Hudson Laps Field on Day 1b as 37 Advance

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Mario Hudson
Mario Hudson

Day 1b of Mid-States Poker Tour Meskwaki Main Event drew 196 players, pushing the total runners to 371 after two days. Mario Hudson will have a wide lead over the remaining field with 380,500 when everyone comes back for Day 2 on Sunday.

Hudson, a Minnesota native, has more than $180,000 in career cashes and is what you might call an MSPT lifer, having attended tour events since as early as 2010. He cashed for $25,321 after a second-place finish in April of that year when the tour was still branded as the Minnesota State Poker Tour.

Counting Hudson, 37 players advanced from Day 1b, including Joe Matheson (282,000), Thao "Scratch" Thiem (246,000), Josh Reichard (155,000), two-time champ Dan Sun (113,000), Jason Seitz (100,500), Lance Harris (93,000), Ryan Hohenstein (72,000), Mike Ross (66,500), MSPT Ho-Chunk champ Ben Wiora (54,500), and current MSPT points leader Mark Hodge (44,500).

Hodge is seeking an incredible seventh straight MSPT cash, having made three final tables during his surge. His best result was a fourth-place finish at Running Aces for a little over $25,000. He busted Jim Boone late in the night with the {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds} against Boone's {a-Spades}{k-Hearts} to get up to about 75,000, but ran into a snag during the last level of the night, Level 14 (1,200/2,400/400).

At that point, Hodge three-bet to 20,000 over an Anselmo Villarreal open to 8,000. Villareal called after some deliberation and then checked a {j-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{4-Hearts} flop. Hodge bet 20,000 again and then folded when Villarreal tank-shoved for Hodge's last 18,000. Villarreal showed the {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}, and Hodge showed he had bricked the flop with the {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}. Hodge was able to double up in the waning minutes and keep his streak alive for at least another day.

With a big field and just a few tables worth of players bagging, plenty of notable names failed to advance. Todd "Sharkslayerr" Breyfogle, "Minnesota" Jon Hanner, Kou Vang, Allen "Chainsaw" Kessler, David Gonia, Mike Lang, Everett Carlton, Shawn Roberts, and MSPT team pros Matt Alexander and Nick Pupillo were among those falling during the course of play. Roberts and Pupillo had heaps of chips with a few levels left before busting out, with many of those chips likely finding their way to Hudson's stack as he ended the night with a huge lead over second-place Matheson and Day 1a leader Rob Wazwaz (244,000).

Play resumes on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. local time at Level 15 (1,500/3,000/500), and PokerNews will again be on hand to see who is crowned the latest MSPT champion.

Hodge Eliminates Boone

Level 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Mark Hodge
Mark Hodge

Mark Hodge put Jim Boone at risk preflop, with the latter starting the hand with around 35,000. Hodge had him barely covered and had the best of it with {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds} against Boone's {a-Spades}{k-Hearts}.

"Keep 'em little," Hodge urged, and the dealer obliged as a {j-}{10-} high flop was followed by all small cards.

The Mid-States Poker Tour Player of the Year leader has gained some momentum late on Day 1b as he seeks yet another cash.

According to Mike Ross, Jason Seitz made a "sick call" with ace-high against Kou Vang, who jammed with seven-high on a double-paired board. Vang is out, and Seitz has a nice stack over 100,000.

Harris Escapes from a Loser

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Lance Harris
Lance Harris

Lance Harris bet 8,200 from the button after a middle player checked to him on a board of {9-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{4-Hearts}. Harris' opponent put him all in for 18,000 more, which caused Harris some concern.

"I wish I knew you better," he said as he thought for a couple of minutes.

"I'm John," the player offered.

That got a chuckle from the table, and Harris asked if he could see his opponent's hand if he mucked.

"For $5," John replied. Harris sent him a $10 bill shortly after and mucked.

"I've only got $3," John said, handing Harris short change.

Boone Loses to Straight Flush

Level 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
Jim Boone, pictured at MSPT bestbet Jacksonville
Jim Boone, pictured at MSPT bestbet Jacksonville

We found three players all in on a board of {2-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{5-Hearts}, with Jim Boone covering both of his opponents and having turned the nut flush with {a-Hearts}{j-Hearts}. One player turned a straight with {4-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}, but "Captain" David Kimbrell had everyone drawing dead with {4-Hearts}{3-Hearts}, having binked a straight flush. The meaningless river was a {9-Clubs}, and Kimbrell knocked out the short-stacked player, while Boone had to ship him a little over 38,000.

Players are on break for 10 minutes.

Shabatura Takes Three-Way All In

Level 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
MSPT Meskwaki
MSPT Meskwaki

A player in middle position opened for a raise, and George Shabatura three-bet to about 3,000. The player in the cutoff made it 8,700, and the opener jammed, covering both opponents. Shabatura called for 19,000, and the cutoff put his stack of about 15,000 in.

Middle position: {q-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}
Shabatura: {k-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}
Cutoff: {a-Spades}{k-Hearts}

Three big hands, and the board ran out {9-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{9-Spades} to keep Shabatura's kings best.

Wilson Doubles Through Roberts

Level 3 : 100/200, 0 ante
James Wilson
James Wilson

Shawn Roberts opened to 400 and got one caller before James Wilson three-bet from the button to 1,400. The big blind cold-called, and Roberts and the first caller made it four to the {q-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} flop. Action checked to Wilson, who bet 2,400. The big blind folded, and Roberts raised to 9,000. The squeezed player folded, and Wilson called off for 7,975.

Wilson: {q-Spades}{5-Spades}
Roberts: {k-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}

Wilson's top two had Roberts crushed, and the {3-Spades} and {a-Clubs} changed nothing.
