Burleson Leads Final Flight of 2020 MSPT Golden Gates $360 Regional

Level 15 : 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Rick Burleson

The field has been set for Day 2 of the 2020 Mid-States Poker Tour Golden Gates $360 Regional Event after Day 1d brought a record-setting 400 entries to the Golden Gates Casino and Poker Parlour to bring the overall total up to 1,087, a number that was both a record as well in addition to being the first ever tournament in Colorado poker history with more than 1,000 entries.

When all was said and done for the night, Rick Burleson (478,000) was atop the counts, beating his friend Alex Smith’s Day 1c count of 399,000 of whom he came with. The man from Rapid City, SD saw a rapid increase to his stack after becoming one of the last entries into the tournament. He found a couple doubles to break 100,000 before scoring a big knockout with a flush to get to near a quarter-million. A turned set of deuces that became a full house by the river cracked kings to take him over 400,000 near the beginning of the final level of the night, and he ascended from there to just shy of a half-million to take what will be a top-three stack into Sunday’s Day 2.

Day 1d was the largest field of the four and with it came even more big stacks. Bryan Wienhoff (403,000), Peter Shuldiner (394,000), Lorenzo Banuelos (387,000), and Jason Johnson (349,000) round out the top five. Just below them are two more formidable opponents in Kevin Eyster (341,000) and Schuyler Thornton (340,000), both of which also saw their stacks multiply through the final three levels of the night.

Others were not as fortunate. Ryan Dodson, Jason Vanstrom, David Blankenship, Ben Keeline, and Terry Harper were just a few players who came up the mountain Saturday after not advancing in one or more of the three earlier flights only to fall short once again.

In total, 138 players will be returning Sunday for Day 2’s noon start time. One hundred and seventeen of them will make it into the money and earn a first-level payout of $620, though players are sure to have their eyes set on the first-place prize of $59,525 that will be earned before day’s end.

PokerNews will be back on hand for the home stretch, so make sure to come back and see who reigns triumphant.

Burleson Over 400K

Level 14 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Rick Burleson
Rick Burleson

Rick Burleson was just seen with 260,000 after having been one of the last players to get in the tournament. He just chipped up even further to 416,000 and shared the details of how it went down.

Under the gun limped in and action folded around to Burleson in the cutoff. He limped in as well before the big blind pumped it up to 20,000. The under-the-gun limper folded and Burleson called, taking action heads up to a flop of {9-}{5-}{3-} with two hearts. The big blind made a continuation-bet of 25,000 and Burleson peeled.

The turn came {2-Hearts} to bring a third heart on board and the big blind fired a second barrel for 25,000. Burleson stuck around again and the river fell {3-}. The big blind emptied the clip, betting another 20,000, and Burleson raised him all in. He quickly called.

Big Blind: {k-}{k-}
Rick Burleson: {2-}{2-}

Burleson's flop call brought him gin on the turn and scored him a knockout and a pot that vaulted him over 400,000, making him the likely chip leader in the room with a handful of minutes left in Level 14.

Onom Wins Regardless of Controversy

Level 11 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Joel Verbeck
Joel Verbeck

Altanulzii Onom opened the action with a raise to 5,000 in middle position and was called by Joel Verbeck in the small blind. The flop came {j-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{k-Spades} and Verbeck checked. Onom made a continuation-bet of 5,000 and Verbeck called.

Both players checked the turn {k-Diamonds} to bring the river {7-Clubs} and Verbeck put out a bet of 6,000. Onom dropped one T100 chip out onto the felt and quietly announced he was all in.

Verbeck thought Onom had called and tabled {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds} for the bluff. Meanwhile, Onom thought his shove had been called and tabled {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}. The floor was called and four players at the table confirmed they heard Onom say he was all in, making that the ruling.

Verbeck folded, exclaiming the ruling was "bull shit." He chose to only commit the 6,000 either way and folded his tabled second-best hand. The pot was sent to Onom, resulting in the same outcome regardless of how it came to be.

Blankenship Gets a Lucky Double

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
David Blankenship
David Blankenship

David Blankenship opened the action with a raise to 3,000 in early position and action folded around to Stuart Brown, who was on the button and put in a three-bet large enough to put everybody all in that still had cards. Both players in the blinds folded and Blankenship took his remaining chips and splashed them down onto the felt in front of him.

David Blankenship: {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds}
Stuart Brown: {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs}

"I f*****g knew you had ace-king," said Blankenship, standing up and fully aware that the odds were against him. The flop was {10-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} to give him nine more outs at a flush and the turn {k-Diamonds} quickly filled up his draw.

"Sit back down!" said somebody at the table as the river {4-Hearts} completed the runout to give Blankenship the double.

Hampel Toasted

Level 7 : 400/800, 800 ante
Dave Hampel
Dave Hampel

Action was heads up between Matthew Caughey in the big blind and Dave Hampel, who was on the button on a board of {9-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{7-Spades} when all the chips got in the middle. Hampel was the one at risk for his tournament life.

Dave Hampel: {q-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}
Matthew Caughey: {8-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}

Hampel found his queens up had run into a straight and needed the river to bring another queen or five. Instead, it came {4-Spades} and he made his way from the table while the pot was shipped Caughey's way.

Fisher Makes the Right Call

Level 5 : 300/500, 500 ante
Thomas Fisher
Thomas Fisher

There was over 7,000 in a heads-up pot on a flop of {6-Spades}{7-Hearts}{a-Hearts} and Thomas Fisher bet 3,300 from the big blind. His opponent was on the button and announced an all-in raise, pushing forward his stack of around 23,000 as he did so.

Fisher thought for close to a minute and then made the call.

All-In Player: {j-Hearts}{9-Hearts}
Thomas Fisher: {a-Clubs}{j-Clubs}

Fisher had called correctly with his top pair and needed to fade the remaining hearts in the deck to win the pot. The turn {a-Spades} and river {5-Clubs} were both safe on his end and he scored the knockout to bring his stack up to just shy of 70,000.
