Just 8 Bag on Day 1a of MSPT Denver Poker Open

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Phil Kiphardt
Phil Kiphardt

Day 1a of Mid-States Poker Tour Denver Poker Open saw a field of 73 entries turn up to get the ball rolling for the $200K guaranteed event, and eight of those players found bags after about 11 hours of play.

The top chip count by far belongs to Phil Kiphardt, who turned his 20,000 into 378,000. Kiphardt showed his fearlessness early on as he picked off a massive all-in bluff with just a pair of sevens on an ace-high board. He then had a big stack for most of the day, but a massive double knockout late in the night cemented his position as the Day 1a boss.

In a raised pot, Kiphardt flopped an open-ended straight draw and a flush draw with nine-eight suited. He checked it and saw two players shove all in for more than 20 big blinds apiece. Kiphardt opted to gamble and was happy to see each player show down just one pair.

Even the aces held by one of the players turned to dust on the turn when Kiphardt locked it up with a straight to rocket above 300,000 at a time when most players were happy to break 100,000.

Sitting in second place is WSOP Circuit crusher Vinny Moscati with 255,000. Moscati, who has seven Circuit rings to his credit, also cracked aces to swing things his way, with his coming when ten-seven suited flopped a pair and a flush draw. He also turned the bullets dead, and he'd later win a flip with ace-high holding against a flush draw and two live cards to reduce the field to eight.

That meant bagging time since less than 12 percent of the field remained, with 33 minutes remaining on the clock at 2,000/4,000/4,000.

As Day 1a was just the first of three starting flights, all with unlimited reentry, plenty of opportunities remain for players to join the eight survivors. Scott Stewart, Matt Livingston, Krzysztof Stybaniewicz and Warren Sheaves were some of the players firing bricks and missing on Thursday, but PokerNews expects to them in the fields for the coming flights as the prize pool continues to grow.

Coverage of the Denver Poker Open resumes at noon local time on Friday with Day 1b.

Huge Double Knockout for Kiphardt

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
MSPT Golden Gates
MSPT Golden Gates

On a flop of {6-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{j-Spades}, Phil Kiphardt checked in the small blind and Dan Howell moved all in for about 49,000. Steve Wilkie called it off in the hijack for about 45,000 and Kiphardt didn't need long before calling.

Kiphardt: {9-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}
Wilkie: {a-Clubs}{a-Hearts}
Howell: {10-Spades}{8-Spades}

Kiphardt's massive draw was in great shape and he got there right away on the {7-Clubs} turn. The meaningless river was a {j-Clubs}.

Krzysztof Stybaniewicz
Krzysztof Stybaniewicz

Krzysztof Stybaniewicz got his remaining 21,400 in with {q-}{q-} and was up against the {a-}{10-} of Eddie Konarske. Unfortunately for Stybaniewicz, his hand wouldn't hold, continuing a disappointing run of cards to end his Day 1a unless he opts to buy in short.

Three players saw a {3-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{5-Clubs} flop and Scott Stewart shoved into his opponents from the small blind for his last 7,700 with {a-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} for a straight flush draw.

Unfortunately for him, Cooper Wanty had flopped quad fives and sent him packing when he couldn't hit a single out.

Dodson Runs Out Royal

Level 7 : 300/600, 600 ante
Ryan Dodson
Ryan Dodson

Ryan Dodson was up to almost 140,000 and he said it happened because he opened with {k-Spades}{10-Spades} in the cutoff and then bet 1,500 on a {j-Spades}{2-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} flop. His opponent on the button made it 4,100 and Dodson called. On the {q-Spades} turn, Dodson check-raised all in over a bet of 4,000 and his opponent called for his last 8,000 or so.

Dodson was behind with his draw against {k-Clubs}{q-Hearts} but he found an {a-Spades} river for a royal flush, the second in the updates today here in Black Hawk.

Peragallo Doubles

Level 3 : 100/200, 200 ante
Andrew Peragallo
Andrew Peragallo

A player in the small blind bet 1,500 on a {6-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{7-Clubs} flop and got called by a player in early position. IN the cutoff, Andrew Peragallo piled in 7,500. The player on the button was undeterred by the action and asked to see Peragallo's remaining chips. She called the bet, and those two went heads up to the {7-Spades}. Peragallo shoved for 8,200 and his opponent tank-called.

Andrew Peragallo: {6-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}
Opponent: {9-Spades}{9-Diamonds}

Peragallo was fading only two nines and two sevens, and the {a-Hearts} was a clean river for him.

Sheaves' First Bullet Toast

Level 3 : 100/200, 200 ante
Warren Sheaves, pictured in a previous event.
Warren Sheaves, pictured in a previous event.

Four players saw a flop of {3-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} and Phil Kiphardt bet 400 from the big blind. Everyone stuck around for the {q-Hearts} turn and Kiphardt continued for 1,000. One player folded, Warren Sheaves made it 2,200 in late position and big blind Joel Verbeck snap-called. Kiphardt called as well and they went to a {3-Hearts} river.

At this card, Verbeck led out for 4,000. Kiphardt folded fairly quickly, and Sheaves tossed in his last 1,100.

"I've got a flush," Verbeck announced, showing {8-Hearts}{7-Hearts}.

Sheaves mucked and headed for the door.

Welcome to Day 1a of MSPT Denver Poker Open

After more than a week of preliminary action, the Denver Poker Open heads towards its conclusion and its biggest event as the Mid-States Poker Tour $1,100 Main Event prepares to get underway at Golden Gates Casino in Black Hawk, Colorado.

A veteran presence in the market, the MSPT recently wrapped up its $360 regional event here as part of the same series, which saw Colorado native Aaron Frei top a four-way chop for $36,607. The most recent MSPT $1K here saw Michigan's Brian Hou best two of Colorado's more recognizable traveling pros, Ben Keeline and Krzysztof Stybaniewicz. Hou relegated them to third and second place, respectively, back in April.

The $1,100 Main Event, sporting a $200,000 guarantee, kicks off today with the first of three starting flights. Each will offer players 40-minute levels and 20,000 starting stacks, with blinds beginning at 100/100 and progressing through 2,000/4,000/4,000. Alternatively, the players may bag early if 12% of the field is reached, rounded down.

If busted, players may reenter as many times as they wish until the start of Level 13 (1,000/2,500/2,500).

Stick with PokerNews for updates throughout the day, with the first cards scheduled to come off the deck at noon local time here in the mountains.
