Giulio Spampinato Tops Strong Day 1a Turnout of 2022 Unibet Open Malta Main Event

Level 11 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Giulio Spampinato

The return of the Unibet Open brand to the live poker circuit has been a resounding success so far. After a hiatus of more than two and a half years, the popular mid-stakes tour headed to the Mediterranean island of Malta for the fifth time in history and eyeballs a record turnout. The first of three starting days in the 2022 Unibet Open Malta €1,100 Main Event attracted a field of 120 entries of which 33 players advanced to Day 2.

Another two chances remain for poker enthusiasts from near and far to join the action in the five-star Intercontinental Hotel in St. Julians. However, all those who bowed out on Day 1a are only permitted to use their single re-entry in the turbo heat 1c as of 9pm local time on Friday, September 30, 2022.

Leading the way after 11 levels of 60 minutes each is Italy's Giulio Spampinato with a stack of 260,000 and Szymon Bujok (226,500) is the only other player to run up the 30,000 starting stack more than seven-fold. Among the big stacks at the end of the night are also Baard Dahl (163,000), Mark Vella (147,500), former EPT Malta Main Event runner-up Mats Karlsson (142,000) and Domenico Gala (138,000).

Unibet Poker saw three brand ambassadors in the mix but only one of them made it through to bagging and tagging. Alexandre Reard lasted all but ten minutes after he bowed out in a setup hand and then watched his wife Aurelie finish third in the PKO Side Event. Monica Vaka was also unable to advance while David Lappin holds the shortest stack of all survivors with 29,500.

Chip leader Spampinato won the arguably biggest pot of the day in a battle of the blinds in which he knocked out Julius Kettunen when the Finn overplayed trips and could not get away from it. Bujok consistently built his stack and spent the final three levels of the night on the live stream feature table, where he preserved his prime position for Day 2 without any major drama.

Szymon Bujok
Szymon Bujok is second in chips after Day 1a

Among the notable casualties that have one more shot to accumulate chips were online casino games streamer Killian Desnos, two-time Unibet Open champion Mateusz Moolhuizen, Ian Simpson, Malta's very own "poker mama" Jackie Cachia, Pavlos Xanthopoulos, Pierre de Almeida, Janos Kurtosi, Luigi D'Alterio, and WSOP bracelet winner Jonathan Pastore.

Some 80 Unibet Poker online qualifiers and high-volume players have not redeemed their entry for the flagship tournament of the five-day series yet, which points to an even bigger turnout for the second regular starting day as of noon local time.

The record attendance in the four stops of the Unibet Open on Malta so far stands at 327 entries and was set during the last edition back in 2019. However, that number may very well be eclipsed and you can find out if that happens right here on PokerNews. Day 1b commences at 12pm local time and the turbo heat will run concurrently in the late evening before all survivors then combine to a single field the next day.

Roos Eliminated by Dahl in Last Hand

Level 11 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Baard Dahl
Baard Dahl

Koen Roos opened on the button and was called by Baard Dahl in the big blind. On a {q-Spades}{j-Hearts}{5-Clubs} flop, Roos bet and Dahl check-called to then check the {k-Diamonds} on the turn. Roos bet another 11,000 and Dahl then pushed all-in.

Having started the hand with around 60,000, well below the average, Roos called it off as Dehlia de Jong and Mateusz Moolhuizen walked over to the table to see what was happening.

Dahl rolled over the {10-Spades}{9-Hearts} for a straight and Roos sighed "drawing dead", flashed the {k-Spades}{4-Clubs} and was gone by the time the {8-Diamonds} river completed the board.

Back to the Drawing Board for Sandoff

Level 11 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Koen Meutstege
Koen Meutstege

Juho Santala raised to 4,000 in the hijack and Koen Meutstege three-bet jammed for 38,500 from one seat over. Karl Erik Sandoff also moved all-in from the small blind and Santala folded.

Koen Meutstege: {5-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}
Karl Erik Sandoff: {a-Hearts}{q-Clubs}

The pocket pair held despite an additional sweat on the {9-Spades}{9-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{k-Spades}{9-Clubs} board as Sandoff was reduced to fumes once more. "Would you have won?" Meutstege asked Santala, who nodded.

Big Stacks Battle on the Feature Table

Level 10 : Blinds 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante
Domenico Gala
Domenico Gala

Dan Tolppanen was able to increase his stack significantly since moving to the feature table and yet he is one of four players with a large chip tower at their disposal.

