Arnaud Tops Day 1 of HK$1 Million Triton Hold'em; Ivey Busts Twice

Level 6 : 0/0, 4,000 ante
Romain Arnaud
Romain Arnaud

Day 1 of the HK$1,000,000 Triton Hold'em (Short Deck Ante-Only) event drew 41 entries and 16 players found their way through the first six 60-minute levels. Late registration will remain open through one more level so there might be some more players interested in joining or rejoining the action tomorrow.

So far, Romain Arnaud has managed to amass the most chips, having accumulated 1,580,000. Arnaud mostly increased his belongings in the last level. His pivotal surge came when he eliminated Gabe Patgorski with the nut flush. A couple of more additions to his stack helped Arnaud surpass Kenneth Kee in the overnight standings.

Kee was right at the top for a solid part of the day, having built a big stack in the early stages. Kee left his foot firmly on the pedal and kept piling up to eventually cross 1.5 million in chips, trailing only Arnaud.

Wai Kin Yong rounds out the top three with 1,284,000 in his bag. Yong's most significant moment came when he peeled pocket aces and held against Phil Ivey who put his second tournament life on the line with queen-ten suited. Ivey busted for the second time and took a break before play wrapped up for the day. He might have another shot at the title tomorrow when the action resumes.

While Ivey didn't find a bag tonight, some other North American stars were able to navigate their way into Day 2. Those include HK$1 Million Triton Hold'em Montenegro champion Jason Koon who was able to spin his stack up to 837,000, good for sixth place on the leaderboard. Koon sits behind Peter Jetten (1,169,000) and Alan Sass (1,130,000) who have participated in both previous Triton Hold'em events here in Jeju.

Andrew Robl made his debut today, taking to the felt for the first time at the festival and he finished in the middle of the pack with 610,000. The bottom half of the rankings features Tom Dwan (386,000) and Ben Lamb (315,000), among others.

Day 2 kicks off Sunday, July 29 at 2 p.m. local time with the 5,000 ante and 10,000 button-ante. Come back to follow PokerNews live updates as the 2018 Triton Super High Roller Series will crown the fourth champion tomorrow.

Torbergsen Scoops Another Massive Pot to Send Leow to the Rail and Double Up

Level 6 : 0/0, 4,000 ante
Marius Torbergsen
Marius Torbergsen

Marius Torbergsen raised in the hijack seat to 22,000 with {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades}. Tom Dwan called in the cutoff with {K-Spades}{J-Hearts}. Ivan Leow then called on the button with {A-Hearts}{9-Spades}.

The flop was {K-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} and Torbergsen put out a bet of 30,000. Dwan called, as did Leow.

The turn was the {7-Hearts} and Torbergsen moved all in with 268,000 and both of his opponents called, Dwan with top two pair and Leow with his double gutshot straight draw.

The river was the {6-Hearts} though and that would be the big pot for Torbergsen to chip up to 760,000 while Dwan was left with 254,000. Leow was officially eliminated from the tournament again and he'll have to re-enter if he wants to make a run.

Sass Peels Kings and Stacks Leow

Level 6 : 0/0, 4,000 ante
Alan Sass
Alan Sass

Ivan Leow was all in for 320,000 in the cutoff, holding {J-Clubs}{10-Spades} but ran into the {K-Clubs}{K-Diamonds} of Alan Sass who picked up the high pair on the button. Sass had Leow covered and put him at risk.

The {Q-Spades}{A-Spades}{A-Hearts} flop was great for Sass as Leow needed running cards to catch up. He was offered the {8-Clubs} on the turn to sweat a nine-ball but the {Q-Diamonds} locked it for Sass who increased his stack to 906,000. Leow fired a new bullet.

Chan Stacks Robl With Flush Over Flush

Level 4 : 0/0, 2,000 ante
Wai Leong Chan
Wai Leong Chan

Andrew Robl limped under the gun with {10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} and Ivan Leow overlimped with {K-Hearts}{J-Clubs}. Chan Wai Leong called with {K-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} and Marius Torbergesen checked with {J-Hearts}{7-Clubs}.

They all checked the {J-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{9-Spades} flop and the {6-Diamonds} put Robl in a sick spot as he turned an inferior flush.

Robl checked, Leow fired 15,000 and Chan raised to 45,000. Robl then jammed his 132,000 and Chan called with the second nuts.

Robl could hope for a queen of diamonds to make a straight flush but the {A-Diamonds} appeared on the river and he was forced to use a new bullet.

Cao Dusted by Katz

Level 4 : 0/0, 2,000 ante
Cary Katz
Cary Katz

Action limped to the button where Rui Cao raised to 29,000. Action folded back to Cary Katz and he moved all in for roughly 250,000, enough to cover Cao. Action folded back to Cao and he called, putting himself at risk.

