Wazwaz Overcomes Slide to Bag Day 1a Lead

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Rob Wazwaz
Rob Wazwaz

"These guys should be ashamed if they let me bag a stack," Rob Wazwaz declared as one of the later levels ticked down on Day 1a of the Mid-States Poker Tour Meskwaki Casino, which attracted 175 runners.

As it turned out, not only did they let Wazwaz bag a stack, they let him bag the biggest one of them all. Wazwaz finished the night with 244,000 chips to lead 36 survivors after 14 levels of play in Tama, Iowa. The Minnesota player is a regular on the tour, with his best result being a fourth-place finish at MSPT Ho-Chunk in 2013 for $19,133. He has more than $450,000 in career tournament cashes.

Wazwaz started out strong with an early double but was down to 32,000 during Level 9 (400/800/100) after sending a large portion of his stack to Bill Hanson. However, a key double happened for him early in the next level when he bet 9,000 on a {6-Hearts}{5-Spades}{6-Diamonds} flop after an opponent checked to him. The player check- jammed, putting Wazwaz at risk for 32,800 total, and Wazwaz snapped it off with {q-Hearts}{q-Spades}, which was ahead of his opponent's {5-Clubs}{4-Clubs}. The {7-Spades} gave Wazwaz a sweat, but a river {j-Clubs} was safe for him.

Others surviving the grind included Nicholas Aranda (207,000), Steve Vang (189,000), tour pro Matt Kirby (176,000), Kevin Suneson (171,000), Ben Keeline (114,500), Rodger Johnson (106,500), Joe Barnard (78,000), and John Reading (50,500).

Aranda already had a solid stack when he got in a confrontation with James Wilson preflop, the latter having opened to 6,500 from the hijack during Level 13 (1,000/2,000/300). Aranda made it 13,000 from his left, and Wilson thought awhile before shoving for approximately 41,000. Aranda called with the {a-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}, only to see Wilson show the {a-Spades}{k-Hearts}. Luck smiled upon Aranda though as a {2-Clubs}{a-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{q-Spades}{3-Spades} run out left him with top two and the win.

Plenty of notables took shots and missed on Day 1a, such as former champs Josh Reichard, Ben Wiora, Terry Ring, and Jonathan Olson. Other eliminations included Steve Belland, Todd "Sharkslayerr" Breyfogle, Dustin Dirksen, Mike Lang, Lance Harris, Mike Ross, Kou Vang, MSPT points leader Mark Hodge, and MSPT team pros Matt Alexander and Nick Pupillo.

All will have a chance at redemption on Day 1b, which commences at 4 p.m on Saturday. We'll be back with more live coverage here on PokerNews, so be sure to check back then.

Keeline Busts Ross

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Mike Ross
Mike Ross

Ben Keeline opened in early position and then called the shove of Mike Ross, who had only about 13,000 in the small blind.

Keeline: {a-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}
Ross: {j-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}

Ross had live cards and pulled ahead as a {4-Spades}{k-Hearts}{j-Clubs} flop hit. Keeline still had outs though, finding one on the turn in the {a-Diamonds}. The {3-Spades} bricked off on the river, and Ross headed for the exits to try again tomorrow.

Aranda Busts Wilson, Melander

Level 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
James Wilson
James Wilson

James Wilson opened to 6,500 in the hijack and saw Nicholas Aranda make it 13,000 in the cutoff. Wilson jammed for approximately 41,000 after thinking for a couple of minutes, and Aranda called.

Aranda: {a-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}
Wilson: {a-Spades}{k-Hearts}

A {2-Clubs}{a-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} flop was solid for Wilson, but a {q-Spades} turn left him in need as fifth street approached. The {3-Spades} ended his Day 1a.

Todd Melander told us Aranda busted him a bit ago as well with bottom two when Melander flopped top pair.

"I Would Have Left You Here With a Broken Rib"

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Rich Alsup
Rich Alsup

A player in the hijack bet 8,000 on a {10-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}{k-Clubs} board and got a fold from the cutoff. Rich Alsup called on the button, and a {5-Hearts} completed the board. The hijack fired 8,000 again, and Alsup thought it over and cut out a stack before pushing in 19,000 more. The hijack snap-called and showed {10-Spades}{10-Diamonds} for a boat, but Alsup had it beat with {k-Diamonds}{5-Clubs} for a better boat.

"You were thinking about just calling," Rob Wazwaz said with a laugh. "If you had just called, I would have left you here with a broken rib."

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Todd Breyfogle
Todd Breyfogle

Two Todds went to war at Table 26, but it was Todd Melander holding {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds} and crushing Todd Breyfogle's {j-Diamonds}{j-Spades}.

"Not gonna use my one time," Breyfogle said. "On to the cash game."

The board ran out {6-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}, and Melander collected Breyfogle's stack of about 20,000.

Vang Loses Short Stack; Pupillo Busted

Level 7 : 250/500, 50 ante
Kou Vang
Kou Vang

Kou Vang shoved his last 6,575 from the button over a small blind bet of about 3,000 on a {k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} flop. The small blind called with {a-Clubs}{10-Spades} and had the best hand for the moment against Vang's {j-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} for a monster draw. Two bricks fell ({3-Spades} and {6-Hearts}) though, and Vang hustled away from the table.

Nick Pupillo also busted out.

Tsui, Pupillo Quad Their Way Up

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante
Nick Pupillo
Nick Pupillo

Gary Tsui just got a player all in on a {9-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{q-Diamonds} flop for about 15,000 with Tsui holding {2-Spades}{2-Diamonds} and his opponent having {k-Spades}{k-Clubs} for an overpair. Tsui turned quads to end the minor sweat.

At another table, Nick Pupillo said he saw a flop five ways for 600 apiece holding {3-}{3-} and {3-}{8-}{10-} flopped. Pupillo called 3,000, then 6,000 more on the {3-} turn. On {j-} river, Pupillo's opponent check-called off his 4,875 stack with {q-}{q-}.

Quick First Bullet for Kirby

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante
Matt Kirby, pictured at MSPT bestbet Jacksonville
Matt Kirby, pictured at MSPT bestbet Jacksonville

Matt Kirby just got his last few thousand in preflop and was called by two opponents. A {5-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{6-Spades} flop led to another player getting it all in for about 3,000, and the player on the button put him at risk.

Kirby: {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}
Button: {9-}{9-}
Small blind: {k-}{10-}

The turn brought an {a-Clubs} for Kirby, but the small blind hit trips on the {10-Hearts} river to take the whole pot.

Kirby said he lost the majority of his stack when he flopped bottom two with {3-Spades}{2-Spades} and was counterfeited on the turn after getting it in against a higher pair. He immediately reentered after busting.
