Welcome to Day 1a of the 2019 MSPT Wisconsin State Poker Championship

Potawatomi Hotel & Casino
Potawatomi Hotel & Casino

The Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) sees its next stop in Season 10 visit the Badger State for the 2019 Wisconsin State Poker Championship $1,100 Main Event at Potawatomi Hotel & Casino in Milwaukee, WI.

The tournament features a $300,000 guaranteed prize pool with three starting flights in total. Cards are set to fly at 3 p.m. local time for Day 1a, and players will receive 15,000 in starting chips with the option for a $10 add-on for another 5,000, giving players the opportunity to start with 20,000 in chips.

Blinds begin at 100/100 with 40-minute levels all day and 10-minute breaks after every three levels. Late registration is open until the start of Level 13, and players are afforded one reentry per flight, with play going until the completion of Level 15 (2,000/4,000/4,000) unless 12 percent of the field remains before that mark is reached. The stopping point of Day 1a will then determine the stopping point of the two subsequent flights.

All who do not advance in today’s heat have the opportunity to fire again on Friday at 3 p.m. for Day 1b and/or Saturday at 1 p.m. for Day 1c. The field will then combine for Day 2 on Sunday at 11 a.m. to play down to a winner, where the final table will be live-streamed on a 15-minute delay.

Last year’s 2018 Wisconsin State Poker Championship saw 748 entries over three starting days, the same number for this year, and Brett Halen claimed victory to earn himself $144,812. The MSPT also came through Potawatomi this past April, where Daniel Bekavac topped a field of 625 entries to earn a first-place prize of $126,998.

Who will be among the first to punch their tickets to Day 2 in the 2019 edition? Keep it at PokerNews to find out.

"YY" Shows the Nuts

Level 2 : 100/100, 100 ante
Yao Yin
Yao Yin

Nick Pupillo opened the action with a raise to 400 from the cutoff. The player on the button called and Yao "YY" Yin came along as well, defending his big blind to take postflop action three ways.

The flop fell {9-Spades}{8-Hearts}{7-Spades} and Yin tapped the top of a stack of chips twice to indicate a check. Pupillo made a continuation-bet of 600, which the player on the button called. Yin found action back upon him and postured for a few moments before throwing in a check-raise to 5,000. Both Pupillo and the player on the button quickly folded.

Yin turned over {j-Diamonds}{10-Spades}, showing that he had flopped the nuts. The dealer sent him the pot and he added some commentary as he stacked his chips.

"I didn't want you guys to see another card for free!" said Yin, laughing as he finished adding to his stack and the next hand began.

Bekavac Back In Action

Level 4 : 200/300, 300 ante
Daniel Bekavac
Daniel Bekavac

The seat that Daniel Bekavac occupied was seen having been vacated shortly after the first break. However, he was just spotted back in on the action and called a raise by Gary Herstein to 800. Herstein was in early position and Bekavac was in middle position, and the two saw the small- and big blinds come along as well to take action four ways to the streets.

The flop came {j-Clubs}{j-Spades}{10-Spades} and both blinds checked. Herstein fired a continuation-bet of 1,500. Bekavac called and the two blinds folded, taking action heads up to the turn {3-Hearts}. Both players checked.

The river came {9-Spades} and Herstein checked. Bekavac made a bet of 1,500 and Herstein thought for a bit and then folded.

"Good fold," said Bekavac as the pot was sent his way. "Jacks full."

Weiss Doubles With Aces

Level 5 : 200/400, 400 ante
Walter Weiss
Walter Weiss

The board read {6-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} with around 4,800 in the middle and three-way action. Walter Weiss checked from the small blind, as did the player in the big blind to put action onto Gary Herstein, who bet 5,200.

Weiss check-raised all in for 19,400 and the big blind folded. Herstein thought for close to a minute and then tossed in chips to call.

Walter Weiss: {a-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}
Gary Herstein: {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}

Weiss' aces were ahead of Herstein's tens with two cards to come. The turn {6-Diamonds} and river {7-Hearts} completed the runout to score Weiss the double, bringing Herstein back to around 25,000 in chips with Weiss finding himself with over two starting stacks when all was said and done.

Zuccarello Dusts Sun

Level 6 : 300/500, 500 ante
Cero Zuccarello
Cero Zuccarello

Cero Zuccarello opened the action with a raise to 1,000 from middle position and had received calls from the hijack and the small blind before John Sun three-bet all in for his last 11,000 from the big blind. Zuccarello called and the two players behind him folded, leaving the two to turn up their hands in preparation for the runout.

John Sun: {a-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}
Cero Zuccarello: {10-Hearts}{10-Spades}

Sun needed to improve to stay alive and was unable to do so as the board ran out {3-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}, earning Zuccarello the pot as Sun made his way from the tournament area.

Manke Sends One To the Showers

Level 7 : 300/600, 600 ante
Bryan Manke
Bryan Manke

There was around 20,000 in the pot with heads-up action between Bryan Manke, who was in the big blind and an opponent in early position. The board read {9-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} and Manke announced he was all in, sliding out well over a pot-sized bet.

The early-position player had about 14,000 left behind him, meaning he was the one who was put to a decision for the rest of his chips. After close to a minute, he committed the chips into the pot.

All-In Player: {10-Spades}{10-Hearts}
Bryan Manke: {j-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}

"Gah! Good game," said the player, standing up as the river fell {k-Diamonds}. Manke's jacks remained best at showdown and the pot was sent his way, bringing him close to three starting stacks worth of chips around 30 minutes after the second break of the day.

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Andres Garcia
Andres Garcia

Ravi Raghavan opened to 2,300 from under the gun and action made its way over to Andres Garcia, who three-bet all in for around 17,000 from the hijack. Raghavan made the call once action was back on him and the two were off to the races.

Andres Garcia: {a-Spades}{q-Spades}
Ravi Raghavan: {7-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}

Garcia started out on the shorter end of the coin flip and was in need of some help. An ace on the flop gave him just that and a clean turn and river scored him the double.

Lauson Trending Upwards

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Travis Lauson
Travis Lauson

Travis Lauson defended his small blind to an open to 2,500 from the player on the button. Action went check-check on the flop {5-Hearts}{a-Spades}{q-Spades}.

The turn came {7-Clubs} and Lauson checked again. His opponent bet 3,500, which he called to bring the river {q-Hearts}. Lauson led out, firing 5,500. After a few moments, Lauson's opponent folded and he took down the pot.

Lauson had already eclipsed the six-figure mark in chips prior to the last break nearly two hours ago, and has seen that figure continue to climb over the last two-plus levels, making him one of the largest stacks in the room with the third break of the evening looming near.
