The 2018 Unibet Open Malta Main Event Reaches the Money Today

Daniel Jacobsen leads the way on Day 2
Daniel Jacobsen leads the way on Day 2

273 players entered, 82 of them are left standing after Day 1 of the 2018 Unibet Open Malta €1,100 Main Event. At noon local time, they'll return to the tables in the InterContinental hotel in the vibrant city of St. Julians. For 39 of them, there's money up for grabs, and all players are looking for a juicy slice of the €237,700 prize pool. A mincash is worth €1,920, while the winner can look forward to a prize of €60,090 attached to his name.

Leading the field is Denmark's Daniel Jacobsen, who had a strong showing on Day 1b with 321,800. Jacobsen has already distanced himself from the pack, as nearest challenger Jamie Munro (227,220) comes back with almost 100k less. Thomas Eychenne (226,400), Kristof Segers (198,200) and Day 1a chipleader Charly Grenet (197.400) round out the top 5.

Some head-turning names also have a shot to add an Unibet Open title to their resumé, including Jack Sinclair (176,400), Mats Karlsson (150,400), Tomasz Kozub (135,500), 2017 Unibet Open London champion [Removed:158], Toni Ojala (110,600), Karl Stark (107,800), George McDonald (95,500), Johan Guilbert (77,100), Eszter Fabian (64,800) and Erwann Pecheux (34.900).

The Unibet squad has six irons left in the fire: Ian Simpson (135,100), Kevin "Papaplatte" Teller (131,400), Fredrik Bergmann (117,800), Rauno Tahvonen (76,700), Quentin Lecomte (45,000) and Dara O'Kearney (42,600) will try to give the hosting party something extra to celebrate.

The action will recommence at noon local time with level 12 with blinds at 1,200/4,000 and a running ante of 400. A maximum of 11 levels in total are scheduled or reaching to the unofficial final table, whichever of the two comes first. A 15-minute break will be held after every two of the 60-minute levels. The live stream on the Unibet Poker Twitch stream will be broadcasted throughout the day with hole cards on a security delay.

Follow PokerNews throughout the day as we bring you all the latest from Malta as we reach the money stages.

Schonebaum First One Out

Level 11 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante

Phil "syrinxx" Schonebaum is the first player to have busted out of Day 2. The Esporter shoved {A-}{J-} into {K-}{K-} and wasn't able to improve.

At another table, Koen Roos drew first blood from Mats Karlsson. With already up to 60,000 in the pot, Roos bet 25,500 on a {4-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{3-Spades}{3-Diamonds} board and Karlsson gave it up after some thought.

"Papaplatte" Knocks Nardin Out, Simpson Soaring

Level 11 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Kevin "Papaplatte" Teller
Kevin "Papaplatte" Teller

Unibet Esporter Kevin "Papaplatte" Teller had a strong start to the day as he just knocked Romain Nardin of out the tournament. Nardin shoved all in with {3-}{3-} and Teller had an easy call with {A-}{A-}. No surprises brought the German up to 150,000.

Ian Simpson is doing even better and surpassed the 200k mark in the early stages. Simpson raised to 5,300 on the button with {K-Clubs}{10-Hearts} and the big blind called. Both players checked the {A-}{9-}{8-} flop with two clubs.

On the {7-Diamonds} turn, the big blind bet 3,500, Simpson raised to 14,500, the big blind three-bet to 26,000 and the Unibet ambassador called.

The river brought the {6-} and the big blind shoved with {Q-}{9-}. Simpson had an easy call with the rivered straight to eliminate his opponent.

Del Gallo Busts; Aksnes Escapes

Level 11 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante

Jeremy Del Gallo will not be walking away with money today as the Frenchman found his demise at the hands of Martin Wrulich. Del Gallo was all in with {K-Spades}{J-Spades} against {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} but had no change after the turn on a {Q-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{10-Spades}{Q-Hearts}{2-Hearts} board.

Kristian Aksnes was also all in and behind with {7-Diamonds}{5-Hearts} against Dmytro Gukov with {A-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} on an {A-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{9-Spades} flop. Aksnes was all in for his last 28,900 and spiked the {7-Hearts} he needed on the turn. The {6-Spades} river gave him the double-up and left Gukov in shallow water.

Varszegi Falls to Pedersen; Gukov Doubles

Level 12 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante

A short-stacked Tamas Varszegi was all in with his last chips holding {Q-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} against the {6-Diamonds}{6-Clubs} of Are Pedersen. The board came {A-Clubs}{J-Spades}{7-Spades}{J-Clubs}{8-Spades} and Varszegi bowed out early in level 12. Dmytro Gukov was also all in and at risk but doubled up with {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} against the {A-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} of Roberto Morra.

Meanwhile, Ian Simpson kept the pressure on with a four-bet shove after Ivar Aaberg had three-bet to 18,500 on the button. Aaberg folded and Simpson stacked up some more chips.
