Adam Friedman Leads After Day 1a of the MSPT Showdown Series $1,100 Main Event

Level 15 : 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Adam Friedman

Day 1a of the MSPT Showdown Series $1,100 Main Event at San Diego’s Sycuan Casino attracted 131 runners, but after a little over 14 levels of play the field was whittled down to the final 15 with three-time WSOP bracelet winner and MSPT JACK Cleveland champ Adam Friedman leading the way.

His monster stack of 816,000 is more than double that of Nic Getzen (322,000), his next-closest competitor. Others to bag were Jimmy Donuts (305,000), 2004 WSOP Main Event champ Greg Raymer (271,000), Adam Demersseman (188,000), and Minnesota’s Tony Hartmann (106,000).

Among those to fire and fall on Day 1a were Nick Yunis, Alex Winter, Andrew Moreno, Hannah and Happy Spaulding, Brad Sailor, WSOP bracelet winner Ben Moon, MSPT champs Chad Bjorkman, Ken Baime, and Rich Alsup.

There are still two more starting flights to be had with Day 1b and 1c taking place at 3 p.m. on Friday and Saturday respectively. PokerNews will be on hand to capture all the action, so be sure to join us then.

Two Pair Over Two Pair Sends Gorenc to the Rail

Level 13 : 2,000/3,000, 3,000 ante
Marty Gorenc
Marty Gorenc

Jimmy Donuts raised the button to 8,000 and both Greg Raymer and Marty Gorenc called from the small and big blinds respectively.

Two checks on the {7-Clubs}{a-Spades}{10-Diamonds} flop saw Donuts continue for 7,000 and both his opponents called to see the {9-Hearts} turn.

Two more checks saw Donuts toss out another bet, Raymer folded, and Gorenc check-jammed all in for approximately 60,000. Donuts snap-called and Gorenc discovered the bad news.

Jimmy Donuts: {a-Clubs}{10-Hearts}
Marty Gorenc: {9-Spades}{7-Spades}

Both players had two pair but the aces and tens of donuts was best. The {k-Diamonds} river was no help to Gorenc and he headed for the exit.

Friedman Sets Up Alsup

Level 11 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Rich Alsup
Rich Alsup

MSPT Hall of Famer Rich Alsup raised to 7,500 from early position and three-time WSOP bracelet winner Adam Friedman, who has been the big-time chip leader most of the day, called next to act.

The player on the button then moved all in for 9,000, both blinds got out of the way, and two calls were made.

On the {a-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} flop, Alsup bet 10,000 and Friedman called to create a side pot. The dealer then burned and turned the {q-Clubs}, which saw Alsup bet 23,000, leaving himself 54,500 behind.

Friedman paused a few beats before sliding out a stack of orange T5,000 chips for a raise to 100,000. Alsup hit the tank for nearly two minutes, seemingly on the verge of folding. He was hesitant, seemed to waver back and forth between calling and folding, but eventually settled on the former.

Rich Alsup: {a-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}
Adam Friedman: {6-Clubs}{6-Hearts}
Button: {a-Spades}{10-Clubs}

Alsup had top two pair but it was no good as Friedman had bottom set. That said, both Alsup and the at-risk button player were drawing live.

The dealer burned a final time and put out the {3-Clubs} on the river. It was a safe card for Friedman, who scored the double elimination and chipped up to 570,000, nearly seven times the current average stack.

Regional Champ Eliminates Bracelet Winner

Level 10 : 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante
Armano Mesina
Armano Mesina

WSOP bracelet winner Ben Moon moved all in for 14,000 from the hijack only to have last weekend's MSPT Sycuan Regional Event champ Armando Mesina, who barely had him covered, three-bet all in himself from the cutoff. The rest of the players folded and the hands were turned up.

Armando Mesina: {k-Spades}{q-Hearts}
Ben Moon: {a-Clubs}{j-Spades}

Moon got it in ahead but fell behind on the {q-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} flop. The {q-Clubs} turn left him drawing dead and the meaningless {5-Diamonds} was run out on the river.

"See you tomorrow," Moon said before heading for the exit.

