Daune Fernandez Tops the Day 1c Field of the Canadian Poker Championships

Level 9 : 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante
Daune Fernandez
Daune Fernandez

Day 1c of the partypoker LIVE Canadian Poker Championships at Playground Poker Club is in the books with 166 players surviving nine levels of play. A total of 310 entries were received on Sunday and topping the field was Daune Fernandez.

Fernandez accumulated a stack of 5,879,000 to claim the Day 1c chip lead and put himself third on the overall leaderboard. Following behind Fernandez in the counts were Kevin Rivest (4,462,000), Shijaudin Daud Sha (4,372,000), Glenn Allan (4,312,000), and Spiro Mikrogianakis (4,292,000).

Mikrogianakis rocketed up the leaderboard on the final hand of the night calling a preflop seven-bet shove from Noeung Troeung with pocket aces. Troeung had pocket kings and Will Failla who had five-bet shoved held pocket fours. A four and a king found their way on the flop but a big, juicy ace on the turn squashed both of Mikrogianakis' opponents hopes.

WPT Champions Club member Eric Afriat just missed out on a top five spot bagging 4,041,000. Alex Allison (3,134,000), Chanracy Khun (3,067,000), Benoit Jean (2,981,000), Shaan Siddiqui (2,525,000), Jason Duval (2,176,000), and 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event Champion Jonathan Duhamel (1,943,000) are just a few of the notables to secure a seat on Day 2.

Some notables still without a bag and in need of another bullet include Nicky Evans, Brian Morgan, Cassidy Battikha, Jason Conforti, Thi Nguyen, and Will Failla who busted on the final hand of the night.

Monday will be a very busy day inside Playground. The Day 1d turbo flight is set to get underway at noon local time, ending around 4 p.m. and an hour later starting at 5 p.m., Day 2 will kick off. Eight levels are on the schedule for Day 2 with late-registration and option for a single re-entry open until the end of the Level 12.

Seven Bets Preflop

Level 9 : 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante
Spiro Mikrogianakis
Spiro Mikrogianakis

After an open from early position, Spiro Mikrogianakis three-bet to 80,000 sparking a huge raise war. Noeung Troeng four-bet to 280,000, Will Failla five-bet all-in for 60,000, Mikrogianakis six-bet to 525,000, Troeung seven=bet jammed all-in and Mikrogianakis called, putting himself at risk with 2,289,000.

Troeung: {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}
Mikrogianakis: {a-Diamonds}{a-Spades}
Failla: {4-Hearts}{4-Spades}

The board ran out {k-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}{9-Hearts} and all three players made a set. Unfortunately, for Failla and Troeung, their's was the worst and Mikrogianakis scooped a monstrously huge pot.

Afriat Good With Nut No-Pair

Level 8 : 8,000/16,000, 16,000 ante
Eric Afriat
Eric Afriat

Eric Afriat shoved on the river of a {4-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{a-Hearts}{10-Spades} board with about 600,000 in the middle. His heads-up opponent had checked and was in the tank, having fewer chips than Afriat. Afriat's opponent eventually called and Afriat paused before revealing his hand, knowing he had been caught bluffing.

His opponent didn't table his hand either. So Afriat turned over {k-Clubs}{q-Hearts} for just king-high. His opponent just sat there stunned.

"He has king-high bro," a tablemate announced trying to help out.

"I know.. I have king-jack," replied Afriat's opponent as he pushed his stack forward and left the table.

Huge Cooler Propels Paulin

Level 7 : 6,000/12,000, 12,000 ante
Pierre Paul Paulin
Pierre Paul Paulin

Pierre Paul Paulin has scored a huge double up after a sick cooler against Diana Shamshoum. We missed the action but witnessed the aftermath.

The board read {4-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{j-Spades}{a-Clubs} and Paulin's remaining stack of 1,278,000 was being cut down and Shamshoum was forced to match it. Laying in front of Paulin was {k-Spades}{k-Hearts} and according to the table talk, all the money went in on the flop and Shamshoum lost with pocket queens.

Paulin is now among the top counts in the room.

Duhamel Four-Bet Jams the River

Level 6 : 5,000/10,000, 10,000 ante
Jonathan Duhamel
Jonathan Duhamel

On a board reading {10-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}, with about 135,000 in the middle, Shawn Daigle checked from the big blind.

2010 WSOP Main Event champion Jonathan Duhamel bet 90,000 and Daigle paused for a moment before check-raising to 235,000. Duhamel wasted no time and four-bet shoved for over 2 million, with Daigle being put to the test for a little over a million. Daigle quickly folded and Duhamel raked in the pot.

The champ currently sits on 2,255,000 approaching the dinner break.

Guay's Stack is Going Up

Level 3 : 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante
David Guay
David Guay

Kathy Sawers raised to 15,000 from the hijack and action was on her neighbor, David Guay, in the cutoff. He paused for a moment and made it 45,000 to go. Manfred Gunther called from the big blind and Sawers followed suit.

The flop came {k-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{3-Clubs} and action checked to Guay who bet 43,000. Gunther called and Sawers folded.

The turn was the {4-Hearts}. Gunther checked again and this time Guay put out a hefty bet of 184,000. Gunther wasted no time and sent his cards into the muck.

Guay is now up to 2,175,000 chips, looking to build on his hot summer at the World Series of Poker this year. He came in second place in the $1,000 NL Tag Team event with his best friend and Millionaire Maker winner Pablo Mariz, and then went deep in the Main Event to finish in 22nd place for over $260,000.

Top Set is No Good Against Afriat

Level 2 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Eric Afriat
Eric Afriat

We got to the table on the turn on a board reading {k-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{3-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}, with 75,000 in the pot.

Norman Gauthier was in the hijack and had 210,000 in front of him. Eric Afriat was in the cutoff and moved all-in with 1,039,000. Gauthier was in the tank and eventually called.

Afriat tabled {4-Clubs}{2-Clubs} for a straight to the six, and Gauthier disappointingly tabled {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs} for top set.

The river was the {10-Clubs} and Afriat doubled up. "I should've known. I played with him for years" said Gauthier as he paid the bet.

The WPT champion is now up to 2,200,000 in chips, while Gauthier is down to 505,000.

Get Ready for Day 1c of the Canadian Poker Championships With $2 Million Guaranteed!

Today is Day 1c of the Canadian Poker Championships at the Playground Poker Club for the third of four starting flights in this massive event with $2 million guaranteed in the prize pool. Cards are in the air at Noon local time in beautiful Kahnawake, Quebec in Canada.

As of now, there have been 336 entries between the first two starting days, which includes direct buy-ins, re-entries and the players that brought their stacks over from the live and online Phase One tournaments. So far there are 202 players heading into Day 2 between the live and online starting flights, but registration is open until the end of Level 12 on Day 2 so there's plenty of time to try and build multiple stacks to take through.

As has been the case for the last two starting flights, players begin with 1,000,000 if they buy in directly, or they start with the stack they carried over from the Phase One tournaments. Registration remains open throughout the day, and there will be a break every two levels, with a dinner break after Level 6. Blinds will be 60-minutes long and players will bag and tag at the end of Level 9.

Day 1d is on Monday at Noon and is a turbo format with 20-minute levels. This will be the last starting flight before Day 2 starts up at 5:00 p.m. on Monday.

As it stands, the biggest stack belongs to Daren Keyes after he racked up a hefty bag of chips worth 7,183,000 last night on Day 1b.
