Beit Leads the Field Through Day 1b of the 2020 MSPT Venetian $1,600 Main Event

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Jora Beit
Jora Beit

Friday's Day 1b of the 2020 Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) Venetian $1,600 Main Event has come and gone, playing 10 full levels with 492 more entries being recorded through the day's 10 hours of play. Of those 493 entries, 146 players were remaining at day's end, and Jora Beit found himself atop the counts with a stack of 345,000.

Beit came into play hot off a second-place finish in an earlier $300 DeepStack Extravaganza that earned him $10,998, and he was able to carry that momentum through the second of two starting flights to take a stack of more than 200 big blinds into Sunday's Day 2.

Matt Bond (321,500) also ended the day above 300,000, finishing not only second in the counts, but also second overall in chips among the 226 combined players who earned their way to Day 2 among the first two flights. The pair of players were the only two to finish larger stacks than Day 1a chip leader Salim Admon (293,000). Other players among the top stacks when chips went into bags included Dale Eberle (279,500) and Nahid Toma (268,000).

The above players were far from the only notables to advance, with others including Tim Reilly (229,000), Viet Vo (186,000), Phil Mader (139,500), and MSPT Hall of Famer Blake Bohn (71,000). The Massey brothers, Aaron (148,500) and Ralph (93,500) also made it through after spending a significant portion of the day at the same table as one another.

Bob Whalen, Lee Markholt, Todd Sladek, Cody Espeseth, and Ryan Dodson were among those who failed to advance, and most, if not all will be expected to try their hand at advancing on Saturday's Day 1c, the final of three starting flights.

Just like last weekend's $1,100 Main Event, Saturday is sure to bring an overflowing influx of players looking to add their names to Sunday's Day 2 roster. Play begins at 11:10 a.m. for the final flight, though all who wish to play are recommended to arrive significantly earlier to ensure they get a seat before the list of alternates takes effect.

PokerNews will be providing you all of the action that is sure to ensue, so be sure to come back and follow along.

Tice Hits Six Figures

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Landon Tice
Landon Tice

Landon Tice was in middle position and called an under-the-gun open to 2,400. Action folded around to the players in the blinds, who both called to take postflop action four ways.

The flop came {8-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{q-Spades} and both blinds checked. The player under the gun made a continuation-bet of 6,500 and Tice called. Both players in the blinds folded and heads-up action checked through the turn {3-Clubs}.

The river fell {5-Hearts} and the under-the-gun player bet another 6,500. Tice shoved for 38,000 and his opponent made the call.

Upon being called, Tice showed {j-Hearts}{9-Hearts} and his opponent mucked. The player's hand was not retrieved despite the all-in situation, and Tice was paid for the double to take his stack over 100,000.

"Farmer Phil" Gets a Double

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Phil Mader
Phil Mader

There was a pile of chips already in the middle with multiway action on a flop of {6-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{8-Hearts} where action checked to the player on the button, who bet 5,500. Matt Bond called in the small blind to put action onto "Farmer" Phil Mader in the big blind, who check-shoved for 17,000. The player on the button folded and then Bond called.

Phil Mader: {7-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}
Matt Bond: {4-Spades}{4-Hearts}

Mader's flopped nuts needed an unpaired board on the runout and he got just that as the turn {k-Hearts} and river {5-Clubs} both fell safely to score him the double.

Shainiuk Shows the Bluff

Level 8 : 400/800, 800 ante
Roman Shainiuk
Roman Shainiuk

There was around 5,000 from preflop action between Roman Shainiuk in early position and Truyen Nguyen, who was on the button. Shainiuk had a bet out in front of him on a flop of {3-Clubs}{a-Spades}{10-Diamonds} and was in the process of calling a raise to 9,000 from Nguyen.

Both players checked the turn {k-Diamonds} and the river fell {k-Spades}. Shainiuk threw out a bet of 16,000.

