Dresch Bags Day 1b Chip Lead at 2020 MSPT Canterbury Park $1,100 Main Event

Level 15 : 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Jeremy Dresch
Jeremy Dresch

The second and final starting flight of the 2020 Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) Canterbury Park $1,100 Main Event saw a total of 262 entries logged Saturday, bringing the two-day total up to 485 entries and generating a total prize pool of $468,950.

Action was aplenty all day long as a roomful of hopefuls looked to add their name to the 26 already on the Day 2 roster from Friday’s Day 1a. Many players saw their stacks regularly fluctuate throughout the day, but Jeremy Dresch steadily found his way to the chip lead, bagging a total of 510,000.

Dresch chipped up to around three-and-a-half times the starting stack of 25,000 around the midway point in the day and was up to 140,000 by Level 11. He dropped down to 100,000 before the final break of the night but had chipped up to 225,000 with an hour remaining in the evening. He then began his major ascent, accumulating chips by winning a series of small pots until his stack eclipsed 500,000, making him the only player from Day 1b with over a half-million.

Dresch was followed in the counts by Jake Blumberg (420,000), Mark Abboud (379,000), Phil Mader (336,000), and Ted Sennes (332,000).

Other notable players to advance were Mikiyo Aoki (166,000), Todd Fisher (165,000), Joe Ebanks (129,000), Andy Tran (117,000), and Jesse Rockowitz (98,000).

The day was not as kind to many others. Former champions Rob Wazwaz, Kou Vang, and Mark Jaroslawki were only a few of those back in action after failing to advance on Day 1a, only to find themselves out of chips again before the end of the day. Others like Blake Whittington, Matt Alexander, Adam Dahlin, and Jonathan Kim also fell short on the one or two bullets they each fired.

In total, 40 players advanced to bring the two-day total up to 66 set to return Sunday at 11 a.m. local time for Day 2 to play down to a winner. Fifty-four of those 68 players will make it into the money and earn a first-level payout of $2,110. The eventual champion will take home $100,824.

Who will be the first MSPT Canterbury Park champion of the new decade? Come back to PokerNews Sunday to find out.

Mader Dusts a Shorty

Level 14 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Phil Mader
Phil Mader

Phil Mader saw action folded to him in the hijack and put in a raise. The cutoff three-bet all in for about 35,000 and action folded back to Mader, who made the call.

All-In Player: {q-Diamonds}{j-Spades}
Phil Mader: {k-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}

Mader's cowboys were out in front and stayed there as the board ran out {9-Spades}{5-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}{5-Clubs} to give him aces up and secure the knockout and the pot, bringing the tournament down to 47 players nearing the midway point in Level 14.

Tran and Rockowitz Both Score Eliminations

Level 13 : 2,000/3,000, 3,000 ante
Andy Tran and Jesse Rockowitz
Andy Tran and Jesse Rockowitz

Hand #1: Andy Tran was under the gun and raised to 8,000. Action folded around to Jeff Maas in the cutoff and he three-bet all in for around 30,000. Tran called.

Jeff Maas: {k-Diamonds}{j-Spades}
Andy Tran: {a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}

Maas picked up a pair of jacks on the flop {7-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{3-Clubs} to give him a chance at cracking Tran's aces but that was the closest he would get as the turn {8-Spades} and river {a-Spades} completed the runout to leave Maas' pair of jacks second best against Tran's set of aces, ending his night shortly after the closure of the registration period.

Hand #2: Two hands later, Jesse Rockowitz scored a knockout. According to Tran, action folded to the player on the button and he shoved all in with Rockowitz calling in the big blind.

All-In Player: {k-}{9-}
Jesse Rockowitz: {a-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}

Both players flopped a pair as the flop fell {j-}{9-}{8-}. The all-in player then turned two pair as he hit {k-} on the turn, but Rockowitz was the one who finished back on top as the river {j-} gave him trips and scored him the pot and the knockout.

Hall Now Over 150K

Level 11 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Adrienne Hall
Adrienne Hall

Adrienne Hall had already scored another double since taking 3,000 to 38,000 and just was involved in a hand where she defended her big blind to an under-the-gun raise to 5,000 that came with a call from the cutoff. The three went to a flop of {9-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{3-Spades} and Hall led out for 10,000. The original raiser shoved all in, the cutoff folded, and Hall called off her remaining 59,000.

Adrienne Hall: {10-Spades}{10-Clubs}
Under the Gun: {a-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}

Hall's overpair of tens was way ahead of her opponent's top pair, top kicker and she faded the five outer on the turn {j-Clubs} and river {6-Hearts} to get the double, continuing her run from crumbs up to over 150,000 nearing the end of Level 11.

