Coleman Trying for Second Title in Three Years, Trails Only Jiang With 12 Left

Level 26 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Maxx Coleman
Maxx Coleman

After three Day 1 flights and a 13-hour grind on Day 2, just 11 players stand between Maxx Coleman and a second victory in three years at WinStar River Poker Series $2,500 Main Event.

Back in 2015, Coleman got by far the biggest share of a three-way chop in this event, taking down $750,000, the biggest score of his live tournament career. The Kansas native followed that up with another strong showing in 2016 when he finished 32nd for $7,864.

Now, he finds himself in a great position to truly make it a three-year run for the ages near the Texas-Oklahoma border. Coleman finished Day 2 with a stack of 3,230,000, leaving him in second place after starting the day as chip leader. That represents more than 50 big blinds as the tournament heads to Level 27 (5,000/30,000/60,000).

However, a mountain of a chip stack stands in his way, belonging to Chengce Jiang. Jiang ran white-hot and finished with 6,675,000, more than a quarter of the chips in play.

It seemed every time Jiang got in a big showdown he held two aces. It started early in the day when he three-bet an open and had Charles Bass shove over behind him with king-seven of spades. Jiang snapped it off with aces to begin his climb. He busted a short stack with the blades and had one of the best stacks going into the final 27 redraw, and he found himself with aces again in a fortuitous spot.

This time, he three-bet a late-position open from DJ Alexander and they got stacks in on a ten-high flop, with Alexander revealing two kings for a tough cooler. Nobody even came close to catching Jiang after that monstrous win.

Coleman certainly isn't the only headliner remaining in the event. Anthony Spinella (2,560,000), Johanssy Joseph (1,715,000), two-time bracelet winner Ben Zamani (535,000), and Mike Dentale (475,000) are all still trucking along, though the latter pair are in dire need of an early double when Day 3 gets going.

That happens at noon Tuesday, with the final 12 players taking seats and battling it out for $400,032 in first-place prize money. Make sure you come right back to PokerNews as the field it whittled to a champion.

Daniel Rodriguez shoved all in for 230,000 and Maxx Coleman made it 600,000 to go. Everyone else folded and Rodriguez was heads up with Coleman for his tournament life.

He has {9-Spades}{9-Clubs} against the {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs} of Coleman. The flop was safe, but the turn brought some worries and the river finally put the nail in. Rodriguez would bust when the board finished {10-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{a-Spades}.

DJ Alexander Eliminated in 16th Place ($21,935)

Level 25 : 20,000/40,000, 4,000 ante
DJ Alexander
DJ Alexander

DJ Alexander opened in the cutoff and Chengce Jiang three-bet to 320,000 in the small blind. Alexander peeled to see a {10-Hearts}{9-Spades}{2-Hearts} flop. Jiang fired in a bet of 300,000 and Alexander slid in 680,000 after thinking a bit. Jiang said he was all in and Alexander stuck his last 500,000 or so in there.

Alexander: {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}
Jiang: {a-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}

The {7-Hearts} gave Alexander a fighting chance to survive the cooler with a monster double if he could find another heart on the end, but it was a harmless {8-Spades}.

George Bronstein
George Bronstein

George Bronstein was in a dream spot with pocket aces in early position. He raised and Gary Otake shoved over the top. Lou Barlow then reshoved and Bronstein snap called with the best hand preflop.

He was against Otake's {j-}{j-} and the {a-}{k-} of Barlow. Otake flopped a jack and that was all she wrote for Bronstein and Barlow, who both exited the tournament in 50th (Bronstein) and 51st (Barlow) place.

Following them to the payout desk was Greg Jennings, who finishing in 49th place.

Nipun Java

Jim Carroll opened for 22,000 in middle position and saw huge action behind him. Cory Smith made it 70,000 in the cutoff. Lang Nguyen shoved on the button for about 70,000. Nipun Java looked at his holding in the big blind and let out a chuckle. He assessed the situation and then put in his whole stack, 73,500. Caroll and Nguyen called.

The board ran out {8-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{10-Spades}{10-Clubs} and the two active players checked down. Carroll opened {7-Spades}{7-Clubs} and Smith mucked. Nguyen excitedly showed {6-Diamonds}{6-Clubs} for a boat and Java could only shake his head and show {j-Diamonds}{j-Spades} for the small side pot. Left with just a few thousand, he busted in short order.

Aaron Massey
Aaron Massey

On the first hand of the day, Aaron Massey was in the small blind with a dead big blind, since Patrick Eskandar hadn't arrived yet.

Sam Phillips opened in late position to 13,000 and Massey shoved all in. Phillips got a count and was happy with the rough estimate Massey gave him. Phillips called 71,500.

Massey had {a-Diamonds}{j-Clubs} against the {k-Spades}{9-Spades} of Phillips. The board ran out {6-Spades}{5-Clubs}{3-Spades}{a-Clubs}{9-Hearts} and Massey was able to dodge the flush draw and earn the double up.

It's Time for Day 2 of the WinStar River Poker Series $2 Million Guarantee Main Event

Maxx Coleman Enters Day 2 as Chip Leader
Maxx Coleman Enters Day 2 as Chip Leader

After three starting flights, it's time for Day 2 of the WinStar River Poker Series $2 Million Guarantee Main Event. Maxx Coleman will lead the way with 835,500 atop a field of 113 returning players.

The remaining field is packed with notables and former champs. Jim Carroll (275,000) and Aaron Massey (76,500) join Coleman as players who've won this event before. Grant Hinkle (250,500) chopped this event five ways last year and will be looking for back-to-back final tables.

Former Main Event Champion Chris Moneymaker made it through to Day 2 as well. He bagged 59,000 and is obviously capable of building his stack from this point. WinStar Ambassador Maria Ho looked like she might be on the verge of making a run last night, but eventually busted and didn't bag for Day 2.

The remaining 113 players will restart at 1 p.m. PokerNews will be covering all the action with photos and updates throughout the day.