Rui Cao: {K-Clubs}{Q-Spades}
Cary Katz: {A-Diamonds}{K-Spades}

The board ran out {A-Hearts}{8-Spades}{8-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{9-Spades} and Katz made a pair of aces, allowing him to take down the pot and move over 440,000 chips. Cao cashed in his last reload bullet, but was eliminated from the tournament shortly after that.

Ivey Gets Max Value With Pretty Bad Hand

Level 2 : 0/0, 1,000 ante
Phil Ivey
Phil Ivey

Chan Wai Leong raised under the gun and only Phil Ivey called from the button. Chan continued for 15,000 on the {7-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{J-Spades} flop and Ivey called.

Chan slowed down on the {K-Diamonds} turn and checked. Ivey threw in a 40,000-bet and Chan paused before calling.

The river came {7-Hearts} and Chan checked again. Ivey took all of his chips and pushed them across the betting line. Chan fell into a tank-mode and eventually called.

Ivey smiled and showed {A-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}, perhaps thinking that he was caught. But Chan mucked his to the surprise of the table. "Really?" Elton Tsang asked.

Just like that, Ivey managed to cross 400,000 in chips while Chan had to reload.

Phua Taken Out by Chan, Forced to Use Bullet

Level 2 : 0/0, 1,000 ante
Paul Phua
Paul Phua

Elton Tsang limped in with {K-Hearts}{10-Hearts} and Gabe Patgorski called in the hijack with {Q-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}. Chan Wai Leong raised to 11,000 from the cutoff with {K-Spades}{Q-Spades} and Paul Phua moved all in on the button with {A-Hearts}{A-Spades}. Action folded back to Chan and he called.

The flop ran out {10-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{7-Spades} which didn’t help Chan much but the turn was the {Q-Clubs} and the river was the {Q-Hearts} giving him trips and allowing him to take out Phua, who was forced to use a bullet token.

“This game sucks,” Phua said after the hand, laughing.

Torbergesen Forces Bullets from Ivey and Leow

Level 2 : 0/0, 1,000 ante
Marius Torbergsen
Marius Torbergsen

Five players came to the flop of {7-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}{9-Spades} in a limped pot and the action got checked to Ivan Leow who fired 8,000 in the hijack. Rui Cao called on the button and Phil Ivey, sitting directly to Cao's left, moved all in for 107,000. Marius Torbergesen then reshoved and Leow called off.

Ivey: {K-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}
Torbergesen: {J-Spades}{10-Clubs}
Leow: {10-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}

Torbergesen had both of his opponents covered and while he bricked his double gutter on the {7-Hearts} turn, the {Q-Clubs} gave him a winner. Ivey and Leow fired new bullets while Torbergesen soared to 375,000 or so.

Gamblers Get Ready, It's Time for More Triton Hold'em! HK$1,000,000 Triton Hold'em Event Begins Today!

Jason Koon - Winner of the last HK$ 1,000,000 Triton Hold'em Event
Jason Koon - Winner of the last HK$ 1,000,000 Triton Hold'em Event

If the HK$500,000 buy-in Triton Hold'em (Short-Deck) Ante-Only event that Ivan Leow won earlier in the week wasn't enough action for you, you're in luck, because on Saturday, July 28th, the HK$1,000,000 Triton Hold'em (Short Deck) Ante-Only event kicks off. This event is likely to bring out the biggest names and faces as well as the biggest bankrolls as it's the second largest buy-in of this series, which sits at roughly USD $127,000. This is the last chance for any tournament action before the Main Event as well so those looking for a good warm-up will likely join in as well.

The last event of this stature was won by Jason Koon at the Triton Super High Roller Series in Montenegro. That event brought out a stunning field of 103 entries and this event is likely to be the same with a monster turn out and a huge field. The event in Montenegro created a prizepool of HK$96,902,400 (~$12,344,397) and Koon took home HK$28,102,000 ($3,579,914) as his first place prize.

Once again as a refresher for the rules of Triton Hold'em/short deck, all twos, threes, fours, and fives are removed from the deck, and thus, hand rankings are changed to reflect the respective strength of hands. For this events, flushes now play higher than full houses as there is only eight cards to every suit. Other than that, six-plus hold’em is played similarly to regular hold’em with two hole cards, five community cards, and four streets of betting — preflop, flop, turn, and river. Also to note, aces can still play for a low straight, replacing the five, making ace-six-seven-eight-nine a straight as well.

The format will be similar to the other Triton Hold'em/Short Deck events with a starting stack of 100,000 and two reloadable bullets which can be used for an extra 100,000 at any time. Levels for this event will be 60-minutes long and will start with antes at 1,000 with a double ante paid from the button for each hand. Players will have a break after every two levels and a longer break after level 4. The plan is to play 6 levels today and registration will remain open through to Day 2 of the event for one level after that.

PokerNews will be back for all the action and trust us, you won't want to miss this one, so stay tuned for it all.
