Christopher Yong Leads Last Nine Into Final Day of the 2018 Unibet Open London Main Event

Level 21 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Christopher Yong

The unofficial nine-handed final table of the 2018 Unibet Open London £990 Main Event is set and Christopher Yong leads the last nine at the Grosvenor Victoria Casino in the heart of the city. It took just under ten full levels of 60 minutes each to determine the finalists after 88 hopefuls out of the 349-entry strong field had returned to the tables of "The Vic", and all hopefuls have at least £6,300 locked up for their efforts.

Yong holds a commanding lead with almost two times as many chips as his nearest follower after bagging up 2,378,000. Second in chips is Oliver White with 1,325,000 followed by Jussi Vanhanen with 1,217,000. Another four of the finalists will return with more than one million in chips: Honglin Jiang (1,204,000), Jonathan Schuman (1,130,000), serial WPT National champion Laurent Polito (1,087,000) and Andreas Wiborg (1,066,000). Last but not least, the two Frenchmen Thomas Cazayous (735,000) and Tony Blanchandin (337,000) round up the line up for tomorrow.

The action will recommence at approximately 12 p.m. local time on Sunday February 25th 2018 with 17:18 left in level 21 at blinds of 12,000/24,000 with a running ante of 4,000. As usual, the Unibet Poker Twitch channel will provide the live stream on a security delay of 30 minutes with hole cards displayed.

After more than 30 players had been eliminated in the opening two levels of the day, the money bubble burst in the third level. It was Daniel Clark that lost a flip with ace-queen against the pocket tens of Thomas Cazayous to become the last player to leave empty-handed. Prior to that, such big names as £2,200 High Roller champion Julien Sitbon, Sylvain Loosli, two time Unibet Open champion Mateusz Moolhuizen, Unibet Poker ambassador Espen Uhlen Jorstad and eSports Star Philip "syrinxx" Schoenebaum were already gone.

Among those to bust in the money on Day 2 were 2015 Unibet Open Cannes runner-up Karl Stark (41st for £1,870), Gary Fisher (34th for £2,100), Monica Vaka (30th for £2,350), Yngve Steen (25th for £2,630), 2017 Unibet Open Bucharest champion Marius Pertea (24th for £2,630), Preben Stokkan (19th for £3,300), Nicolas Cardyn (18th for £3,300), Bhavin Khatri (14th for £4,140) and Clement Tripodi (12th for £4,760).

Pertea was the last former champion in the field and was ousted immediately after the field had redrawn to the last three tables. The Romanian failed to get there with ace-ten suited against the pocket jacks of Lorenc Boci. A big three-way clash on the feature table saw the hopes an even deeper run of Gunnar Wedde and Jeremy Pantin vanish, while Oliver White went from almost zero to hero with a double up and near triple up within a few minutes. Boci then clashed with Christopher Yong and his turned top two pair ended up second-best, as the very same card gave Yong the nut straight. Boci never recovered from that and busted soon after.

Another big story was the impressive performance of Khatri, who had reached the final table of this very event in the last two years. The businessman from the UK all but made it three in a row and fell agonizingly close with his bid after departing in 14th place. A crucial hand saw him lose all but a few chips when three-bet shoving with queen-nine suited into the pocket kings of Nicolaj Bonnichsen. It would then be the elimination of the Dane that ended the day. On the outer table, Bonnichsen limp-shoved his shorter stack with king-jack and Yong called with ace-queen to remain ahead on a nine-high board.

The PokerNews live reporting team will be back for the big showdown tomorrow and provide all the action until the latest player will join the Unibet Open champion's club in the first stop of season 11.

Nicolaj Bonnichsen Eliminated in 10th Place (£5,480)

The bubble to the unofficial final table burst on the outer table and it was Nicolaj Bonnichsen that ended up as the last casualty of the day.

Bonnichsen limped in and Christopher Yong from one seat over made it 80,000 to go. Once the action was back on Bonnichsen, he three-bet all in for just over 400,000 and Yong snap-called.

