Jeff Cormier Wins World Cup of Cards $10K High Roller

Level 20 : 20,000/40,000, 4,000 ante

New Brunswick's Jeff Cormier has claimed the 2017 World Cup of Cards $10,000 6-Max High Roller. Cormier topped a field of 39 entries Thursday evening at Playground Poker Club to capture the Champion's trophy and a top prize of $160,000.

Final Table Results:

PlaceNameCountryPrize (CAD)
1Jeff CormierCanada$160,000
2Jonathan KaramalikisAustrailia$97,000
3David OrmsbyCanada$58,000
4JK KastnerCanada$43,000
5Francois BillardCanada$30,000
6Ari EngelCanada$0

For Cormier, the win marks his largest-ever live-recorded tournament cash and almost doubles his career live recorded earnings which will push over $400,000 when tonight's results get posted. No stranger to deep runs at Playground Poker Club either, this is Cormier's ninth cash at the Kahnawake poker room.

Just 11 players returned for action on Day 2 but with late-registration open until the start of play, the field quickly doubled in size. All in all, there were 39 entries total with 26 unique players and 13 re-entries.

The likes of Pascal Lefrancois, Ami Alibay, Philippe D'Auteuil, Sam Chartier, and 2010 WSOP Main Event Champion Jonathan Duhamel all fired away but missed their mark and busted before the final table got underway.

Once the unofficial final table of seven was set, partypoker Team Pro Kristen Bicknell saw her stack reduced to below 10 big blinds and shoved from the button with jack-five. Unfortunately, Cormier woke up with aces and Bicknell couldn't crack them.

With just the top five making the money, none of the final six wanted to leave empty-handed. Jonathan Karamalikis was the first to put himself at risk, scoring a double that left Engel with crumbs. Engel busted soon after, bursting the money bubble.

Francois Billard found a good spot to keep his run going, moving all-in with ace-ten and getting Cormier to call with king-queen. A ten in the door was a pleasant sight for Billard but the jack and nine behind it were not. Cormier flopped a straight and Billard couldn't improve.

Cormier claimed his next victim after JK Kastner shoved with pocket tens, running into Cormier's queens and a heads-up battle was set after David Ormsby ran into Karamalikis' pocket aces to fall in third.

Heads-up play began rather even with Karamalikis taking an early lead. Cormier quickly reversed the lead and started to pull away. On the final hand, Karamalikis shoved with ace-eight, right into Cormier's pocket kings.

The World Cup of Cards is winding down and that means it's time for the Canadian Poker Championship. The headlining event of the WCC features a $2,200 buy-in with a guarantee of $2,000,000. The first of four live flights kicks off on Friday with Day 1a underway at noon.

Jonathan Karamalikis Eliminated in 2nd Place ($97,000)

Level 20 : 20,000/40,000, 4,000 ante
Jonathan Karamalikis
Jonathan Karamalikis

Jeff Cormier had the button and paused for a moment before putting in a raise to 100,000. Jonathan Karamalikis looked down at his cards and promptly announced "All-in". Cormier snap-called, beating Karamalikis in the pot.

Jonathan Karamalikis: {a-Clubs}{8-Spades}
Jeff Cormier: {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}

Karamalikis was the player at risk and had some catching up to do with ace-high, up against two kings.

The flop came {10-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{2-Spades} and Karamalikis still needed to hit an ace or some running cards to improve and stay alive. The turn was the {q-Spades} and Karamalikis was down to just an ace for outs. The river was the {4-Diamonds} and Karamalikis couldn't improve, making him the runner-up in the $10,300 No Limit Hold'em 6-Max High Roller for $97,000.

Cormier locks up the win, the trophy and $160,000 for his efforts today.

A full recap will be posted shortly.

David Ormsby
David Ormsby

After half of David Ormsby's chips were shipped over to Jonathan Karamalikis a few hands before, Ormsby put himself at risk shoving preflop for 297,000 with {7-Hearts}{6-Hearts} and got calls from Karamalikis holding {a-Spades}{a-Hearts} in the small blind and Jeff Cormier with {3-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} in the big blind.

The flop was {j-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{7-Spades} and Karamalikis bet 275,000 forcing Cormier out of the hand. Ormsby needed help but found nothing on the {q-Spades}{10-Clubs} run-out, falling in third place.

JK Kastner open-jammed preflop with {10-Spades}{10-Hearts} but ran into Jeff Cormier holding {q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}. A sick cooler would spell the end for Kastner as the board ran out {7-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{a-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{5-Clubs} and he was sent to the payout desk to pick up a nice fifth place cash worth $43,000.

Jeff Cormier raised to 58,000 from under the gun and Francois Billard moved all-in for 295,000 from the cutoff. Cormier tanked for about half of a minute and eventually called.

Billard was risk and ahead with {a-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}, up against Cormier's {k-Hearts}{q-Clubs}.

The flop came {j-Spades}{10-Spades}{9-Spades} and Cormier flopped the nut straight. Neither player held a spade so Billard needed to back into a hand to survive. The turn was the {8-Diamonds} and Billard was drawing dead to the {j-Diamonds} on the river to finish for back-to-back High Roller min-cashes at Playground.

Kristen Bicknell
Kristen Bicknell

Action folded to partypoker Team Pro Kristen Bicknell on the button and she shoved for 193,000, about nine big blinds. Chip leader Jeff Cormier was in the small bind and re-shoved, while Francois Billard mucked his button.

Kristen Bicknell: {j-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}
Jeff Cormier: {a-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}

Bicknell was at risk and needed to flop big for a chance to survive. The flop came {j-Clubs}{3-Spades}{2-Clubs} and Bicknell paired her jack. The turn was the {4-Spades} to give Bicknell a straight draw also, but the river was the {8-Hearts} and she was eliminated just two spots from the money.

Sam Chartier
Sam Chartier

Sam Chartier was left with just two big blinds after losing a three-way all-in and finally got his chips in the middle with ace-five.

Chip leader Jeff Cormier called with ace-three, and while it was looking like it would probably be a chop, Cormier flopped a three and Chartier headed for the rail after firing three bullets in this event.
