Welcome To Day 1b of the 2020 MSPT Venetian $1,600 Main Event

MSPT
MSPT

The second of three starting flights for the 2020 Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) Venetian $1,600 Main Event is ready to get underway Friday morning at 11:10 a.m.

After Thursday's Day 1a drew 252 entries, the guaranteed prize pool of $400,000 will already be surpassed by the time players are in their seats for the start of the day. It's been no surprise that the Venetian's series-long large field sizes have continued into this event, and with registration and unlimited re-entry open throughout the entire day, another big crowd is expected to show up.

Players receive 30,000 in chips to start with blinds of 100/100. Levels are an hour apiece with 15-minute breaks after Levels 2, 4, and 8 and a 45-minute dinner break at the completion of Level 6 (approximately 5:40 p.m. local time). Play will conclude for the evening at the end of Level 10 (600/1,200/1,200).

Sixty-eight have already earned their seat into Day 2 and Salim Admon (293,000) of Sherman Oaks, CA is the current player to catch. PokerNews will be covering the action from a six-foot distance, so keep it here to see who else makes it through the day.

Peck Wins a Couple

Level 1 : 100/100, 0 ante
Austin Peck
Austin Peck

Hand #1: A limped pot with a dead small blind resulted in three players seeing a flop of {q-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}. Chet Sickle bet 500 in the big blind and Austin Peck called. The cutoff also called and the dealer brought the turn {3-Spades}.

Sickle checked to Peck, who bet 1,500 and received a call from the cutoff. Sickle then folded, taking action heads up to the river {j-Hearts}. Peck fired out another 2,600 and the cutoff thought for roughly a full minute before looking up Peck.

Peck obliged, showing {a-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} for the flopped nuts. His opponent flashed {k-}{j-} for trips on the river before mucking to earn Peck the pot.

"That's a pretty good flop for that hand!" responded the player on Peck's right.

Hand #2: On the very next hand, the player on the button open-limped and the small blin raised to 800. Peck three-bet to 2,200 and only the small blind called.

The flop was {q-Spades}{q-Clubs}{q-Diamonds} and the small blind checked. Peck continuation-bet for 1,500 and the small blind check-raised to 5,500. Peck thought for a few moments and then called.

The turn came {10-Clubs}. The small blind slowed down, checking to Peck again. Peck stoically sat for a few moments and then put a bet out of 3,300. The small blind decided he no longer wanted to continue in the hand and sent his cards to the muck and Peck took down his second pot in as many hands.

Jattin Doubles With Queens

Level 2 : 100/200, 0 ante
Farid Jattin
Farid Jattin

Farid Jattin had just gotten stacks all in against a player across the table and his winning hand of {q-Spades}{q-Clubs} was tabled on a board reading {4-Spades}{9-Clubs}{7-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}.

Jattin's opponent's hand had already been mucked and the dealer was in the process of counting Jattin's remaining stack of 31,100 that would be doubled in addition to the 5,200 already in the middle from prior action. His opponent sent the proper amount to the dealer, who in turn shipped it over to Jattin, and Jattin now finds himself with over 67,000 early in the start of Level 2.

Pappas Turns a Better Two Pair

Level 2 : 100/200, 0 ante
Billy Pappas
Billy Pappas

Roman Shainiuk open-limped in the hijack and saw Billy Pappas raise to 800 on the button. The big blind called, as did Shainiuk, and the three went to a flop of {a-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{q-Spades}.

Action checked to Pappas and he made a continuation-bet of 1,700, which was check-raised by the big blind to a minimum value of 3,400. Shainiuk got out of the way and then Pappas thought for about a minute before calling.

The turn came {7-Hearts} and the big blind bet 7,000. Pappas took about 25 seconds and then shoved for 19,000. The big blind confirmed the amount and took about 20 seconds before making the call.

Billy Pappas; {a-Spades}{7-Spades}
Big Blind: {a-Clubs}{5-Clubs}

The big blind had flopped aces up but Pappas turned a better version of it and faded the two outer on the river {j-Diamonds} to earn the double.

Faraz Jaka
Faraz Jaka

Faraz Jaka was down to 9,500 and got it all into the middle preflop in the hijack against the small blind, who had Jaka at risk.

Faraz Jaka: {a-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}
Small Blind: {a-Clubs}{j-Hearts}

Jaka had his opponent dominated and his hand remained best as the board ran out {8-Spades}{10-Hearts}{7-Spades}{3-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}, fading the gutshot straight draw his opponent flopped to secure the double.

Bohn Nears Six Figures

Level 4 : 200/300, 300 ante
Blake Bohn
Blake Bohn

Blake Bohn was in middle position and three-bet an early-position open of 600, making it 2,100 to go. The player on the button cold-called and action folded back to the original raiser, who also called.

All three players checked the flop {a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}{5-Hearts} and the turn came {4-Diamonds}. The early-position player bet 2,000 and Bohn called. The player on the button then folded, bringing the river {9-Diamonds}. The player in early position reached for chips, mulling between different denominations before ultimately deciding to check.

With action on Bohn, he threw in a bet of 20,000, which was most of his opponent's remaining chips, and quickly got a fold to earn him the pot.

Peck Takes a Stack

Level 4 : 200/300, 300 ante
Austin Peck
Austin Peck

A player limped in under the gun and Brandon Lombardo limped in on the player's direct left. The cutoff became the third limper of the hand and then Austin Peck pumped it up to 2,000 in the small blind. Everybody called, taking four-way action to the streets.

The flop dropped {7-Clubs}{2-Spades}{10-Hearts} and Peck made a continuation-bet of 2,500. The under-the-gun player called and then Lombardo and the cutoff folded.

With action heads up, the turn came {5-Hearts} and Peck continued with a second barrel of 6,500. The under-the-gun player immediately shoved over the top for around 23,000 and Peck announced a call.

All-In Player: {10-Clubs}{9-Clubs}
Austin Peck: {a-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}

Peck was ahead and found himself to be the one to improve as the river {a-Spades} completed the runout to give him a set of aces and earn him both the pot and the knockout.

2019 MSPT Player of the Year Shin Sighted

Level 5 : 200/400, 400 ante
Mike Shin
Mike Shin

The 2019 MSPT Player of the Year Mike Shin has just been spotted in his seat at Table 1. Shin finished in ninth place at last week's $1,100 Main Event, continuing his MSPT success from the prior year, and looks to find a bag on Day 1b after failing to do so in yesterday's Day 1a.

Also at Shin's table is Blake Whittington, another familiar face to the MSPT. Whittington also fell short of advancing on his first try yesterday and is off to a better start this time around with a stack of 71,500.
