Jim Morrison Rides the Storm, Lights a Fire to Bag Chip Lead

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Jim Morrison
Jim Morrison

Thus far at Mid-States Poker Tour Denver Poker Open $1,110 Main Event, one thing is for sure: players at Golden Gate Casino aren't worried about trying to eke their way into Day 2. For the second straight day, a hard stop was in play as 12% of the field was reached, this one even earlier at 26 minutes remaining in Level 14 (1,500/3,000/3,000).

Jim Morrison was tops among the 15 players who bagged, as he finished with 413,000, just barely ahead of the 411,500 bagged by Caleb Meyer. Nick Boll reached 393,500 for third place, and all three rank above Day 1a leader Phil Kiphardt.

Morrison had an unremarkable stack after the final break, but he caught fire in the aftermath. He made two sets to win huge pots, and then he busted Khoa Nguyen in a large flip with ace-king over jacks.

Meyer put a nasty cooler on Edo Zucker to end the night, with a flopped ace-high flush prevailing over a king-high flush.

A robust turnout of 132 also enabled the tournament to inch past its guarantee, as that made for 205 entries total while the guarantee sits at $200,000. With one flight still remaining, loftier goals are doubtless on the minds of organizers.

Some MSPT regs who advanced alongside the big stacks were "Farmer" Phil Mader, Cooper Wanty and WSOP bracelet winner Ben Keeline.

Among the notables still seeking a bag are Aaron Frei, Derek McMaster, Jason Vanstrom and Todd Melander.

They'll have their chance on Saturday with Day 1c, the third and final flight. The biggest turnout yet is expected, so come back to PokerNews at noon local time to follow the action.

Dixon Triples Up

Level 13 : 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante
Rich Dixon
Rich Dixon

After getting a shove through from under the gun, Rich Dixon got his 23,000 in chips in again the next had. Adam Hudson had shoved in the cutoff for 34,500 and limper Don Marquis was considering it. He opted to call.

Marquis: {a-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}
Dixon: {q-Spades}{q-Diamonds}
Hudson: {k-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}

The {3-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{6-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{j-Spades} community improved nobody, so Dixon tripled up and Marquis raked in a small side pot.

Kuznia Ousted on River

Level 11 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
Brett Kuznia
Brett Kuznia

After an early open to 3,600, Brett Kuznia shoved for 13,900. Josh Kieval isolated with a shipment of his own in the small blind, folding out the blinds and opener.

Kuznia: {5-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}
Kieval: {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}

The {9-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{6-Spades}{q-Hearts} board looked good for a Kuznia double, but the {a-Spades} doomed him on the river.

Mader's First Bullet a Blank

Level 7 : 300/600, 600 ante
Phil Mader
Phil Mader

With {j-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{4-Spades}{7-Diamonds} on the board, Phil Mader had checked and his opponent in early position, Maxx Holland, set him in for about 12,000. Mader thought awhile and then splashed in some chips, but his {j-Hearts}{10-Hearts} was no good against {k-Spades}{9-Spades} for a turned flush.

"Did he call me with a pair of jacks?" Holland asked in disbelief after Mader left.

Mader headed right back in line and drew a seat at the same table, so he'll have a chance to get his chips back.

Meier Building Quickly

Level 2 : 100/100, 100 ante
Dylan Meier, pictured at the WSOP.
Dylan Meier, pictured at the WSOP.

Among the players seated here during Level 2 is Nebraska's own Dylan Meier. He's off to a good start, too, having more than doubled his starting stack.

He just got two streets of value that we saw on a board of {k-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}. Meier bet 1,300 on the turn and about 2,300 on the river from middle position, getting paid off by an opponent in the hijack. Meier showed {j-}{10-} for a straight and his opponent mucked what looked like {a-}{k-} face up.

Profiled here by PokerNews, Meier made a deep run in the 2019 WSOP Main Event, where he finished 252nd for just shy of $44,000.

Welcome to Day 1b of MSPT Denver Poker Open

Golden Gates
Golden Gates

Mid-States Poker Tour Denver Poker Open $1,110 Main Event continues today with Day 1b of the $200,000 guaranteed event, held at Golden Gates Casino in the Rocky Mountains.

Day 1a saw 73 entries turn up, meaning the event is only about one-third of the way to covering the number. Of those 73, eight made it through to Sunday's Day 2, topped by the 378,000 bagged by Phil Kiphardt. With only about 12 percent of the field advancing, that means most of the players looking to punch Day 2 tickets will have to return here on Day 1b or for tomorrow's Day 1c.

The plan for Day 1b is identical to Day 1a. That is, 40-minute levels will be played starting at 100/100 with 20,000 in starting stacks. Unlimited reentry is allowed until the beginning of Level 13 (1,000/2,500/2,500).

A hard stop was reached on Day 1a, so Day 1b play will also be halted at 33 minutes on the clock during the final scheduled level, Level 15 (2,000/4,000/4,000).

The cards come off the deck at noon local time and coverage will until approximately 11 p.m, so plenty of poker is in store with updates throughout the day here on PokerNews.
