Grimes Laps the Field on Day 1a

Level 15 : 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Jeff Grimes
Jeff Grimes

A lengthy day of 15 levels has wrapped up at Mid-States Poker Tour Riverside with 48 of 354 entries making it through to Day 2. And one chip count far outdistanced the rest.

Jeff Grimes managed to turn his 25,000 starting stack into a staggering 809,000 by night's end. His heater kicked into high gear during the final two hours. He was in a neck-and-neck race with Nick Pupillo for the chip lead with both players pushing toward 500,000.

Then, Grimes picked up aces on the very last hand and busted a player who had kings. That was enough to rocket him well past Pupillo — who finished in second with 495,000 — and the rest of the competition for a stack that's rarely been seen at the end of an MSPT Day 1.

Some other players who made it through included Kevin Berthelsen, Alex Ziskin, Andy Rogowski, Jorden Helstern, Byron Ziebell, Keith Heine, Rob Wazwaz and Kou Vang.

Some who took shots and missed included Eddie Blumenthal, Steve Buell, Jeff Fielder, Mike Lang, Ryan Phan and Phil Mader.

They'll all have chances to run it back and do better on Saturday, when Day 1b will see the prize pool continue to swell, surely well past $500,000 if the excellent turnout thus far is any indication. Come right back to PokerNews for more coverage starting at 3 p.m.

Vang Loses With Bullets

Level 15 : 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Kou Vang
Kou Vang

After an open to 10,000 by Keith Heine and a shove worth 60,000 from Terence Reid in the hijack in one of the last hands at the previous level, Kou Vang cold-called in the small blind. Heine shook his head and folded.

Reid: {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}
Vang: {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs}

Reid nailed the {k-Clubs} in the window and it was followed by {3-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{6-Clubs} to keep his set a winner.

Pupillo Rolling on Second Shell

Level 11 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Nick Pupillo
Nick Pupillo

Action was heavy on a flop of {4-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{9-Spades} as the small blind bet 7,500, the big blind made it 21,500, and Nick Pupillo shoved all in from middle position for 79,500. The small blind waved his hands in consternation approximately 20 times before folding. The big blind snap-mucked.

Pupillo swept up the sizable pot without showing, and his second shell has gotten off to a fantastic start as he's well into six figures after less than an hour.

Three Scalps for Hindman

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
MSPT Riverside Day 1a
MSPT Riverside Day 1a

John Orfanos got his short stack in preflop from under the gun and was called in three spots. On the {4-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{2-Spades} flop, Todd Sladek was all in from the small blind for about 14,000. Cody Brinn called in middle position, as did Joe Hindman in the cutoff.

On the {6-Spades} turn, Brinn shoved and Hindman instantly called.

Brinn: {a-}{a-}
Hindman: {7-Hearts}{5-Hearts}
Orfanos: {10-Clubs}{5-Clubs}
Sladek: {8-}{5-}

Everyone but Brinn had turned a straight but Hindman's was the nuts. The {3-Spades} river kept him best and he scooped up everyone's stacks.

Holloway Felted

Level 6 : 300/600, 600 ante
Chad Holloway
Chad Holloway

Chad Holloway shoved for 8,100 in middle position and was called by a player a couple of seats over. His {k-}{q-} was dominated by {a-}{k-}, and a nine-high board brought no salvation for him. He wished everyone good luck and headed out.

Players are now on break.

Vang Wastes No Time

Kou Vang hadn't been seated long before he was all in preflop for 21,600 in the big blind. He had the goods, too, showing {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}, and was crushing an opponent who had {a-}{k-} in the cutoff.

The board ran out eight-high and Vang scooped a double to get him off to a fast start. He's also coming off a huge score in Las Vegas a few weeks back after making the final table of WPT Venetian, finishing fifth for a career-best $204,430.

"Red Bull Robbie" Brings Big City Experience to Riverside Casino

Level 4 : 200/400, 400 ante
Robbie Thompson
Robbie Thompson

Back in the day, Robbie Thompson was a staple at the annual World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. Not only that, he was a fixture on the poker circuit.

So how did the man, who hails from Egan, South Dakota (Pop. 720) and still lives in the same house he did when he was just three years old, get to such a spot in the poker world?

In 1993, Thompson, who used to work manual labor, took a job as a blackjack dealer.

“After a couple years in the pit, I made my move to poker,” Thompson previously said in an interview with CardsChat. “I was leaving my shift one day and my manager asked if I would deal poker that night. She knew that I played, so without any training I sat in the box to a 7-Card Stud hi-lo game and the rest is history.”

Eventually, around 2002, Thompson became a traveling dealer and worked his first WSOP in 2004. Two more years of experience saw him dealing the WSOP final table, and from there it was off to gigs on the European Poker Tour and World Poker Tour. In 2008, he had his chance to become the final table announcer of the WSOP.

In 2017, things came full circle when Thompson got off the road and Renee Thomas, the poker room manager at Grand Falls, offered him a job. As it happened, she was the aforementioned manager who gave him his start 25 years earlier.

Thompson has been using his big-time experience at Grand Falls poker room ever since, and given that's a sister property to Riverside Casino, he was brought down to help run the tournament.

Mader Doubles

Level 3 : 200/300, 300 ante

We didn't see the action, but it appeared Phil Mader got all in for 15,400 from the button on a {6-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{3-Spades} flop holding {q-Spades}{q-Clubs}. He was ahead of a player under the gun who showed {a-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} and bricked out as Broadways hit the turn and river.

Mader grabbed a double, as well as the 4,500 or so that was already in the pot.
