Nick Schulman is a frequent commentator on PokerGO, but on Thursday night he was on the other side of the lens competing in the 2019 U.S. Poker Open Event #8: $25,000 8-Game Mix Championship. The tournament attracted 20 entries including some of the world’s best mixed-game specialist.

When it comes to mixed games, Schulman not only competes against the best but more than holds his own as evidenced by capturing his first USPO title, good for $270,000.

"It feels damn good," Schulman told USPO officials after the win. "There's nothing like winning a tournament, regardless of the field size. It feels great and getting a clear first is exciting."

Schulman now sits in third place in the overall 2019 USPO overall championship and is within striking distance of both Sean Winter and Stephen Chidwick.

Schulman, a two-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner in the $10,000 No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Championship, previously finished fifth in the 2019 USPO Event #7: $25,000 NLH for $120,000.

"I'm wound up for the $50k and $100k, those events speak for themselves," he added. "We'll see how this $50k goes and then we'll see if I'll play the $100k. You gotta be pumped up to play with these wizards."

Final Table Action

The final four players returned to action on the money bubble, meaning one of them would leave empty handed while the other three would be guaranteed an $80,000 minimum payday. As the chip leader Brandon Adams was seemingly safe, as was Schulman second in chips with more than twice as much as the short-stacked Randy Ohel and Chris Vitch.

Ultimately it was Ohel who fell in fourth place in a round of Stud 8. He committed with a small pair and failed to get there against Schulman, who had to small pair. Not long after, Adams took care of Vitch in a round of 2-7 Triple Draw. Vitch made a {9-}{8-}{7-}{5-}{3-} low but Adams had just enough to beat him with {9-}{7-}{6-}{3-}{2-}. Vitch took home $80,000 for his third-place finish.

Heads-up play began relatively even and the duo would swap the lead on a few occasions. Things swung in Schulman’s favor when Adams overbet bluffed the turn in a round of no-limit hold’em. Schulman had both a flush and open-ended straight draw and check-jammed, which prompted Adams to fold.

From there, Schulman whittled away at Adams’ stack before the latter had to take a stand in limit hold’em with nine-deuce. He was up against king-ten and failed to improve sending him out the door in second place for $150,000.

Limit Hold'em:

Brandon Adams was down to 105,000 when he raised to 100,000 from the button. Nick Schulman raised and Adams called off his last 5K chip.

Adams: {9-Diamonds}{2-Spades}
Schulman: {k-Hearts}{10-Clubs}

Adams was behind and looking for some help, but it didn't come as the board ran out a dry {4-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{j-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{7-Hearts}.

Chris Vitch Eliminated in 3rd Place ($80,000)

Level 18 : 15,000/30,000, 30,000 ante
Chris Vitch - 3rd Place
Chris Vitch - 3rd Place

2-7 Triple Draw:

The short-stacked Chris Vitch was on the button and raised to 80,000, which Brandon Adams called from the big.

Adams drew two and Vitch one. Adams then check-called a 40,000 bet and drew one while Vitch stood pat.

Adams checked for the second time and Vitch bet 80,000, leaving himself just 15,000 behind. Adams check-raised and Vitch called off. Adams then stood pat.

"Well, I've got a problem," said Vitch. He took his time before ultimately staying pat with {9-}{8-}{7-}{5-}{3-}. Unfortunately for him, it was no good as Adams held {9-}{7-}{6-}{3-}{2-}.

The final two are now on a short break as the tournament staff prepares for heads-up play.

Randy Ohel Bubbles Event #8: $25K 8-Game Mix

Level 17
Randy Ohel

Stud 8:

Brandon Adams: {8-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} /{5-Spades}{4-Spades}{10-Hearts} fold
Randy Ohel: {6-Spades}{6-Clubs} / {a-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{3-Clubs} / {2-Spades}
Nick Schulman: {7-Clubs}{5-Hearts} / {4-Clubs}{7-Spades}{5-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} / {8-Hearts}

Picking up the action on fourth street, Nick Schulman bet 30,000 and Randy Ohel burned a time extension before opting to raise to 60,000, which left him just 1,000 back. Both Adams and Schulman called, and then the former folded to a 60,000 bet from the latter on fifth street.

The hands were turned up and Ohel was looking to improve. He failed to do so on sixth, and Schulman was kind enough to show him seventh straight away to see if he was even drawing live. Ohel was but failed to get there as he peeled a useless deuce.

With that, Ohel leaves empty handed while the other three players are now in the money.