Two of them just played out a three-bet pot with Domenico Gala opening to 3,000 and Mats Karlsson three-betting to 14,000. Gala stuck around to the {q-Spades}{7-Spades}{6-Clubs} flop on which he faced a bet worth 15,000 by Karlsson and called. Karlsson bet another 25,000 on the {4-Clubs} turn with his combo-draw and picked up a call by the Italian.

The Malta resident checked the {7-Diamonds} river after which Gala jammed all-in for 62,700.

Karlsson checked his cards again and then folded. Gala had a big grin on the face and other players remarked "it has to be a bluff when you smile that much." The Italian only flashed the nine while Karlsson mentioned he had turned a flush draw and gutshot.

Lappin Leaps Back Above Starting Stack

David Lappin
David Lappin

In a duel big blind versus button, David Lappin got it in for the last 13,400 on the {q-Clubs}{8-Spades}{5-Clubs} flop and Jon Per Persent looked him up.

David Lappin: {10-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}
Jon Per Persent: {k-Clubs}{10-Clubs}

The {3-Diamonds} turn and {a-Diamonds} river kept Lappin in contention while he put a small dent into the big stack of Persent.

Down to Six Tables on Day 1a

Level 9 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Hendrik Van Dam
Hendrik Van Dam

The pace of eliminations has slowed down in the penultimate level and Emmi Juutilainen was the only one to depart on the feature table, which still has Szymon Bujok near the top of the leaderboard.

Monica Vaka was then eliminated on the outer tables and Hendrik Van Dam followed. The cards of the latter were mucked already as Juho Santala was shipped the pot. His {a-Diamonds}{j-Hearts} had failed to connect with the {9-Spades}{6-Hearts}{3-Spades}{4-Clubs}{10-Spades} board but ace-jack high was good enough for the win anyways.

Kettunen Eliminated by Spampinato in Large Pot

Level 8 : Blinds 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Julius Kettunen
Julius Kettunen

A rather innocent looking battle of the blinds commenced with a raise to 3,000 by Giulio Spampinato and Julius Kettunen called to see a flop of {k-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{8-Hearts} on which both players checked.

Spampinato bet the {10-Spades} turn for 2,300 and Kettunen raised to 8,000 in order to pick up a call by the Italian. On the {5-Clubs} river, Spampinato checked and Kettunen now bet 45,000 with fewer than that behind.

Spampinato moved all-in for 91,200 and Kettunen grabbed a single T-1,000 chip, which he then slowly moved between all of his fingers. Eventually, the Finn called and Spampinato tabled the {8-Diamonds}{8-Spades} for eights full of kings, while Kettunen bowed out with {k-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} for trips kings.

Brzezinski Doubles Through Rummukainen

Level 8 : Blinds 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Tomasz Brzezinski
Tomasz Brzezinski

Louis Le Boisselier raised to 2,000 from under the gun and Tomasz Brzezinski three-bet to 5,200 from one seat over. Olli Rummukainen then four-bet to 15,000 on the button, which forced out the initial raiser.

Brzezinski had other plans and five-bet jammed for 34,800, picking up a swift call by Rummukainen.

Tomasz Brzezinski: {q-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}
Olli Rummukainen: {j-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}

The superior pocket pair held on the {10-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{a-Spades}{6-Hearts} board and Rummukainen was left with a short stack.

Kozub Scores a Knockout

Tomasz Kozub
Tomasz Kozub

The cards were already turned over when Ralph Chestersson was all-in and at risk against Tomasz Kozub.

Ralph Chestersson: {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}
Tomasz Kozub: {q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}

The dominated pair also had both suits covered and there was no miracle escape for the Swede on the {j-Spades}{5-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{3-Spades}{k-Hearts} runout.

"Thanks guys," Chestersson said on his way out and then talked through some hands with Kozub shortly thereafter.

Down and Up for Lappin

Level 6 : Blinds 300/600, 600 ante
David Lappin
David Lappin

David Lappin clashed with Esa Valliaro as both checked down the {k-Clubs}{8-Spades}{5-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} river. With some 24,000 in the middle, Valliaro won the pot with {j-Clubs}{j-Spades}.

Soon after, the Finn three-bet small and Lappin stuck around as the initial raiser to see a {9-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} flop go check, check. Valliaro bet the {6-Spades} turn for 3,200 and Lappin came along to then check behind the {j-Diamonds} on the river. Valliaro shrugged before revealing {k-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}, which Lappin had beat with the {2-Hearts}{2-Clubs} for a mighty pair of ducks.