Makhmadsafoi Gets a Knockout

Level 10 : 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante
Khasani Makhmadsafoi
Khasani Makhmadsafoi

Khasani Makhmadsafoi was involved in a heads-up pot with a little over 10,000 in the middle on a board reading {5-Diamonds}{q-Spades}{a-Spades}{6-Hearts} and he made a bet of 4,500 in early position. His opponent was on the button and raised all in for 25,500. Makhmadsafoi quickly called.

All-In Player: {a-Hearts}{10-Hearts}
Khasani Makhmadsafoi: {5-Spades}{5-Clubs}

The all-in player tapped the felt after seeing his top pair was drawing dead to Makhmadsafoi's set of fives and the dealer brought the river {q-Hearts} to finish the runout before collecting the pot and sending it Makhmadsafoi's way.

Fisher Sends Whittington To the Rail

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Todd Fisher
Todd Fisher

There appeared to be just shy of 20,000 in the pot with four-way action on a board of {4-Spades}{3-Spades}{3-Hearts}. Blake Whittington checked in early position and Todd Fisher checked behind him in middle position. Jodene Jensen bet 3,200 in the hijack and was called by Jeff Maas, who was on the button to put action back onto Whittington, who check-raised all in. Fisher then reraised all in over the top, getting two quick folds from Jensen and Maas for hands to be tabled.

Blake Whittington: {k-Spades}{q-Spades}
Todd Fisher: {9-Spades}{9-Clubs}

Whittington had a chance to more than double with two overcards and a flush draw, but Fisher's pocket nines held as the turn {9-Diamonds} and river {5-Clubs} left the situation unchanged and sent Whittington to the rail en route to Fisher amassing a six-figure stack.

Santamaria Spikes a Dub

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Norberto Santamaria
Norberto Santamaria

Jonathan Kim pumped it up to 3,500 in early position and was called by Norberto Santamaria in the cutoff. The big blind three-bet to 13,000 and Kim quickly called. Santamaria then four-bet all in and the big blind five-bet all in over the top, effectively putting Kim to a decision for the rest of his chips.

"It's about a hundred," said the big blind as Kim was in the tank.

"I know that!" said Kim with a chuckle. Moments later, he sent his cards to the muck and sent the remaining two players off to the races.

Norberto Santamaria: {a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}
Big Blind: {j-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}

Santamaria was behind and stayed there on the flop {7-Hearts}{q-Spades}{6-Spades} but found the help he needed on the turn {a-Hearts}. The river {10-Clubs} was safe and his stack was counted out to be 34,300, which the big blind matched and the dealer sent his way.

Sodoma Gets an Elimination

Level 6 : 300/600, 600 ante
Joseph Sodoma
Joseph Sodoma

Joseph Sodoma was under the gun and opened to 1,400. He received a call from Sammy Aweida in middle position before a player in the hijack went all in for his last 4,300. There was a dead button in the hand and action folded back to Sodoma, who announced a reraise. Aweida quickly sent his hand to the muck.

All-In Player: {a-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}
Joseph Sodoma: {k-Diamonds}{q-Spades}

The all-in player needed to fade two live cards and stayed out in front as the flop came {6-Spades}{2-Spades}{3-Clubs}. However, the turn {7-Spades} gave Sodoma nine more outs at a flush. The river {3-Spades} then hit the felt, spelling doom for the all-in player as Sodoma completed his backdoor flush to score the elimination and earn the pot.

Level 6 : 300/600, 600 ante
Saad Ghanem
Saad Ghanem

Saad Ghanem was just seen with full stacks of almost every denomination of tournament chip, boasting a stack of 177,000.

He was kind enough to share how he got there: "Oh, not much (by way of exciting hands)," said Ghanem. "Just quad nines, queens versus tens, aces versus jacks, (and a) straight versus two pair."

Ghanem looks to be the chip leader with the tournament having climbed up to 225 entries, surpassing yesterday's mark of 223 in Level 6.

Le Left With Crumbs as Prasanna Doubles

Level 4 : 200/400, 400 ante
Nghia Le
Nghia Le

There was over 4,000 in the middle with three-way action between Nathan Heller in the small blind, Nghia Le in the big blind, and Swami Prasanna in early position. Action was in the process of checking through a flop of {j-Spades}{6-Spades}{q-Spades} to bring a turn of {7-Hearts} onto the board.

Heller checked again and Le bet 2,700. Prasanna threw out two T5,000 chips to raise it up, prompting a fold from Heller before Le quickly three-bet all in for Prasanna's last few remaining chips. Prasanna called and hands were tabled.

Swami Prasanna: {a-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}
Nghia Le: {q-Hearts}{6-Clubs}

Le's flopped two pair was out in front of Prasanna's top pair, top kicker and he was poised for the double. However, the river {7-Diamonds} counterfeited Le's queens and sixes and left Prasanna's ace kicker to play with both players' queens and sevens to score him the double, leaving Le with just 6,500 remaining in the process.
