Hodge Bags Huge Day 1a Lead

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Mark Hodge
Mark Hodge

Mid-States Poker Tour regular Mark Hodge won a huge pot as the night wound down at MSPT Running Aces to lead the 34 survivors of Day 1a. The Minnesota native is a fixture on the tour, having even made the trek to Jacksonville for the first event of the year, where he made the final table but finished 10th for $5,231. Hodge also navigated to the final table of MSPT Canterbury, the final event of 2014, where he took home $15,837 for seventh.

Hodge finds himself in prime position to record a third straight final table primarily because he doubled through Joe Barnard on one of the last hands of the night.

In a battle of the blinds, Hodge checked a {4-Hearts}{8-Spades}{4-Diamonds} flop and saw Barnard bet 9,000. Hodge raised to 20,000, and Barnard tossed in a call after some thought. On the {a-Clubs} turn, Hodge bet 15,000, and Barnard cut out enough chips for a raise before electing to just call. Hodge fired once more with 30,000 on the {k-Hearts} river, and Barnard shoved after thinking it over for awhile.

Hodge snap-called and tabled {a-Hearts}{4-Spades} for fours full. Barnard winged {7-}{4-} into the middle in disgust, and he had to send Hodge 152,600. Barnard did manage to bag 59,000 to advance to Day 2.

Others joining Hodge and Barnard for Sunday included James Maxey (228,500), James Gibson (204,000), John Reading (181,500), Darren Ficek (125,000), Jeff Fielder (94,500), Todd Melander (94,000), "DQ" Dan Hendrickson (92,000), "East Coast" Mike Ross (70,600), Terry Ring (67,500), Tony Lazar (42,000), and Jeremy Dresch (41,500).

Of course, with 161 runners in the field, plenty of notables failed to advance. Two-time champions Jason Zarlenga and Matt Kirby, Peixin Liu, Adam Dahlin, Everett Carlton, Mike Schneider, Nick Pupillo, Adam Friedman, and Kou Vang were among those missing the cut. They'll have to come back for Day 1b for a shot at the prize pool. That flight kicks off at 4 p.m. local time on Saturday here in Minnesota, and PokerNews will be back on hand to document the day's play.

Maxey Busts Fisher, Friedman

Level 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Adam Friedman
Adam Friedman

Adam Friedman opened for 4,000 in middle position, and Todd Fisher jammed for 18,200 on his left. James Maxey called in the blinds, and Friedman shoved the rest of his 50,000 or so in. Maxey called.

Maxey: {10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}
Friedman: {a-Clubs}{q-Hearts}
Fisher: {9-Spades}{8-Spades}

Maxey all but ended things by flopping a boat as {10-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} hit the board. The fourth nine didn't appear on the last two streets, and Maxey collected the double knockout.

Phan Coolers Ross

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
"East Coast" Mike Ross
"East Coast" Mike Ross

Mike Ross bet 5,000 from middle position on a {10-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{10-Hearts} flop and was called by the player on the button and Paula Phan in the blinds. On the {4-Spades} turn, Ross fired 12,000, and the player on the button quickly folded. Phan cut out a raise, and Ross announced all in and was snap-called.

Ross: {a-Spades}{10-Spades}
Phan: {10-Clubs}{9-Hearts}

Ross was disgusted with the cooler, and the river {4-Diamonds} mean Phan doubled up with the better boat.

"I knew you had a huge hand," Ross said. "Your boyfriend couldn't stop staring at me, rocking his leg with excitement..."

Barnard Busts Schneider

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Mike Schneider
Mike Schneider

Mike Schneider opened to 3,200 on the button and then shove all in for what looked like around 40,000 when Joe Barnard three-bet to 9,000 from the blinds. Barnard called immediately and flipped {k-}{k-}, dominating Schneider's {9-Clubs}{9-Spades}. Neither player improved on the community, leaving Barnard's kings best and eliminating the limit hold'em legend from Day 1a play.

Friedman Busts Dahlin

Level 7 : 250/500, 50 ante
Adam Friedman
Adam Friedman

Adam Friedman opened for 1,050 on the button, and Adam Dahlin shipped all in for 8,000 more from the small blind. Friedman thought it over for a bit.

"If you have a real hand, you're going to be really mad if I suck out," Friedman mused moments before calling.

Friedman: {k-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}
Dahlin: {q-Clubs}{9-Clubs}

"I knew it," Friedman said, pleased to have the edge.

Dahlin flopped a pair and Friedman a flush draw on {5-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}, and Friedman took command with a {k-Spades} on the turn. Dahlin got no help on the {j-Spades} river, and he headed for registration to reenter shortly after busting.

Short Day for Kirby

Level 6 : 200/400, 50 ante

Matt Kirby was all in for 20,200 out of the blinds on an {8-Spades}{7-Hearts}{a-Hearts} flop when we arrived at his table. Opponent Chris Jones was thinking it over in middle position with a wager of 7,000 in front of him and decided to call.

Kirby: {a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}
Jones: {7-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}

Kirby chuckled upon seeing his opponent's cards, and he headed for the exit after the {4-Clubs} turn left him drawing dead on his second bullet.

Heathcote Takes Three-Way All In Before Break

Level 3 : 100/200, 0 ante
Ken Heathcote
Ken Heathcote

A massive pot was brewing at Table 34 as the majority of the room filtered out for break. The small blind was all in for 6,725, and James Wilson had called, only to see the cutoff, Ken Heathcote, shove, putting Wilson at risk for 15,000 or so total.

"Do you have me beat?" Wilson asked. Heathcote nodded.

Nonetheless, Wilson called.

Wilson: {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}
Small blind: {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}
Heathcote: {k-Spades}{k-Clubs}

Heathcote flopped a commanding lead with a set as {5-Spades}{k-Hearts}{9-Clubs} hit the board, and the {9-Clubs} turn locked him in

"DQ" Disqualifies One

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante
"DQ" Dan Hendrickson
"DQ" Dan Hendrickson

"DQ" Dan Hendrickson check-raised to 8,000 from the hijack after a cutoff opponent bet 2,600 on a {5-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{5-Spades}{2-Spades} board. The cutoff called, and the river brought a {6-Hearts}. Hendrickson fired another 8,000, and his opponent shoved all in for just a bit more after a couple of minutes of thought. Hendrickson called, and the cutoff turned over {10-Spades}{8-Spades} for a flush. Hendrickson had a superior flush with {a-Spades}{j-Spades} and collected the early knockout.

Jeremy Dresch and Aaron johnson bought into the tournament.
