Day 1b of the 2015 Unibet Open Glasgow Main Event was completed on Sunday and it was another day of superb poker action inside Celtic Park football stadium. By the time late registration closed at the end of the fourth 60-minute level, 115 entries had been taken, meaning the total attendance over the two starting flights stands at 221.
While Day 1a was all about Daniel Chutrov’s one-man wrecking spree, one that resulted in him bagging up an unbelievable 539,500 chips at the end of nine levels, Day 1b was more of a slow burner, although there was one monster-sized stack to count at the close of play, that of Wenbin Chen.
Chen finished the night with an impressive stack of 370,000 and goes into Monday’s Day 2 in second place overall. By his own admission, Chen ran extremely well and was picking up more than his fair share of premium hands throughout proceedings. Only time will tell if he can keep stacking chips and if Lady Luck stops shining down on him.
The second and final starting flight attracted some of poker’s more established players including the United Kingdom’s John Eames, the Netherlands’ former European Poker Tour Grand Final champion Pieter de Korver, Scottish online grinder Paul McTaggart and Denmark’s Morten Mortensen. Of that quartet of names, only McTaggart and Mortensen progressed to Day 2 and they’re armed with 35,500 and 39,800 chips respectively.
Whoever wins the £800+£80 buy-in Main Event walks away with a cool £43,000 for their efforts, a nice return on investment we’re sure that you’ll agree. A min-cash is worth £1,700 and the tournament will definitely be awarding its prize money before play ends on Day 2.
Day 2 kicks off at 11:00 a.m. local time on Monday morning and a decision will be made during the tournament as to how many levels are played. There was talk earlier of playing down to the final table, but this is yet to be confirmed. Rest assured, as soon as the information because official we’ll relay it you you delightful folks at home.
Until then, sleep well and we’ll see you bright and early on Monday morning.
Morten Mortensen oof Denmark raised to 2,600 from early position and was called by three opponents. The first was Juraj Kadlubiak to his immediate left, the next was Paul McTaggart on the button and the third was Jorma Vouksenmaa in the small blind.
Vouksenmaa and Mortensen checked the flop, Kadlubik tried his luck with a 6,100 bet and only Mortensen called. Both active players checked the arrival of the turn, leading the dealer to place the onto the board as the final community card.
Mortensen riffled chips for the best part of 30-seconds before betting 10,200 — leaving himself around 6,000 chips behind.
"Call," said Kadubik confidently but that confidence was soon shot down when he saw the in front of Mortensen.
Sunday is the day of rest for many people in this world, but not if you're a poker player in Scotland because today is the day you can begin your quest for some Unibet Open Glasgow glory. At 12:00 noon BST Day 1b of the €1,100 (£800+£80) buy-in Main Event commences and should see a bumper crowd descend on the home of Scottish football giants Celtic F.C.
Celtic Park is more accustomed to housing upwards of 60,000 green-and-white hooped shirt sporting fans who loyally cheer on their beloved teams, but for the next few days the only action it sees is that of triple barrel bluffs, audacious calls and disciplined folds.
Whoever competes today is going to have their work cut out if they are to accumulate anywhere near the number of chips that the Day 1a chip leader did over the course of nine 60-minute levels. Daniel Chutrov of Bulgaria started with 30,000 chips like everyone else in the field, yet he somehow ended the night with the welcomed problem of having to cram 539,500 chips into his overnight chip bag.
To put his achievement into perspective, the closest anyone got to him in terms of chips was Katja Svendsen who finished Day 1a with 169,000 betting tokens in her stack!