Nicolaj Bonnichsen: {K-Spades}{j-Diamonds}
Christopher Yong: {A-Spades}{Q-Clubs}

The board ran out {9-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{7-Hearts} and the ace-queen high was good enough for Yong to rake in the pot. All remaining nine players will now bag up for the night and return at lunch time tomorrow to play down to a winner.

Clement Tripodi Eliminated in 12th Place (£4,760)

Clement Tripodi

Clement Tripodi more than doubled with a full house sixes over sevens and then shoved for his last 116,000 on the outer table. Honglin Jiang called in the big blind and the cards were tabled.

Clement Tripodi: {J-Spades}{10-Clubs}
Honglin Jiang: {Q-Clubs}{6-Spades}

The {K-Hearts}{10-Spades}{6-Hearts} flop gave both players a pair and Tripodi improved to two pair on the {J-Diamonds} turn. A cruel {9-Spades} river restored the preflop order as Jiang made a straight and that sent the Frenchman to the rail in 13th place for £4,760.

Bhavin Khatri Eliminated in 14th Place (£4,140)

Level 20 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Bhavin Khatri
Bhavin Khatri

Nicolaj Bonnichsen raised on the button and Bhavin Khatri moved all in from the big blind, Bonnichsen snap-called with a near identical stack.

Nicolaj Bonnichsen: {K-Clubs}{K-Hearts}
Bhavin Khatri: {Q-Hearts}{9-Hearts}

The {9-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} flop was a massive sweat, but ultimately Khatri had to forfeit 448,000 chips and was left with a mere big blind.

In the very next hand Clement Tripodi raised and Khatri called all in, and Honglin Jiang came along from the big blind. The two remaining active players checked the {A-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} flop and a bet fo 30,000 by Jiang on the {Q-Diamonds} turn forced a fold from Tripodi.

Bhavin Khatri: {Q-Clubs}{8-Clubs}
Honglin Jiang: {A-Spades}{j-Diamonds}

The {3-Hearts} on the river was of no help for Khatri and his bid for a third consecutive final table here in London was denied, he claimed £4,140 for his 14th place finish.

Over on the outer table, Jeremy Pantin moved all in for his last 126,000 and Clement Tripodi called in the cutoff.

Jeremy Pantin: {K-Spades}{j-Clubs}
Clement Tripodi: {A-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}

The {K-Diamonds}{J-Spades}{3-Clubs} flop improved Pantin to two pair, but the {10-Hearts} turn gave Tripodi the nut straight. Only king or jack would keep the hopes of Pantin alive, yet the {Q-Clubs} river was a blank and Pantin was eliminated in 16th place for £3,700.

Wedde Busts in Three-Way Clash

Gunnar Wedde

Oliver White limped the {J-Spades}{9-Diamonds} on the button and Gunnar Wedde did so in the small blind with the {K-Hearts}{8-Clubs}, Jeremy Pantin checked out of the big blind with the {9-Spades}{5-Clubs}. The flop fell {K-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{9-Clubs} and it checked to White, who bet 25,000. Pantin check-raised to 85,000 to see White call and Wedde then moved all in for 231,000. Pantin reshoved and White called.

The {A-Spades} turn and {J-Diamonds} river saw Wedde run out of chips and White almost tripled up in the process, while Pantin was left with very few chips only.

In the cutoff Tony Blanchandin raised to 25,000 and Nicolas Cardyn defended his big blind. On a flop of {9-Hearts}{7-Spades}{4-Diamonds}, Cardyn checked and subsequently check-raised from 20,000 to 56,000, leaving himself 120,000 behind. Blanchandin moved all in and Cardyn called it off.

Nicolas Cardyn: {K-Spades}{9-Clubs}
Tony Blanchandin: {J-Diamonds}{J-Spades}

Cardyn seemed to have accepted his fate, but suddenly jumped into the lead with the {K-Diamonds} turn. The fortune lasted all but a few moments, as the {J-Clubs} river gave Blanchandin a set and Cardyn the exit in 19th place for £3,300.
