Nguyen snap-called.

Nguyen: {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades}
Kelley: {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}

"Ohhh, nice hand," Nguyen said.

But it was Nguyen with the better hand after the {3-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{q-Clubs} flop, a one-outer according to Lee, who said he folded {a-}{q-}. The {2-Diamonds} gave Kelley some hope with a flush draw, and the dealer peeled off the {5-Diamonds} to save his tournament life.

Zarlenga Jams the River

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Jason Zarlenga
Jason Zarlenga

Jason Zarlenga struck back against the opponent on his right. On a {9-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{2-Clubs} board in a blind battle, the player check-called 18,000. The {4-Diamonds} blanked the river, and Zarlenga waited a bit before asking if it was on him.

Informed it wasn't, he turned to his opponent, who said he was checking.

"Are you going all in?" he asked after a moment.

"Calm down," Zarlenga admonished. "All in," he said moments later.

The player tanked for awhile and muttered to himself as he thought things over.

"Sorry, I need a minute," he said.

Zarlenga sucked in a deep breath and told the player to take his time. After a few minutes, the player folded, showing a {q-}. Zarlenga mucked, claiming he had {k-Spades}{q-Spades}.

Steele Flops the Boat

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Patrick Steele
Patrick Steele

On a board of {7-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{10-Hearts}, a player got it all in for his last 15,000 or so from the cutoff, and Patrick Steele was putting him at risk from the big blind.

Steele: {k-Clubs}{7-Clubs}
Cutoff: {a-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}

Both players had flopped three sevens, but Steele had paired his king as well to make a full house. He faded the river ace as a {q-Diamonds} fell, and the former Mid-States Poker Tour Player of the Year is just under 90,000 now.

Raymer Doubles, Remains Short

Level 7 : 250/500, 75 ante
Greg Raymer
Greg Raymer

"Three thousand, nine hundred, and fifty," Greg Raymer calmly said. That left him with just one T25 chip, and he was called by a player in the hijack. The two checked down a {4-Hearts}{3-Spades}{3-Hearts}{9-Spades}{j-Clubs} run out, and Raymer showed {j-Hearts}{10-Hearts} to win the pot with top pair.

First Bounty Claimed; Dichiaro Among Leaders

Level 4 : 100/200, 25 ante
Jason Zarlenga doubled up with kings.
Jason Zarlenga doubled up with kings.

Jason Zarlenga busted out of his first table and promptly exercised his option to reenter. He's been seated at Mike Ross' table for a bit now, and he was able to double up in a recent pot after betting 5,000 on a {3-Spades}{4-Hearts}{2-Spades} flop from middle position and seeing the player on the button shove, putting the Michigan native at risk for 6,700 more.

"Haven't been at this table long enough," Zarlenga muttered to himself. "Did you flop a set?"

After about 30 seconds, he called it off and was pleased to see his {k-Spades}{k-Hearts} held a wide lead over {q-Hearts}{q-Clubs}. A {k-Clubs} turn locked it in for Zarlenga.

At another table, Joseph Dichiaro had his {a-}{a-} hold up against {q-}{q-} all in preflop, and he's sitting with nearly three times the starting stack.

Wilson Picks Off a Bluff

Level 3 : 75/150, 25 ante

We found James Wilson on the button facing a bet of 5,300 from the cutoff on a completed community of {2-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{a-Spades}{j-Hearts}. Wilson thought for a bit and tossed in a call, and the cutoff immediately mucked her hand. Wilson flipped over {a-Diamonds}{j-Clubs} for top two and scooped the pot.

Wilson, a Minnesota native, had some good success in the last months of 2014 on the Mid-States Poker Tour. First, he cashed for $2,547 at MSPT Meskwaki in November, and he followed that up with a deep run in the final event of the year, MSPT Canterbury. There, he finished runner-up to fellow Minnesotan Peixin Liu, scoring $61,473 in the process.
