Klein Surges to Day 1b Lead; Raymer Bags in Third

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Jeff Klein surged to a late lead.
Jeff Klein surged to a late lead.

After Day 1b of Mid-States Poker Tour bestbet Jacksonville, the Day 2 field is set and Jeff Klein will go in as the overall leader with 400,000. Notable as that is, a far bigger name in the poker world looms as a major threat to capture the crown on Sunday; 2004 Main Event champ Greg Raymer bagged 266,500, the third-biggest count of the night. Forty players advanced from Day 1b out of 236 total.

Raymer fired on Day 1a but found no success, busting relatively early and choosing to pack it in and regroup for Day 1b. That proved a wise decision, as Raymer stayed patient for most of the day before he finally started running hot after the dinner break, when we noted him with 174,000 during Level 11 (600/1,200/200). Shortly after that, Raymer added a considerable chunk to his stack in a battle with the active Thad McNulty.

Raymer called McNulty's middle-position open from the cutoff, and the two saw {3-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs} flop. McNulty continuation-bet 5,200 and Raymer called. McNulty then slowed down as a three-flush came with the {7-Clubs}, check-calling 10,000. He came out firing again on the {q-Spades} river with 16,000, to which Raymer responded with a small raise to 37,000. McNulty called, and Raymer showed him {9-Clubs}{8-Clubs} for a winning flush, while McNulty mucked {k-Hearts}{7-Hearts} face-up.

Klein also dragged a monster pot late. He bet 20,000 from the big blind during Level 13 (1,000/2,000/300) against a player in the small blind, who shoved all in for 49,900 more on the {a-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} flop. Klein made the call with {10-Hearts}{10-Spades}, and his unfortunate opponent had flopped aces up with {a-Clubs}{10-Clubs}.

"What a sick hand," the player said after he bricked the last two streets.

Klein had 220,000 at that point, so he must have won another massive pot or two during the last level to solidify the chip lead and a $2,000 bonus.

Joining Klein and Raymer for in making it through were Rod Rodrigue (301,000), Hal Lewis (238,000), Andrew Dykeman (220,000), Jim Boone (106,500), Glenn Strickland (105,500), and Ryan Dykhouse (67,000).

Strickland's advancement came with a $500 bounty, gained at the expense of Matt Kirby's tournament life. Others who joined Kirby on the rail during the course of play included "East Coast" Mike Ross, Joseph Dichiaro, Adam Lamphere, and Eddy Mroczkowski.

The survivors will link up with the 31 from Day 1a to make a 71-player Day 2 field that will begin play at 11 a.m. local time on Sunday. More live coverage will be right here on PokerNews, so come back and see who pockets more than $100,000.

Raymer Gets a Big Pot

Level 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Greg Raymer has a huge stack late on Day 1b.
Greg Raymer has a huge stack late on Day 1b.

Thad McNulty raised to 4,600 from middle position and was called by Greg Raymer in the cutoff. On the {3-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs} flop, McNulty bet 5,200, and Raymer continued. The former Main Event champ stared lasers at his opponent as the {7-Clubs} peeled off, and McNulty opted to check, calling a 10,000 bet from Raymer. The {q-Spades} river prompted McNulty to come alive again with 16,000, and Raymer made it 37,000. McNulty called.

"Flush," Raymer said confidently, turning over {9-Clubs}{8-Clubs}.

"Bad card," McNulty said, showing {k-Hearts}{7-Hearts} for two pair on the same card that filled Raymer's draw. "Really bad card."

Casino, Kirby Busted

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Diane Casino
Diane Casino

Diane Casino pushed all in for about 20,000 in middle position and was called by Hal Lewis in the cutoff.

Lewis: {a-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}
Casino: {10-Clubs}{10-Spades}

"Little cards," Casino shouted, but instead it was {6-Clubs}{a-Spades}{q-Clubs} that flopped. The {6-Diamonds} turn left her with two outs.

"Ten!" she added, but she didn't really believe it as she walked away from the table. Sure enough, the river was a {4-Spades}, no help.

Matt Kirby busted out at another table.

McNulty Pops a Wheelie

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Thad McNulty
Thad McNulty

Thad McNulty bet 3,500 on a {2-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} flop from the big blind and got raised to 10,000 by a middle-position opponent. McNulty shoved all in and was called instantly for about 30,000, showing {a-Diamonds}{5-Hearts} for a wheel.

