Keith Carter Leads Day 1b Field Narrowly Over Kevin Eyster

Level 19 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante

On Saturday, the WinStar World Casino and Resort in Thackersville, Oklahoma, saw Day 1b of the River Poker Series Main Event take place with a total of 455 entrants putting up the $2,500 entry fee. By the time play concluded, only 46 would survive to return for Day 2 on Monday. When all was said and done, it was Keith Carter who led the Day 1b contingent with 835,000 in chips.

After the first two flights, there were a total of 821 entrants with 83 moving on — and already in the money. They will be joined by those who make it through on Sunday's Day 1c.

Carter would move into the chip lead near the end of the night when he took out another big stack by flopping a set of nines. He would hold onto that lead through the end of the night, just edging out Kevin Eyster, who finished with 819,000.

Eyster won a massive pot at the end of the night when he tangled with WSOP bracelet winner Bryan Campanello. The latter would call Eyster's all-in bet on the {10-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{K-Diamonds} board with {Q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} and would be disappointed and crippled when Eyster showed him the {A-Spades}{A-Clubs}. The river was the {K-Clubs} to send Eyster the huge pot.

Rounding out the top five were Chris Neal (498,000), Webber Kang (475,500), and Jence Kelling (462,500).

Others to make it through included Kevin Posey (434,000), Nate Kogel (296,000), Andy Philachack (215,000), La Sengphet (88,000), and Seneca Easley (59,000). Despite the misstep against Eyster, Campanello bagged up 93,500.

There were plenty that would come out to take their shot and come up short including Chris Tryba, TJ Cloutier, Ari Engel, Allen Kessler, Brandon Steven, Rex Clinkscales, Kyle Bowker, Tom Marchese, and Jordan Morgan. Fortunately for that group they will have one more shot tomorrow on Day 1c.

WinStar poker ambassador Maria Ho lost a key pot to Philachack during Level 14 with the blinds at 1,200/2,400/400 that saw her knocked just below 50,000 in chips. Shortly thereafter, the last of her chips went in when she picked up pocket queens, but unfortunately ran into an opponent's pocket kings.

Play for Day 1c will get underway Sunday at 12 p.m. local time. Players should expect a long day of poker as the field will once again be whittled down to the top 10%. PokerNews will be on hand with all of the latest updates from the tournament floor, so make sure to tune in for all the exciting coverage.

Eyster Doubles Through Campanello; Takes Chip Lead

Level 19 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Kevin Eyster - Your New Chip Leader
Kevin Eyster - Your New Chip Leader

Kevin Eyster raised to 16,000 from the hijack only to have Bryan Campanello make it 40,000 to go from the cutoff. Action folded back around to Eyster and he slid out a four-bet to 88,000. Campanello flatted to see a flop.

The dealer spread {10-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{6-Clubs} on the felt and Eyster continued out for 77,000. Campanello called, prompting the rail to inch closer to the table in an attempt to view the growing action. The {K-Diamonds} hit the table on the turn and Eyster immediately moved all in for just over 230,000. Campanello went into the tank.

Right around three minutes passed while Campanello pondered his action. Ultimately, he plopped forward calling chips and the hands were turned on their backs.

Campanello: {Q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}
Eyster: {A-Spades}{A-Clubs}

Eyster was in the lead with his aces over Campanello's pair of tens. The {K-Clubs} finished off the board and Eyster scooped a massive pot to propel him into the chip lead. Eyster now has about 825,000 in chips. Campanello, on the other hand, has been reduced to just around 90,000.

Maria Ho, More Than Just a Poker Player

Level 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Maria Ho
Maria Ho

Earlier today, David "ODB" Baker sent out the following tweet:

David Baker1 big reason The River is growing despite heavy competition is @MariaHo she is a great ambassador for @WinStarWorld and reason many are here

Truer words have never been spoken as Ho has been passionate in her support of the WinStar River Poker Series and the number of big names in the poker world that have flocked here is clearly impacted by her role as the ambassador for the tournament. PokerNews sat down with Ho over the most recent break to ask her a few questions.

PN: Can you tell us a little bit about your relationship with Winstar? How did it start and how did it get to where it is today?

Maria Ho: It was about five years ago and I was researching tournaments to play and I saw one here with a good guarantee and decided to come out here on my own. I made the trip and found this hidden gem of a tournament. I got to talking with the poker room manager, played the tournament, and after the series was over we continued talking about the potential of being an ambassador and they eventually brought me on.

PN: Poker players think you do a great job and are a key component to the success this tournament has. What about your role as ambassador here is important to you?

Maria Ho: People don't know what a great value this tournament is and I want to spread the word around. I try to my best at representing poker in a good way and I take that responsibility very serious. I wouldn't tell players to come here if I didn't think it was a good value for them. I want poker to continue to do well and thrive and will do everything I can to help make that happen.

PN: What would you say is your greatest poker accomplishment?

Maria Ho: My consistency. I've been able to play for ten years without going broke. I'm still looking for that big marquee win but my game continually evolves and I'm able to adapt as the game adapts.

PN: What would you say is your greatest life accomplishment?

Maria Ho: Being able to provide for my family and friends and work with charities that I believe in. It's good to be able to use some of my success to help others.

PN: When I first interviewed you over five years ago, you said your family didn't like you playing poker. Has that changed since then?

Maria Ho: *laughs* No, no, not really. They are very traditional and still don't like it but they know I've been able to do good with it so that helps some.

PN: Where do you see yourself going from here?

Maria Ho: I'm going to continue playing and want to continue doing other things that are related to poker like my being an ambassador here and being a commentator for the Heartland Poker Tour. I'm open to anything related to poker.

PN: Who are your favorite players to play with?

Maria Ho: Daniel Negreanu for one. He's so fun. I was playing at a table at the World Series of Poker this summer and the table had been quiet for the last two hours... not a word had been said. Daniel moved to our table and he had everyone talking within two minutes.

Also Phil Ivey. I like watching how people play against him. It's fascinating.

PN: Who are your least favorite players to play with?

Maria Ho *laughs again* Basically anyone that is young, looks like they play a lot online, and is aggressive.

PN: Where do you see poker going from here? Is there still room for growth?

Maria Ho: I think there is, especially if poker slowly makes it way back into the United States. It might decline for a little until that happens but I don't think poker has reached it's ceiling.
