Welcome to Day 1a of the MSPT Riverside Main Event!

The 2022 Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) continues this weekend with another stop in the great state of Iowa for the $1,100 buy-in, $500,000 GTD Main Event at Riverside Casino, just 10-minutes south of Iowa City.

This is the third time the MSPT will be returning to Riverside Casino, which saw turnouts of 862 and 928 during its last two stops in March and July 2021.

Both outings awarded over $100K for first place with Daniel Sepiol taking down the inaugural event for $162,750 while Timothy Gundrum secured $170,769 for his victory.

Starting Flight Outlook

Today marks the first of three starting flights and play is set to get underway at 3 p.m. local time. Plenty of MSPT regulars are expected to make their way to Riverside from throughout the country in hopes of adding an MSPT Main Event title to their name.

The standard MSPT Main Event structure is in play, with 25,000 starting stacks and blinds beginning at 100/100/100. Levels will increase every 40-minutes throughout the entirety of the tournament.

Fifteen levels are scheduled for Day 1a play, unless 12% of the field is reached prior, with breaks occurring after the completion of every three levels, or two hours of play. Late registration is open until the beginning of Level 13 at approximately 11:40 p.m. local time.

Berthelsen Flushes Brenden for Double Up

There was heads-up action between Kevin Berthelsen from the hijack and Harold Brenden from the small blind.

The board read and Brenden called a 7,000 raise from Berthelsen to see the complete the board on the river.

Brenden checked to Berthelsen who moved all-in for 13,200 and Brenden reluctantly called.

Berthelsen quickly showed for the king-high flush and collected his double-up after Brenden mucked his hand facedown.

Landazzi Hooks a Double

The player under the gun opened for 1,700 and found three callers before Joe Landazzi squeezed for 15,400 from the big blind.

Only the hijack called, and the two players tabled their hands.

Nguyen Turns Ace to Double Through Opponent

A series of preflop raises saw Ha Nguyen get his 18,400 stack in the middle from the big blind and was called by the player under the gun.

It was a classic race with Nguyen looking to connect with either of his two over cards but neither came on the flop.

"Ace one time," Nguyen asked the dealer as they dropped the on the turn to put him out in front.

Nguyen just needed to fade a jack on the river and did, as the completed the board to secure his double-up.

Baime Coolered by Rickert

Brad Sailor raised to 1,200 from early position and found three callers which included Julie Rickert from middle position, along with Ken Baime from the small blind.

The flop was checked to Sailor who continued for 2,800 and Rickert called before Biam check-raised to 10,500.

After the big blind and Sailor folded, Rickert called, bringing the turn.

Biame led out for 15,000 and Rickert quickly called to see the complete the board on the river.

Biame continued with his aggression with an all in bet and Rickert snap-called holding just slightly more.

Biame rolled over for the king-high flush but it was second best as Rickert held for the nuts to eliminate Baime.

McFate Wins Race to Drop Opponent

A player from middle position open-jammed for 14,600, Dan McFate came over the top from the hijack and got isolation.

It was a classic race with McFate keeping the lead after the flop hit the felt.

The turn did give McFate's opponent a Broadway draw but the was a brick on the river and McFate scored the elimination.

Howard Doubles Through Fielder

There were three players that saw a flop and action was checked to Taylor Howard who fired out 5,500 from under the gun.

Action was on Jeff Fielder, who raised to 30,000 from late position and he got a quick fold from the big blind while Howard called off his 27,700 stack.

Howard was ahead after flopping two-pair but had a sweat after the turn gave Fielder an open-ended straight draw.

Luckily for Howard, the river was a brick, and he collected his double-up.

Sailor Out Kicked by Lin

There was heads-up action after a flop between Brad Sailor from the cutoff and Zhicheng Lin from the button.

Sailor moved all-in for 14,400 and Lin took some time in the tank before making the call.

Both players flopped top pair and Sailor had kicker issues but also held a heart flush draw.

The did pair the board on the turn bringing possible chop outs but the completed the board on the river and Sailor made his exit from the tournament field.

Williams Drops One with Cowboys

Williams continued for 15,000 only to have the cutoff raise all in for 49,000.

The button player quickly folded their hand while Williams snap called.