"I'm dead," the other player declared, showing {4-Spades}{3-Spades} for top two. "Nice hand."

He wasn't quite dead as fours and threes would win him the pot, but the {j-Spades} and {5-Spades} were no such cards.

Mroczkowski Busts Ross

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Eddy Mroczkowski has heaps now.
Eddy Mroczkowski has heaps now.

Mike Ross put his last 10,000 or so in and was called by two players before another shoved all in. Eddy Mroczkowski, the first caller, moved in as well, folding out the fourth player. Mroczkowski turned over {q-}{q-}, while the last all-in player showed {k-}{k-}.

"I have an ace!" Ross announced with glee, happy to have solid equity with such action behind him. He showed {a-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}.

A {9-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{2-Spades} flop helped nobody, but the {10-Diamonds} turn made Ross a flush draw to go with his ace. It was a {q-Clubs} on the river though, giving Mroczkowski the unlikely win.

Set Over Set Over Set

Level 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
Glenn Strickland
Glenn Strickland

On a board of {2-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{7-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}, Glenn Strickland bet 3,000 after one player checked, and Juan Cortes called. The player who checked shoved all in for about 10,000, and both Strickland and Cortes called. On the {3-Spades} river, Strickland moved in as well for 24,425, and Cortes snap-called.

Strickland leaned in and slapped {4-Hearts}{4-Clubs} down for quads. The all-in player showed {7-Clubs}{7-Spades} for top boat, while Cortes had also filled on the turn with {2-Clubs}{2-Hearts}.

Cortes Over 70,000 with Quads

Level 4 : 100/200, 25 ante
Juan Cortes
Juan Cortes

A player in middle position had the betting lead after firing the flop and turn as the board came {4-Spades}{j-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}. A player in the small blind had called him down, as had Juan Cortes in the cutoff. On the river, action checked to Cortes, who bet about 6,500. The small blind jammed for what looked like 15,000, and the aggressor let his hand go.

Cortes snapped, as he'd turned quads with {4-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}. The small blind showed he'd been coolered with {2-Spades}{2-Hearts}, turning a boat that killed his slim equity.

Mashburn Binks the River

Level 3 : 75/150, 25 ante
Lane Mashburn
Lane Mashburn

We found Lane Mashburn reraising what appeared to be a three-bet to 2,700 from the player in the big blind preflop. He put most of his stack in, and the big blind announced all in, which Mashburn called for 16,400 total.

Mashburn: {q-Spades}{q-Hearts}
Big blind: {a-Spades}{k-Clubs}

Mashburn's lead became a big deficit after the {k-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}{10-Spades} gave his opponent three kings. The {5-Hearts} turn was a blank, but Mashburn found the {q-Diamonds} on the river to double up.

Players are now on break for 15 minutes.

Welcome to Day 1b of Mid-States Poker Tour bestbet Jacksonville

Will Greg Raymer fire again on Day 1b?
Will Greg Raymer fire again on Day 1b?

One day after James Wilson bagged up 320,500 to lead the 31 survivors of Day 1a, Day 1b is set to begin at Mid-States Poker Tour bestbet Jacksonville. The tour's first trip to the new market coaxed a sizable turnout of 185 runners, and another big field is expected today.

Austin McCullers (242,000), Toby Boas (239,500), Timothy Forsberg (234,000), Men “Not the Master” Nguyen (221,500), former MSPT Player of the Year Patrick Steele (200,500), Judd Greenagel (145,000), Mark Hodge (109,500), Jason Zarlenga (89,000), and Steve Anderson (42,000) also survived the day, so we'll not see them. Matt Kirby, Adam Lamphere, "East Coast" Mike Ross, and 2004 Main Event champ Greg Raymer were shown the door during the course of Day 1a play though, so perhaps they'll make return appearances on Day 1b.

Cards are scheduled to fly at 2 p.m. local time, and the tournament will run with some slight variations compared to most MSPT events, including the two hours earlier start. Reentries are unlimited until the beginning of Level 10, which comes after a short dinner break (another venue-specific wrinkle), and the structure is slightly different, though it closely resembles the Allen Kessler-approved one the tour adopted last year.
