Twitch and YouTube Sensation Sam "strippin" Thorne Through to Day 2, Former Champs Fall

Level 10 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Sam "Strippin" Thorne
Sam "Strippin" Thorne

Day 1b of the 2015 Unibet Open Copenhagen, which was visiting the Radisson Blu Scandinavia Hotel in Denmark for the third time, attracted 236 entries, which with Day 1a's 168 runners brought the total field up to 404 entrants, just slightly less than last year when Frederik Jensen defeated 405 players to grab the DKK 625,000 first-place prize.

The total prize pool this year is DKK 2,908,800, which translates to €389,984. The lion's share will go to the winner who'll receive DKK 620,000 (€83,115), while 45 players will get into the money and guarantee themselves DKK 15,000 (€2,011). The man best positioned to make a deep run from the Day 1b field is Aage Eikeland, who finished the night as chip leader with 260,000.

He's closely followed by Kristo Gavazov (223,600) and Tiago Santos (211,200).

Day 1b saw a lot of familiar faces, though many would fall before the day reached the completion of 10 levels. Well known online player Simon "ministerborg" Ravnsbæk was one of them, and he wouldn't be standing alone on the rail. He would have enough time to catch up with last year's winner Frederik Brink Jensen. The Unibet Open and European Poker Tour champ first folded a straight on a paired board, only to be shown rivered trips turned into a bluff. He then lost the remainder of his stack with sixes to tens.

Unibet Open Cannes 2013 champion Quentin Lecomte would also hit the rail before the end of the day. He got into an iffy spot when he turned top two pair holding ace-queen against a suddenly check-raising player who had limped before the flop. Lecomte called the turn chec- raise and the river shove, only to be shown the flopped set Quentin feared his opponent would have.

Poker reporting veteran Rikard Åberg was also one of the notables we spotted away from the table too early. Åberg had a swingy day, and saw it end with an ill-timed shove with ace-jack suited. The big blind woke up with ace-king and ended Åberg's aspiration of turning pro.

The story of the day was Sam "strippin" Thorne. If you go searching for his HendonMob or online screenname on Unibet, you won't find one. Thorne had never played poker before but was here on an invitation from Unibet because he's quite the popular guy on Twitch, YouTube and Twitter. With hundred of thousands of followers he was the perfect guy to get a new chunk of people interested in poker, and it all worked out perfectly.

He learned poker a day before, played his heart out, and did surprisingly well. He got lucky in the last hand of the day to stay alive, but that could've happen to anyone holding ace-king up against aces. Thorne brought thousands of viewers to the Unibet Open live stream and hundreds of comments to the chat box on the Twitch channel. Thorne will return on Day 2 with 97,500.

The first hurdle to take will be reaching the money on Saturday. With 137 players left and 45 players getting paid, there's quite some work to be done before the organization is going to hand out checks. After the bubble bursts, the quest for the final table will take place. Of course PokerNews.com will be on hand to capture all the action, so please check back then.

Quentin Lecomte Runs Top Two into a Set

Level 10 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Quentin Lecomte
Quentin Lecomte

Unibet Pro Quentin Lecomte came walking to the rail, exactly where we were standing. It wasn't like we were waiting for him, but now we did run into him like that, we asked what had happened.

Lecomte told us that the player under the gun had limped. Lecomte had raised to 4,000 and the limper made the call. The limper check called a bet of 3,500 on {Q-}{5-}{2-} rainbow and checked again on the {A-} turn. Lecomte, having made top two with his {A-}{Q-}, bet another 7,000 on the turn. The under the gun player check raised to 17,000 and Lecomte made the call.

The river was a {7-} and Lecomte's opponent shoved all in for 30,000 effectively. The Frenchman made the call for his tournament life but would soon muck as he was shown {5-}{5-} for a flopped set.

No More Aberg

Level 10 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Rikard Aberg
Rikard Aberg

Rikard Aberg walked into the media room. He did that more than once already today, as he's a journalist combining work and play here in Copenhagen, but none of the other times had he such a sad face.

We knew soon enough what was going on; Aberg had been eliminated.

Rikard told us he had shoved his remaining 15,000 in with {A-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}. Action folded to the big blind who said he would probably fold. "Really nice guy" said Aberg, but the man was not so nice that he would fold {A-}{K-}.

With ace jack suited up against ace king, Aberg had some work to do. The king high flop was about as bad as they could come. Besides a back door flush and straight draw, not much hope for the Swedish poker and reporting veteran.

Blanks on turn and river made for Aberg to get up from the table and leave. Aberg just missed making Day 2 by one level.

Rasmussen Check Calls Himself Into Trouble

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Reino Rasmussen
Reino Rasmussen

A late position player opened and Reino Rasmussen made the call from the small blind. Bogdan Petrascu over called from the big blind and the three of them saw a flop: {8-Spades}{9-Hearts}{7-Clubs}.

Rasmussen checked and Petrascu lead out for 3,700. The initial raiser folded, Rasmussen made the call.

On the {8-Hearts} turn Rasmussen check called another 11,500 and the {8-Clubs} fell on the river. Rasmussen checked a third time, but folded to the 16,000 bet his neighbor made.

Lost One Champ, Found Another

Level 7 : 400/800, 100 ante
Frederik Jensen
Frederik Jensen

We just lost Frederik Brink Jensen who won this event here last year.

His former table mate Rikard Aberg told us he first lost a big hand where he bet 10,000 on a board of {J-}{10-}{7-}{9-}{7-}. His opponent put Jensen all in and the Dane decided to fold and continue with the 16,000 he still had in front of him. Jensen showed an {8-} and so folded a straight, his opponent showed {Q-}{7-} and got away with it.

After some more smaller pots Jensen was down to 8,000. The former champ shoved all in from middle position and the big blind made the call. Jensen had {6-}{6-} but would found no help against the big blinds' {10-}{10-}.

Frederik Jensen departed, but at the same time we found the other former Unibet Open Copenhagen champ. Kassem Yassine sits on table 9 seat 5 and plays around 25,000 at the moment.

Aberg Cracks Aces

Level 5 : 200/400, 75 ante
Rikard Aberg
Rikard Aberg

In the last hand before the break, Rikard Aberg almost doubled up.

He opened with {J-Hearts}{10-Hearts} from middle position and the player on the button made the call. The big blind squeezed to 1,900 and Aberg and the button made the call.

{5-Hearts}{K-Hearts}{J-Clubs} on the flop and the big blind bet 2,300. Aberg made the call, the button folded. The turn was the {K-Spades} and the big blind now bet 5,100. Aberg again called and spiked the {Q-Hearts} on the river.

The big blind checked and Aberg bet 6,600. Well into the break now, the big blind thought for several minutes before calling. Aberg showed {J-Hearts}{10-Hearts} and took it down, the big blind said he had aces.

At noon Day 1b of the Unibet Open Copenhagen will start with a fresh new batch of players. Day 1b was already sold out yesterday, but the casino might add some extra tables to accommodate some late comers. Yesterday saw 167 players register on Day 1a, today should see more than 200 players start.

The plan for the day is to again play 10 one-hour levels. 15-minute breaks will be after level 2, 4 and 8. A sixty-minute dinner break is scheduled after level 6.

Players receive a 30,000 starting stack, translating to 300 big blinds with the first level being 50/100. Antes kick in in the third level; 100/200 with 25 ante.

PokerNews will be on sight the entire day for updates of all the big pots (and big suck outs). A live streamed feature table starts at 2 p.m. local time. See you in 90 minutes!
