Mike Gorodinsky Wins US Poker Open Pot-Limit Omaha Title for $179,200

Mike Gorodinsky

This afternoon at the 2018 US Poker Open #02 - Pot-Limit Omaha final table, Mike Gorodinsky put on a performance for the ages. Gorodinsky eliminated all five of his opponents as he steamrolled his way to the title and a top prize of $179,200.

"You feel pretty good about having a mountain of chips," Gorodinsky said after the match. "I was prepared but also feeling pretty good." When asked if his win today was more about the cards he got rather than how he played Gorodinsky's reply was simple; "I feel like I played fine but it's hard to complain when you have a set every hand."

Richard Kirsch, who came into the final table as the chipleader but ultimately was Gorodinsky's last victim had some kind words for the champion. "Mike played really great. He ran good too, and that's, you know, the combination to winning. So hats off to him. He played really great."

Play went on six-handed for the latter part of four levels before Cary Katz put himself at risk against Gorodinsky. Katz got it in on the flop with the best hand but Gorodinsky outdrew him on the turn and sent the Poker Central founder to the rail in sixth place.

Another almost three levels went by before the next casualty succumbed to Gorodinsky. By this time, Gorodinsky was crushing the field having more than two times the amount of chips than his four opponents combined.

After losing a huge cooler to Kirsch, Andjelko Andrejevic was left with crumbs and Gorodinsky was more than happy to sweep them up sending the most experienced live PLO player to the showers.

Coming in as the shortest stack, Anthony Zinno fought hard all day but was never able to get anything going and he too was unable to get the best of Gorodinsky. Just a couple moments later, Rainer Kempe doubled up Kirsch and Gorodinsky swooped in to clean up the mess once again.

"Gordo" held a nine-to-one chip advantage over Kirsch when they got heads up and just a few hands later the two got it in. Kirsch knew he was in trouble right away seeing his draws dominated by his opponent and Gorodinsky was able to seal the deal.

Sunday features a day off from the USPO action while the players enjoy the Super Bowl. The poker picks back up on Monday with the final table of the USPO #03 – $25K NLH event and Day 1 of the $25,000 Mixed Game Championship.

Mike Gorodinsky limped in with the {a-Spades}{10-Clubs}{7-Spades}{7-Hearts} and called a pot bet from Richard Kirsch holding the {a-Clubs}{k-Spades}{6-Spades}{4-Clubs}.

As soon as the {5-Hearts}{10-Spades}{8-Spades} flop swept out, Kirsch moved all-in and Gorodinsky quickly called.

Gorodinsky was ahead and would stay ahead through the turn and river — {6-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} — improving to a straight and eliminated his final opponent to claim the victory in the second event of the US Poker Open.

Kirsch received $128,000 for his runner-up finish while Gorodinsky banks $179,200 for the win.

Rainer Kempe Eliminated in 3rd Place ($83,200)

As Anthony Zinno exited, Rainer Kempe was under the gun (cutoff) and potted to 240,000. Richard Kirsch defended his big blind before shoving his last 205,000 on the {3-Spades}{2-Hearts}{Q-Hearts} flop. Kempe called right away.

Kirsch: {7-Spades}{5-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{3-Hearts}
Kempe: {K-Clubs}{K-Spades}{7-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}

Kirsch had a straight and a flush draw and he connected on the {10-Hearts} turn, leaving Kempe drawing dead. Kempe was crippled to just 45,000 and he wouldn't recover.

His shrapnel went in with {K-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} and both of Kempe's opponents tried to score his knockout. Gorodinsky held {K-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{X-} and Kirsch had {6-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{2-Hearts}.

The {3-Spades}{8-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{8-Spades}{Q-Diamonds} board was checked through and Gorodinsky scooped the pot. Kempe, who entered the day second in chips, converted his field position into a bronze medal worth $83,200.

Mike Gorodinsky bet pot with the {7-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}, making it 240,000 to go and Anthony Zinno called in the big blind holding the {a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{5-Clubs}.

The flop came down {3-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} and Gorodinsky bet pot again and Zinno called to put himself at risk.

Gorodinsky made his straight with the {6-Clubs} on the river leaving Zinno drawing dead and the meaningless {k-Clubs} on the river sealed Zinno's fate.

Zinno takes home $64,000 for his fourth-place effort.

