The second starting day of the €1,100 Main Event of the 2015 Unibet Poker Open at the Casino Barriere along the French Riviera in Cannes attracted another 229 entries to bump up the overall field to 411 unique participants.

Once the registration was closed at the end of Level 4, the payouts were released. The top 45 spots receive at least €2,210, while the winner can look forward to a payday of €80,000 on Sunday.

Once the 10 levels of play were done and dusted, only 62 players bagged up chips and will be joining the 62 Day 1a survivors at 13:00 local time on Saturday. Julien Sitbon remained the overall chip leader with his 354,300 from Day 1a, however a fellow Julien, Julien Pecheur that is, came very close and bagged up 344,000 on the second starting day.

Pecheur was closely followed by Olivier Jach (313,500) and Michael Lancri (297,500), while other notables with above-average stacks included Nicolay Langfeldt (265,400), Vyacheslav Igin (217,000), Mateusz Syc (171,000), and 2013 Irish Open champion Ian Simpson (102,600).

It was not a good day for everyone at the office, though. More than two-thirds of the field were sent to the rail, and that included familiar names such as Charlotte van Brabander, EPT Malta winner Jean Montury, Nicolas le Floch, Alexandre Reard, Rasmus Agerskov, Paul Valkenburg, Philippe Ktorza, and 2015 Unibet Open Glasgow winner Daniel Chutrov.

Elsewhere, [Removed:247] entertained his table and peeked at 250,000 in chips before imploding and spreading the shrinking tower of chips among his opponents.

The remaining 121 hopefuls will return to the tables at 13:00 local time for Level 11 at blinds 1,200/2,400 and an ante of 300. Whether or not the final table for Sunday will be determined is yet to be seen, but the top 45 spots and money is definitely part of the excitement on the penultimate day. The PokerNews Live Reporting team will be there to provide you with the action all throughout, so stay tuned right here to these pages.

Jean Montury
Jean Montury

Jean Montury had been all the way down to 4,300 chips earlier on before grinding it back up to more than starting stack. The EPT Malta champion from earlier this year then three-bet shoved for around 30,000 into an open from Peter La Terra and the Swede snap-called him with the {J-Spades}{J-Diamonds}.

Montury held {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds} but failed to improve on a board of {10-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{6-Spades}{2-Spades}.

Also eliminated recently: Szymon Bujok and Mikkel Lorentzen.

[Removed:250] Implodes

The self destruction of [Removed:247] is complete. The Frenchman was up to more than 250,000 at peak time according to the only two players that remained from the initial table line up. Down to around 55,000 chips he lost almost all of it by chasing another draw on a {8-}{10-}{K-} flop with the {J-}{9-} and Philip Fjaestad snap-called with {A-}{Q-} to hold up with ace-high.

The remaining chips then went to Julien Pecheur, who is sitting next to the Swede.

Also out: Rasmus Agerskov.

Simpson Thriving Early

Level 3 : 150/300, 50 ante
Ian Simpson
Ian Simpson

Ian Simpson lost a few chips when he got runner runner flushed and then opened to 750 with the {8-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}. Lucas Monnier three-bet to 1,850 from one seat over and was called to see a flop of {5-}{7-}{Q-} with one diamond. The Brit check-called a bet worth 1,900 and then check-raised the {6-} turn from 4,000 to 11,000.

Monnier called and then called the shove on the {3-} river with {A-}{4-} only to see the bad news.

Welcome to Day 1b of the 2015 Unibet Open Cannes

Unibet Open Cannes
Unibet Open Cannes

In half an hour from now at 13:00 local time, the second starting day of the €1,000 + €100 Unibet Open Main Event at the Casino Barriere de Cannes gets underway. Before any card is dealt, the screens already show at least 140 players registered and it seems very likely that the 182 entries of Day 1a will be eclipsed.

Another 10 levels of one hour each are scheduled and the participants receive 30,000 chips each, all on their mission to accumulate as many of them until the bagging and tagging takes place around 01.30 in the morning. The overall leader of the 59 Day 1a survivors is Julien Sitbon and the number to beat for everyone today is 354,300.

Among those to be expected at the tables today are former Unibet Poker representative Paul Valkenburg, Charlotte van Brabander, Irish Open champion Ian Simpson and the defending 2015 Unibet Open Glasgow winner Daniel Chutrov. The live stream will kick off at the start of level three with a delay of 30 minutes and you can follow the action here on PokerNews and on the Unibet Twitch stream.

The weather outside could not be any better in September with more than 25 degrees and sunshine at the French Riviera. Add on top of that the always friendly atmosphere at the Unibet Open and it makes perfect sense why the tournament series is so popular and well established in its seventh season.

Make sure to tune into the PokerNews live reporting to find out whether or not the 457 entries of last year and the overall record of 460 participants will be reached. Besides the Main Event, which finishes on Sunday, there is also a dozen of Side Events including a €2,000 + €200 High Roller on the weekend.
