David Shallow Wins Unibet Open London Main Event For £62,000

Level 26 : 40,000/80,000, 10,000 ante
David Shallow
David Shallow

After approximately six hours of play on the final table, the United Kingdom's David Shallow emerged as the winner of the Unibet Open London Main Event for £62,000 and the coveted trophy. Shallow now exceeds the half-million mark in career live tournament earnings after the victory.

The Main Event victory marks the third-biggest win for Shallow in his poker career, as he previous won the World Poker Tour Dublin Main Event for €222,280 in January 2012 and shipped the UKIPT Nottingham High Roller in May 2014 for £68,000.

The day began with eight of the nine players in their seats, and Shallow joined a few hands late. Not too far into the day, the man holding the shortest stack starting today's action, China's Jin Hui, was eliminated in ninth place for £6,300. Hui's top pair on the turn with the {j-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} proved no match for Bhavin Khatri's flopped set of eights.

Play continued for over two hours before the next player was eliminated. France's Nicolas Ludwicki hit the rail after falling short on chips a few hands earlier. Then, Shallow went from being a short stack to no longer "shallow" in chips when his preflop all-in shove for 850,000 with the {A-Hearts}{10-Hearts} — at blinds of 25,000/50,000 and an ante of 5,000 — flushed the board against Khatri's {J-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}.

Shortly after, Hungary's Akos Gergely (7th - £10,540), France's Benjamin Lebor (6th - £12,670), and Hungary's Mate Mecs (5th - £15,770) exited the tournament in very quick succession.

France's Julien Rouxel, who began the day as chip leader, was the next player eliminated in fourth place for £21,005 at the hands of fellow countryman Nicolas Cardyn. While it was Cardyn who finished him off, Rouxel was already short after losing a big hand against Khatri, in which Khatri flopped a set with the {5-Hearts}{5-Spades} on a {j-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{2-Spades} board. Rouxel had the {A-Clubs}{6-Clubs} and took the lead with the nut flush on the {3-Clubs} turn. But, the final blow was delivered to Rouxel when the {3-Spades} paired the board on the river to give Khatri a full house.

Not too long after that, the tournament was heads up after Cardyn lost a key hand. He went all in preflop with the {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds} and lost to Shallow's {A-Clubs}{8-Clubs} after the {8-Diamonds} appeared on the flop. Cardyn collected £28,190 for his third-place finish.

Khatri began heads-up play with 7.155 million in chips and a small lead against Shallow's 5.485 million. Khatri's advantage became slightly greater during the beginning of heads-up play thanks to taking down a few small pots in a row, but eventually Shallow turned the tables with a couple of big pots.

During the final hand, Khatri raised the action to 240,000 with the {a-Spades}{3-Spades}. Shallow three-bet to 665,000 with the {k-Hearts}{q-Spades}, and Khatri called. Shallow then led out for a bet of 740,000 with two pair on a flop of {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}. Khatri then went all in for 3.3 million holding just top pair, and Shallow promptly called. The {4-Diamonds} on the turn and the {10-Hearts} on the river didn't improve Khatri's hand, eliminating him in second place for £42,500.

Khatri shared with PokerNews that he qualified into the Unibet Open London Main Event for around £100.

Bhavin Khatri folded from under the gun. David Shallow raised to 225,000 with {a-Clubs}{8-Clubs} from the small blind. Nicolas Cardyn woke up with {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds} in the big blind and went into the tank before three-betting the action to 490,000 chips.

Shallow declares himself all-in for 3.1 million and Cardyn calls for his remaining 2.4 million in chips.

Cardyn turned from favorite to underdog when the {8-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} flop gave Shallow a pair. The French poker player was unable to catch back up when the board completed with the {10-Clubs}{3-Spades}.

Nicolas Cardyn collected £28,190 for his third place finish and setting up a British heads-up battle between Bhavin Khatri and David Shallow.

Julien Rouxel came into today's action as the final table chip leader. However, he will have to settle fourth place after this hand unfolded.

Rouxel shoved all-in for 770,000 chips from under the gun with {J-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}. The action folded to Nicolas Cardyn in the small blind who isolation-shoved his 1.6 million stack with {a-Spades}{q-Clubs} and Khatri folded.