Gorodinsky Running Over the Table

Level 22 : 35,000/70,000, 0 ante
Mike Gorodinsky
Mike Gorodinsky

Mike Gorodinsky has been landsliding this final table so far. He just added a large chunk to his stack after opening the button to 200,000 with {A-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}. Andjelko Andrejevic defended his big blind with {J-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} and they saw the {7-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} hit the felt.

The flop was checked through and they carried on to the {10-Diamonds} turn. Andrejevic had two flush draws and led out 300,000. Gordo had a superior diamond draw along with a gutter and a pair. He called.

The river was the {8-Spades} and Andrejevic fired another 600,000, trying to bluff Gorodinsky off of his hand. Gorodinsky, however, snap-called with his straight and won a significant pot to increase his substantial lead. Andrejevic, meanwhile, dropped below 10 bigs.

Cary Katz Eliminated in 6th Place ($38,400)

Level 20 : 25,000/50,000, 0 ante
Cary Katz
Cary Katz

Mike Gorodinsky limped in on the button with the {j-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} and Cary Katz flatted in the small blind with the {10-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{4-Spades}. Anthony Zinno looked down at the {10-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{2-Clubs} in the big blind and checked his option.

A {9-Clubs}{5-Spades}{4-Hearts} flop fanned out and Katz bet pot worth 150,000. Zinno folded and Gorodinsky raised to put Katz all in and Katz obliged.

The {8-Spades} on the turn gave Gorodinsky a straight and Katz was unable to improve with the {7-Hearts} on the river to bow out sixth place.

Katz earns his second cash of the US Poker Open, this one for $38,400.

Final Six Players to Battle for $10,000 Pot Limit Omaha Title Today at US Poker Open

2018 US Poker Open
2018 US Poker Open

The second US Poker Open final table unfolds Saturday, February 3 at Aria Resort and Casino as the last six players come back for Day 2 of the $10,000 Pot Limit Omaha Event which attracted 64 entries.

It will be a star-studded competition returning at 12:00 P.M. local time to fight for the handsome $179,200 first-place prize. Poker fans around the globe have an opportunity to watch the contest from 1:00 P.M. PST on PokerGO. The broadcast will feature hole cards of all players.

Leading the pack is Richard Kirsch who dominated the stage between the end of late registration and the end of Day 1. It was Kirsch himself who ended the day, knocking out Dan Shak in seventh place in a massive pot with aces against kings. Both players made a straight with their danglers but Kirsch held the superior one. He increased his stack to 2,530,000, bagging a huge lead over his nearest rivals. Kirsch has won $1.8 million in live tournaments through his career. Remarkably, none of his 77 reported results came in PLO.

5Richard KirschUnited States2,530,000101
6Rainer KempeGermany1,440,00058

Kirsch will face off against some of the world's most prolific players such as German high roller Rainer Kempe who boasts nearly $12 million in live cashes. Kempe entered the tournament right in the last minute and he finished with 1,440,000, the second biggest stack among the finalists. Kempe will be sitting directly to the left of Kirsch, which might bring some interesting dynamics to the play on the final table.

Andjelko Andrejevic's path to the final table was almost identical as he also checked in with the 125,000 starting stack at the end of the late reg. He made the final table with 1,405,000, trailing Kempe by less than two big blinds.

The final table will also feature Mike Gorodinsky, one of the most accomplished mixed games players on the planet. Gorodinsky is a former WSOP Poker Players Championship winner and 2015 WSOP Player of the Year. "Gordo" will have a plenty of room to utilize his strengths as he returns to 1,275,000 (51 big blinds).

Poker Central founder Cary Katz is also in contention, sitting in fifth place with 770,000. Fresh off his triumph in the PCA Super High Roller, Katz has kicked off his US Poker Open campaign with a seventh place in the opening $10,000 No Limit Hold'em event. He will notch his second cash today and a potential victory would move him to the top of the USPO leaderboard.

Short stack Anthony Zinno is the only other player with a two-for-two record at the US Poker Open. He's already min-cashed the Event #1, taking $20,400 for a tenth place finish. Zinno, whose showcase includes a bracelet from the 25,000 Pot Limit Omaha, will enter the PLO finale with 580,000 chips.

The action resumes with seven minutes left to play in level 17 with the blinds of 10,000/25,000. The PokerNews live reporting team will bring you the hand coverage following the PokerGO cards-up broadcast. Come back at 1:00 P.M. PST to find out who will emerge as the US Poker Open Pot Limit Omaha champion.
