Heimiller's Stack Takes a Hit

Level 5 : 200/400, 400 ante

Daniel Heimiller opened to 1,100 from early position and was called by a player on the button and the big blind.

The flop came {3-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} and it was checked to Heimiller, who continued for 2,500. Only the button called.

Both players checked on the {2-Spades} turn and Heimller checked a final time on the {7-Hearts} river, prompting a 6,000 bet from his opponent. Heimiller tanked and eventually put calling chips into the middle.

The player on the button revealed {a-Spades}{3-Spades} and Heimiller mucked.

"Ace-king or ace-queen, that's what I put you on," Heimiller's opponent said.

Marquez Gets All in Three Ways

Level 5 : 200/400, 400 ante
Anthony Marquez From Day 1b
Anthony Marquez From Day 1b

A player open limped from middle position and the player in the lojack raised to 1,600. The button called, Anthony Marquez called from the small blind, the big blind called, and the limper called for a five-way pot.

Everyone checked on the {6-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}; however, Marquez led out for 4,500 on the {7-Hearts} turn. The player in the big blind called and the original limper then shoved for about 50,000. Action folded back around to Marquez, who called all in for about 17,000. The big blind also called all in.

Marquez: {7-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}
Big blind: {a-Hearts}{8-Hearts}
Middle position player: {10-Clubs}{8-Spades}

Marquez needed the board to pair to scoop the massive pot, but the {j-Hearts} river bricked out and he was sent to the rail.

"That's so sick," Marquez said as he stood up from the table.

Engel Calls Light

Level 6 : 300/500, 500 ante

On a flop of {8-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{2-Diamonds}, Ari Engel fired 3,000 into the middle from the small blind. His lone opponent called from middle position.

Both players checked on the {3-Diamonds} turn and Engel checked again on the {9-Clubs} turn, prompting a 12,500 all in from his opponent. Engel asked for a count and eventually called. His opponent revealed {3-Hearts}{3-Spades} for a turned full house and Engel showed {a-Hearts}{j-Hearts} and conceded the pot.

Engel, who is simultaneously playing online poker on his laptop, is down to 20,000.

MSPT Headed Back to Grand Falls Casino August 20-22

Level 7 : 300/600, 600 ante
Grand Falls Casino
Grand Falls Casino

From August 20-22, the Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) will head back to Grand Falls Casino in Larchwood, Iowa, which is actually situated just across the border from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, for a $1,100 buy-in, $200,000 guaranteed Main Event. PokerNews will be offering live updates from the stop.

A series of $70 and $260 satellites starting at the end of July will feed into the Main Event, which will feature two starting flights. Day 1a will take place at 3 p.m. on Friday, August 20 with Day 1b taking place at the same time on Saturday, August 21. The surviving players from both flights will then return for Day 2 at 11 a.m. on Sunday, August 22 to play down to a winner.

In August 2020, a record-breaking MSPT Main Event was held at Grand Falls. That $1,100 buy-in tournament was the first mid-major poker tournament in the United States in nearly six months due to the pandemic, and the 518 entrants not only surpassed the venue’s previous best field of 238 runners in 2015 but also became the largest major ($1,000+ buy-in) in Iowa history. In the end, 47-year-old Mark Collins, a systems administrator from the St. Louis area, came out on top to win a $107,706 top prize and his second MSPT title. He previously won the MSPT Season 9 Canterbury Park for $102,076.

More recently, the MSPT hosted a $1,100 Main Event at Grand Falls back in January, which is when Chad Bjorkman bested a 488-entry field to win a $101,450 top prize. Then in March, Eric Atchison topped a 794-entry field to win the MSPT $360 Regional Event for $46,020 and his second title in two years.
