Day 1a Started

Welcome to Day 1a of Mid-States Poker Tour Meskwaki Casino

Nick Jivkov took it down in November here.
Nick Jivkov took it down in November here.

The Mid-States Poker Tour looks to set another record as it returns to familiar venue Meskwaki Casino in Tama, Iowa today. The tour drew excellent numbers in three events here last year, culminating in pro Nick Jivkov defeating a state-record field (for a buy-in over $1,000) of 426 en route to a $104,974 pay day.

Cards are set to fly at 4 p.m. as the tour returns to its usual starting time after the unique Golden Gates event in Colorado. Allen "Chainsaw" Kessler's signature blind structure will be in use as players start the day with 20,000 chips at 50/100 blinds. The tournament will progress from there with a new level every 40 minutes. Each player is allowed one reentry per starting flight up to the end of the break after Level 9 (400/800/100).

We'll be bringing all of the live updates right here on PokerNews.

Phan's Opponent Misses

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

Ryan Phan bet 2,500 from the button after a cutoff opponent checked to him on a {q-Spades}{10-Hearts}{6-Spades}{4-Diamonds} board, and his opponent called. On the {3-Spades} river, both players checked, and Phan waited for his opponent to open but the player seemed reluctant. Finally, he showed {j-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} for a missed straight, and Phan turned up {a-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}.

Phan is coming off a successful deep run at nearby Horseshoe Council Bluffs in the Rungood series there, where he banked more than $12,000 for a fifth-place finish in the main event.

Quick First Bullet for Kirby

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

Matt Kirby just got his last few thousand in preflop and was called by two opponents. A {5-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{6-Spades} flop led to another player getting it all in for about 3,000, and the player on the button put him at risk.

Kirby: {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}
Button: {9-}{9-}
Small blind: {k-}{10-}

The turn brought an {a-Clubs} for Kirby, but the small blind hit trips on the {10-Hearts} river to take the whole pot.

Kirby said he lost the majority of his stack when he flopped bottom two with {3-Spades}{2-Spades} and was counterfeited on the turn after getting it in against a higher pair. He immediately reentered after busting.