The {A-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} flop created some hope for Rouxel, as he had a flush draw, despite this also giving Cardyn top-pair. However, Rouxel's day ended with him being eliminated in fourth place for £21,005 after the board completed with the {8-Hearts} on the turn and the {10-Spades} on the river.

Bhavin Khatri opens to 125,000 with {K-Clubs}{K-Diamonds} from under the gun. Mate Mecs raises all in for 320,000 chips from cut-off with {K-Spades}{J-Spades}.

David Shallow tries to isolate the action with {8-Clubs}{8-Spades} by four-betting to 510,000 from the small blind and then gets out of the way when Khatri five-bets to 1.4 million.

Mecs was almost drawing dead after the flop came out {3-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}{6-Clubs}. His hopes of surviving temporarily increased when the {J-Clubs} appeared on the turn, however, he hit the showered eliminated in fifth place for £15,770 after the {5-Diamonds} completed the board.

Shortly after doubling up, Benjamin Lebor open-shoved all-in for 850,000 from the hijack with {A-Hearts}{8-Clubs}. Bhavin Khatri with {A-Diamonds}{A-Clubs} tanked for a minute before calling with players in the blinds quickly folding.

Lebor, feeling he was maybe being slow-rolled stated to the table, "Well that took a long time." David Shallow pointed out it wasn't a slowroll saying, "He had to think about action from the blinds." Khatri confirms that was the case stating, "If it was heads-up, I would snap call."

The board ran out {j-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{q-Diamonds} sealing Lebor's fate for the day and shipping a sizable 1,850,000 chip pot to Khatri. Lebor shakes the hands of his opponents after being eliminated in sixth place for £12,670.

Akos Gergely Eliminated in Seventh Place (£10,540)

Level 24 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Akos Gergely
Akos Gergely

Shortly after Khatri losing with pocket jacks, he found himself holding another premium hand. The action began with Julien Rouxel min-raising from early position with {A-Hearts}{J-Diamonds} to 100,000. Akos Gergely three-bet from the button to 255,000 holding {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs}.

Bhavin from the big blind opted to four-bet shove to 1.8 million with {q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds} and Akos Gergely called for his remaining stack of around 1.1 million.

Bhavin, who was hitting sets with under-pairs yesterday in Day 2, including in a critical spot on the bubble, does it once again by flopping the world when the dealer turned over {J-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{q-Spades}. Gergely was unable to comeback when the {J-Spades} appeared on the turn followed by the {4-Clubs} on the river.

Gergely collects £10,540 for finishing in seventh place with all remaining players now guaranteed a payout of at least £12,670.

Nicolas Ludwicki Eliminated in Eighth Place (£8,400)

Level 24 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Nicolas Ludwicki

Akos Gergely wanted to raise from mid-position with {a-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}, but because he only tossed one chip into the pot it was a call. This may have led to an earlier end to the day of Nicolas Ludwicki. Julien Rouxel called from the small blind with {q-Clubs}{j-Hearts} while Ludwicki checked the action to the flop from the big blind with {10-Spades}{2-Hearts}.

Flop: {J-Clubs}{5-Spades}{2-Diamonds}

Rouxel opted to check the flop with top pair. Ludwicki quickly declared himself all-in for 240,000 chips with bottom pair. After Gregely folded and Rouxel called, things looked brighter for Ludwicki as he turned two-pair when the {10-Clubs} appeared. However, Ludwicki's two-pair became counterfeited after the {5-Clubs} spiked the river giving Rouxel a better two-pair.

Ludwicki collected £8,400 for his eighth place finish and all the remaining players are now guaranteed a five-payout with the next spot paying £10,540.

Jin Hui
Jin Hui

Bhavin Khatri opens the action for 62,000. The action folds around to the short-stacked Jin Hui who calls from the big blind.

Both players opt to check on a flop of {6-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{8-Hearts}. Action picked up when the {J-Hearts} hit the turn with Khatri leading out for 76,000. Hui thinks for a minute before declaring himself all-in for his remaining 282,000 chips. Khatri quickly calls and the players turn over their cards.

Hui: {J-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}
Khatri: {8-Diamonds}{8-Spades}

Khatri's set is no match for Hui who is drawing dead after getting all his chips in the middle. The board completes with a {J-Spades}. While this gives Hui a set of trips, he is well over-matched by Khatri's boat.

Hui collects £6,300 for his 9th place finish. The remaining eight players are now all guaranteed a payout of £8,400.