Nguyen looked up at Shainiuk across the table and shook his head with a smile before sending his cards to the muck. Shainiuk raised his cards to show Nguyen, and then threw {5-Spades}{4-Spades} onto the table for nothing more than a missed wheel draw.

Garosshen Ices An Opponent

Level 7 : 300/600, 600 ante
Kevin Garosshen
Kevin Garosshen

Kevin Garosshen opened the action with a raise to 1,500 in the hijack and saw the cutoff call behind as well as both players in the blinds. All four players checked through a flop of {j-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{j-Clubs} and the turn came {7-Spades}.

The players in the blinds both checked again and Garosshen put out a bet of 2,500. Only the big blind called. The river fell {q-Diamonds} and the big blind quickly gathered all of his chips into one stack and slid it forward onto the felt. Garosshen called and both players immediately tabled their hands.

Big Blind: {j-Hearts}{6-Hearts}
Kevin Garosshen: {7-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}

"Quads!" said a player at the table. The big blind saw the bad news: his full house had run into one of the only two hands that could beat it in Garosshen's four sevens and he was eliminated from the tournament as a result.

Larson Back Over Starting Stack

Level 6 : 300/500, 500 ante
David Larson
David Larson

Four players saw a flop of {8-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{k-Spades} with at least 12,000 in the middle and everybody checked to David Larson, who was in the hijack and bet 4,500. Only one player called from early position and action proceeded heads up to the turn {3-Spades}.

The early-position player checked again and Larson gathered his remaining 7,300 and put it into the middle. His opponent thought for a bit and then took 7,500 worth of chips and called.

David Larson: {a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}
Early-Position Player: {j-Hearts}{10-Hearts}

Larson's top pair, top kicker was ahead of his opponent's open-ended straight draw and the river {10-Diamonds} kept his kings best to earn him the double and then some. With the pot, Larson now finds himself at 42,000 after spending most of the day thus far below starting stack.

Level 5 : 200/400, 400 ante
Mike Shin
Mike Shin

The 2019 MSPT Player of the Year Mike Shin has just been spotted in his seat at Table 1. Shin finished in ninth place at last week's $1,100 Main Event, continuing his MSPT success from the prior year, and looks to find a bag on Day 1b after failing to do so in yesterday's Day 1a.

Also at Shin's table is Blake Whittington, another familiar face to the MSPT. Whittington also fell short of advancing on his first try yesterday and is off to a better start this time around with a stack of 71,500.

Peck Takes a Stack

Level 4 : 200/300, 300 ante
Austin Peck
Austin Peck

A player limped in under the gun and Brandon Lombardo limped in on the player's direct left. The cutoff became the third limper of the hand and then Austin Peck pumped it up to 2,000 in the small blind. Everybody called, taking four-way action to the streets.

The flop dropped {7-Clubs}{2-Spades}{10-Hearts} and Peck made a continuation-bet of 2,500. The under-the-gun player called and then Lombardo and the cutoff folded.

With action heads up, the turn came {5-Hearts} and Peck continued with a second barrel of 6,500. The under-the-gun player immediately shoved over the top for around 23,000 and Peck announced a call.

All-In Player: {10-Clubs}{9-Clubs}
Austin Peck: {a-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}

Peck was ahead and found himself to be the one to improve as the river {a-Spades} completed the runout to give him a set of aces and earn him both the pot and the knockout.

Bohn Nears Six Figures

Level 4 : 200/300, 300 ante
Blake Bohn
Blake Bohn

Blake Bohn was in middle position and three-bet an early-position open of 600, making it 2,100 to go. The player on the button cold-called and action folded back to the original raiser, who also called.

All three players checked the flop {a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}{5-Hearts} and the turn came {4-Diamonds}. The early-position player bet 2,000 and Bohn called. The player on the button then folded, bringing the river {9-Diamonds}. The player in early position reached for chips, mulling between different denominations before ultimately deciding to check.

With action on Bohn, he threw in a bet of 20,000, which was most of his opponent's remaining chips, and quickly got a fold to earn him the pot.
