Gutierrez Gets Value from Welch

Level 13 : 2,000/3,000, 3,000 ante

Zach Gutierrez opened in the hijack and received a call from Jason Welch, who defended his big blind. Welch check-called a continuation-bet from Gutierrez on a flop of {8-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds}, and followed it up with two more check-calls of 11,000 on {4-Spades} and 25,000 on {a-Hearts}.

Upon Welch calling on the end, Gutierrez flipped over {a-Spades}{2-Diamonds} for trips and earned the pot as Welch sent his cards to the muck.

Meanwhile, play has otherwise been fairly slow since returning from the final break, with the only elimination occurring being that of Jason Vanstrom shortly after trying to find a last-minute bag for the night.

An ace on the flop came to give McMaster top pair and send West to the showers, bringing the field down to 21 just past the midway point in Level 13.

"Those Aren't Aces!"

Level 13 : 2,000/3,000, 3,000 ante
Krzysztof Stybaniewicz
Krzysztof Stybaniewicz

Krzysztof Stybaniewicz opened the action with a raise to 7,000 in the cutoff and received a call from Derek McMaster, who defended his big blind along with a claim that he was going to crack Stybaniewicz's pocket aces. Both players checked the flop {5-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}, bringing the turn {7-Diamonds}.

"I'm gonna bet 7,000," said McMaster, throwing a matching amount onto the felt. Stybaniewicz called and the river came {7-Spades}. McMaster fired out another 11,000 and Stybaniewicz wasted no time calling and showing {10-Spades}{10-Clubs}.

"Those aren't aces!" said McMaster. He mucked nonetheless.

Chip Counts from Table 9

Level 14 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante

All of the chips went into the middle preflop during a recent hand between Derek McMaster and Michael Kinzer, with Kinzer finding a double for his stack of 136,000 thanks to his pocket aces holding against McMaster's ace-king. Updated counts from the entire table have been provided below, with 20 players now remaining.

Kinzer Knocks Out McMaster

Level 14 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Michael Kinzer
Michael Kinzer

Derek McMaster saw action fold to him on the button and open-jammed for 40,000. Michael Kinzer called in the big blind.

Derek McMaster: {j-Hearts}{9-Hearts}
Michael Kinzer: {7-Hearts}{7-Clubs}

McMaster found no help as the board ran out {q-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{2-Spades}, leaving Kinzer's pocket sevens best to win the coin flip and eliminate him in 19th place from the flight. Two full tables now remain in play with an hour left in the day unless three eliminations occur before that time.

Jacks Lose for Stacks

Level 14 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Chris Quackenbush
Chris Quackenbush

Hand #1: Thom Schultz opened the action with a raise to 16,000 in middle position and saw action fold around to Peter Nigh, who three-bet to 63,000 in the small blind.

"All in," responded Schultz as soon as the dealer announced the three-bet, and Nigh called just as quickly.

Thom Schultz: {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}
Peter Nigh: {j-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}

Schultz connected with the flop {k-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{2-Spades} but picked up four more outs to sweat on the turn {9-Clubs}. The river {10-Spades} was safe and he scored the dub, leaving Nigh short in the process.

Hand #2: At the same time on the adjacent table, action folded to Chris Quackenbush in the small blind and he completed. Peter Johnson checked his option and the two went to a flop of {4-Spades}{3-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}, where Quackenbush check-shoved for 91,000 over a bet of 10,000 from Johnson. After a while in the tank, Johnson found a call.

Chris Quackenbush: {j-}{j-}
Peter Johnson: {8-}{5-}

An eight on the turn gave Johnson trips, with no jack falling on the river to bring about Quackenbush's elimination from Day 1a in 18th place. As a result, Johnson now looks to have the largest stack in the room once more with the field being just two eliminations away from reaching an early end of the night.