Christina Read Ousted

Level 6 : 300/600, 600 ante
Christina Read
Christina Read

After the under-the-gun player raised to 1,600 and another player in early position three-bet to 5,600, Christina Read just called with the {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs} on the button.

Both blinds folded, the original raiser four-bet jammed, and the early-position player got out of the way. Read called off for 22,000 total and it was off to the races as her opponent held {5-}{5-}.

Read took the lead when a king appeared on the flop, and while she held through the turn, disaster struck on the river when a five spiked to give her opponent a winning set.

Donuts Goes Nuts

Level 5 : 300/500, 500 ante
Andrew Moreno
Andrew Moreno

Andrew Moreno, the husband of longtime PokerNews hostess Kristy Arnett, opened with a raise and the player on the button called. Jimmy Donuts then three-bet jammed for 9,700 from the small blind, Moreno came along, and the other player got out of the way.

Andrew Moreno: {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs}
Jimmy Donuts: {a-Clubs}{8-Clubs}

Moreno had the bigger ace and Donuts was in trouble; however, the latter picked up both straight and flush draws on the {9-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} flop. The {6-Hearts} turn was nothing special, but the {q-Clubs} river was as it gave Donuts the club flush and the double.

Get to Know 3-Time WSOP Bracelet Winner Adam Friedman

Level 4 : 200/400, 400 ante
Adam Friedman
Adam Friedman

One of the most accomplished and skilled poker players in today’s field is no doubt Ohio’s Adam Friedman. If you don’t believe us, his poker résumé will surely convince you.

Let’s start with the MSPT. Friedman has amassed $349,707 in tour earnings, which puts him 22nd on the tour all-time money list. He has cashed 14 MSPT Main Events and amazingly has made the final table of those seven times! In January 2018, he finished third in the MSPT JACK Cleveland Casino for $52,976, and the following year returned to win it for $121,405.

According to The Hendon Mob, Friedman has more than $3.1 million in live tournament earnings, which puts him seventh on the Ohio all-time money list. His biggest cash of $312,417 when he won the 2019 World Series of Poker Event #35: $10,000 Dealers Choice Championship for what was his third gold bracelet.

His second came the year before in the same event, good for $293,275, while his first came in the 2012 WSOP Event #15: $5,000 Seven Card Stud for $269,037. The trio of bracelet wins constitutes Friedman’s three biggest scores.

Additionally, Friedman is a high-stakes mixed cash game player. While he’s been hibernating during the pandemic, Friedman opted to travel out west to try his hand in his first tournament in more than a year.

Time will tell if he can capture his second MSPT title.

The year before that, he made a run in the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event placing 167th for $44,728, which came just a few months after he finished third in the 2014 Chicago Poker Classic Event #2: $500 NLHE for $42,219.

On the MSPT, Sailor has $66,294 in career earnings from a single regional cash and eight Main Event cashes, including two final table appearance. The Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT), which has awarded more than $110 million in prize money since its debut in December 2009, is in Southern California for the first time! For the past week, the tour has partnered with Sycuan Casino Resort to play host to an 11-event series deemed the “MSPT Showdown Series.”

Last weekend, things kicked off with the $360 buy-in, $100K GTD MSPT Regional Event, which saw 65-year-old Armando Mesia top a massive 1,047-entry field to win the tournament for a career-high score.

This weekend, the $1,100 buy-in, $200,000 GTD Main Event will play out starting with today's Day 1a field at 3 p.m. local time. The tournament, which will also offer Day 1b and 1c flights at the same time on Friday and Saturday respectively, will start players with 25,000 in chips and play 15 levels. Those who survive will then return at 11 a.m. local time on Sunday to play down to a winner.

The tournament offers a max of one reentry per starting flight. There will be a 10-minute break after every three levels, each lasting 40 minutes. This tournament will play 8-handed throughout. This tournament will transition from Big Blind Ante to Standard Ante when 24 players remain.

In between the two bookend tournaments, there have been nine other trophy events including a $200 MSPT Ladies Event powered by Poker League of Nations (PLON), a $360 Seniors (50+) tournament, and a $250 MSPT Tag Team Championship. There were also both pot-limit Omaha and pot-limit Omaha 8 or Better Championships. We will be sprinkling in mini-recaps for all those events throughout this weekend's coverage of the Main Event.
