Mostafa Runs Hot to Top Day 1a; Bohn and Harder Bag

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Mo Mostafa
Mo Mostafa

The Mid-States Poker Tour's first journey to Maryland Live! Casino drew 70 runners for Day 1a, and Mo Mostafa raced out ahead of the field and finished with 238,900 in chips to top the 14 survivors. MSPT Team Pro Blake Bohn (142,600) and well-known pro Christian Harder (104,500) also bagged stacks.

Perhaps Mostafa should have known it was going to be a good day early on. After all, it's not every day you win an early four-bet pot with nine-high, but that's what happened for Mostafa in Level 1 (50/100).

A player opened to 300, MSPT Team Pro Matt Alexander made it 750 on the button, and both blinds called (Mostafa was in the small blind). The opener made it 2,350, and everyone but Alexander came along to see the {k-Clubs}{k-Hearts}{2-Spades} flop. Mostafa check-called 3,000, the big blind folded, and two checks followed the {q-Spades} turn card. Another queen hit the river, and Mostafa checked. His opponent gave up and showed the {3-Diamonds}{3-Clubs} for a counterfeited pair, and Mostafa won with the {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} — also counterfeited pair, but now using a nine as a kicker to the board.

Mostafa parlayed that early stack into the chip lead, and his hot run continued as he flopped quad sixes on a {j-}{6-}{6-} flop. Getting action with quads isn't always easy, but when your opponent flops top boat, as John Qreitem did, that tends to make things easier.

Flopping monsters continued to be the order of the day for Mostafa, as he three-bet from the big blind to 15,000 after the player in the cutoff seat opened during Level 8 (300/600/75). The opener got his stack in with {10-}{10-} and flopped a set, but Mostafa flopped top set of aces and eliminated yet another opponent. This hand put Mostafa at a monstrous 300 big blinds, a rarity six hours into a tournament.

Other players making the cut on Day 1a included Andrew Hippler (167,000), Gabriel Ohana (145,300), Frank Bonacci (119,800), Jason Eisele (88,700), Sorin Marinca (67,500), and Eugene Yun (66,700).

A number of players busted one or more bullets and will need to take shots on Day 1b or Day 1c if they want to compete for the championship on Sunday. MSPT Player of the Year points leader Mark Hodge will be one of those, and Adam Friedman, the aforementioned Alexander, and WSOP Circuit ring winner Jeromy Bittan also fell during the course of Day 1a play.

Day 1b commences on Friday at 11:15 a.m. local time, and PokerNews will be back for more live reporting.

Bohn and Hippler Double

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Blake Bohn
Blake Bohn

We found the dealer counting out a double for Andrew Hippler on an {8-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} board for 72,200. The chips came courtesy of Minho Choe and appeared to be the result of a preflop all in, as there wasn't much in the middle and Hippler had {a-Diamonds}{a-Spades} in front of him. Choe's cards were already in the muck.

Shortly after that, Blake Bohn doubled up at the same table with a set of sixes against a player who jammed {a-}{j-} high on the flop.

Mostafa Bounces Another

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Mo Mostafa
Mo Mostafa

Mo Mostafa three-bet to 15,000 after a late-position player opened the pot, and he snap-called the player's shove.

Mostafa: {a-}{a-}
Opponent: {10-}{10-}

The flop brought a {10-Spades}, and it looked like the Mostafa train was finally slowing down, but it was followed by an {a-Spades}, and Mostafa busted another unfortunate foe.

"At Least I Went Out in Style"

Level 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
John Qreitem
John Qreitem

Mohamed Mostafa just busted John Qreitem on a {j-}{6-}{6-} flop, ending the roller coaster run of Qreitem, who was down to about 2,500 early on and then had around 50,000 recently. Qreitem had flopped jacks full, but amazingly, they were no good as Mostafa flopped quad sixes.

"At least I went out in style," Qreitem said as he exited the table.

Alexander Out; Harder Has Heaps

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante
Matt Alexander
Matt Alexander

Matt Alexander recently reentered and was sat at Christian Harder's table, but his run there didn't last long as he busted out fairly quickly.

Meanwhile, Harder has continued to chip up and recently won a large pot when he three-bet to 2,700 preflop against a cutoff open and a button call. It went three-handed to a {2-Spades}{6-Clubs}{10-Spades} flop, and Harder bet 4,000. The cutoff called, and both players checked the {a-Diamonds} turn. Harder fired 9,500 on the {j-Clubs} river, and his opponent called with {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}. Harder had gotten lucky on the river, hitting a set with {j-Spades}{j-Diamonds}.

Hodge Semi-Bluffs Off

Level 3 : 100/200, 0 ante
Mark Hodge, pictured at MSPT Running Aces.

Mark Hodge bet 1,700 when Matthew Herzberg checked to him on a {2-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{3-Clubs} flop. Herzberg made it 6,700 to go, and Hodge thought briefly before shoving all in.

"You probably just have the ace of clubs," said Herzberg, who would have to call off for about 16,500 total to stay in the hand.

After a couple of minutes, he pushed forward all of his chips and flipped {a-Spades}{k-Clubs}. He was ahead, as Hodge had jammed with {a-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}, and the {2-Diamonds} turn and {7-Diamonds} river left both players with nada on the board, meaning ace-king high was best.

"Wow," a player at the table said. "Nice call."

Hodge echoed the sentiment as he pushed nearly all of his stack to Herzberg.

Players are on break for 10 minutes.

Christian Harder has taken a seat at Table 31 in Seat 1. Harder has a decorated tournament resume with nearly $3.2 million in live earnings dating to 2007. He has numerous six-figure scores, including a near miss at a WPT tournament in 2011, when he finished second for $248,962 after falling heads up to Dan Santoro. Known as "charder30" online, Harder has another pile of cashes in online tournaments, worth more than $3.1 million.

We'll keep an eye on Harder here and see if he can add to his impressive results.

Welcome to Day 1a of Mid-States Poker Tour Maryland Live! Casino

Matt Alexander, one of the MSPT team pros.
Matt Alexander, one of the MSPT team pros.

The Mid-States Poker Tour comes into a new venue and a fresh market with an event starting today at Maryland Live! Casino, one of the premier poker destinations on the East Coast. The tour rolls in with considerable momentum, having drawn one of the largest fields in tour history at Potawatomi with 635 players. That event was won by Jason Mirza, who took down a first-place prize of $147,529.

Unlike some other MSPT events, this one begins on Thursday and features three starting flights rather than the usual two. Cards are scheduled to fly at 4:15 local time for Day 1a, with 14 levels on the docket. Things begin with blinds of 50/100 and 40-levels, and each player will begin with 20,000 in starting chips. Ten-minute breaks are given every three levels, and each player is allowed one reentry per starting flight.

The usual MSPT crowd might be mostly absent at an event so far from the tour's epicenter, but one thing we can be sure of is the presence of MSPT team pros Matt Alexander and Blake Bohn. Currently Player of the Year points leader Mark Hodge has also made the trip. We'll keep an eye on all of them as Day 1a unfolds.
