Coleman Goes into Hyperdrive on Bubble to Bag Huge Day 1a Lead

Level 16 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Maxx Coleman
Maxx Coleman

By now, it's a well-known truism that players with big stacks should increase their aggression on the bubble of a tournament.

That's certainly a philosophy that Maxx Coleman appears to abide by. Coleman turned his aggression dial to the max on the bubble of Day 1a of WinStar River Poker Series $2,500 Main Event, raising and shoving relentless to pound his opponents into submission until he was winning nearly every pot.

That strategy proved fruitful despite one major hiccup, as Coleman lapped the field and bagged 835,500 when the day wrapped up around 2 a.m. local time. Coleman has been on a rampage in this event the past two years, winning in 2015 for $750,000 as part of a three-way chop and then coming in 32nd in 2016 as an encore.

Day 1a, the first of three starting days that all feature unlimited reentry, drew 219 entries. Overall, 27 of them survived as the competitors played down to 12 percent of the field.

WinStar Ambassador Maria Ho, two-time WPT champs Aaron Mermelstein and Sam Panzica, and notable runners like Bryan Campanello, Dan Lowery, Will Berry, Brandon Steven, Keith Lehr and Chris Moneymaker were among the players taking at least one shot and bricking Day 1a.

Already stacking piles in the latter stages as the bubble approached, Coleman found himself with pocket kings on a seven-high flop against an opponent who wouldn't fold jacks. That boosted the former champ past the 100 big blind mark, and he kept climbing despite running into Orlando Romero's aces for a decent chunk at one point.

Coleman didn't let that slow him down, and he gambled it up in a big pot with pocket fives on the stone bubble against Matthew Lapossie, who spent the early stages as the chip leader. Lapossie turned over ace-king and found no help on the board despite flopping a Broadway draw, leaving himself busto on the bubble and Coleman with a mountain of chips that far surpassed second-place Andy Philachack's 510,000.

Others making it through included Romero (246,500), Rex Clinkscales (179,500), Greg Jennings (104,000) and Aaron Massey (78,500). Massey is another former champ, having taken this event down in 2012 for about $650,000.

The players who made it through will have two days off as more starting days remain. Day 1b gets rolling Saturday at noon, so come back to PokerNews for more live updates.

Lapossie Bubbles

Level 16 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Matthew Lapossie
Matthew Lapossie

Matthew Lapossie opened on the button, Maxx Coleman three-bet in the big blind, and Lapossie shoved all his chips in. Coleman put him at risk for about 200,000.

Coleman: {5-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}
Lapossie: {a-Spades}{k-Spades}

The flip was on, and Lapossie flopped more outs as {10-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} hit the felt. Coleman held through the {8-Clubs} turn, and the {2-Diamonds} river was a brick to finish Day 1a with Lapossie out on the bubble.

Stay tuned for full chip counts and a recap.

Coleman Lapping the Field

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 400 ante
Maxx Coleman
Maxx Coleman

With around 70,000 already in the pot, Maxx Coleman bet 45,000 from the small blind on a {7-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{4-Diamonds} flop. His opponent in early position pushed all of his chips in, which looked to be just north of 160,000. Coleman snap-called with {k-Diamonds}{k-Spades} and had his foe drawing thin with {j-Clubs}{j-Hearts}. The thin draw turned into a zero draw on the {k-Hearts} turn and Coleman appears to be lapping the field with the end of Day 1a in sight.

Keeping It 100

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Aaron Massey
Aaron Massey

Aaron Massey opened under the gun to 4,000 and AJ Nimer reraised immediately behind him to 12,500. Massey four-bet to 28,000 and Nimer took a minute to call.

The flop was jack high, {j-Spades}{9-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} and Massey counted down his stack a few times before shoving all in for 46,400. Nimer quickly asked for a count and then took over a minute to fold. He said he folded queens. He turned to Massey and offered him $100 to see pocket kings. Massey double checked the terms of the deal and showed him pocket kings to collect the $100.

"I could have told you he had pocket kings for zero dollars," Rex Clinkscales chimed in.

Maxx Coleman Keeps Calling and Wins

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

The player on the button opened to 2,300 into Maxx Coleman's big blind. He raised to 9,000 and his opponent called.

The flop came {a-Hearts}{q-Spades}{q-Diamonds} and Coleman checked. His opponent bet 4,000 and Coleman called. The turn was the {9-Clubs} and Coleman checked again. His opponent bet 7,000 and Coleman called.

The river was the {3-Clubs} and Coleman checked again. His opponent bet a third time, this time making it 23,000 to go, leaving only about 10,000 behind. Coleman called, seeming a little reluctant and was pleased when his opponent didn't show his hand and waited for Coleman to show him the winner. That he did, turning over {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}.

"I thought you had jacks," his opponent said.

Jim Carroll Picks Andy Philachack To Win Despite Matthew Lapossie's Monster Stack

Level 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
Matthew Lapossie
Matthew Lapossie

Jim Carroll won the 2008 Winstar River Poker Series Main Event for $700,000 and pointed out that he was seated with another former winner, Aaron Massey (2012).

He also said that tablemate Andy Philachack is the 2017 winner, picking him to win the tournament this weekend. Meanwhile, Matthew Lapossie was busy knocking out Bryan Campanello to break 120,000 just entering level six. Campanello has reentered, but busted to Lapossie on his first bullet after he four-bet shoved {k-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}.

Carroll opened the action to 800 and Lapossie three-bet to 2,100. The player to Lapossie's left called and Campanello shoved for 12,850. Carroll folded and Lapossie called after getting a count. The player to his left folded.

Lapossie was ahead with {a-Spades}{q-Clubs} against the {k-Diamonds}{j-Hearts} of Campanello. Lapossie flopped a queen and won the pot.

The $2 Million Guarantee WinStar River Poker Series Main Event Starts Today

WinStar World Casino
WinStar World Casino

It is time once again for the WinStar River Poker Series. The $2,500 buy-in tournament brings with it a $2 million guarantee. Today is the first of three starting flights. The players will start at noon, each queuing up for their shot at the top prize.

WinStar Ambassador Maria Ho will be in the field and former WSOP Main Event Champion Chris Moneymaker is expected as well. The field will definitely be packed with some of the biggest names in poker, tournament circuit grinders, and plenty of satellite winners. The WinStar Wolrd Casino has been holding satellites leading up to the kickoff day.

Last year, 2016 Main Event runner-up Gordon Vayo took home the title after a five-way deal. It would not be a surprise to see a few of the faces from this year's Main Event Final table in the field this weekend.

This is a multiple reentry tournament and players will start with 25,000 chips. The levels are 40 minutes long and each starting day will play down to 12 percent of the field.

The WinStar River Poker Series has become one of the more intriguing tournaments over the last few years. Originally offering a $1 million dollar first place guarantee, the series now upped the overall guarantee to $2 million. Over the years the field has transitioned from mostly recreational players to a good mix of pros and recreational players.

Follow all the action right here on PokerNews throughout the weekend. Find out who is playing, who is winning, and who will take home the WinStar River Poker Series Main Event Championship.
