Welcome to Day 1a of the World Poker Tour (WPT) National Montreal. The $600 NL Hold'em event aligned with the World Cup of Cards hosted by Playground Poker Club in Kahnawake, Quebec boasts a $400,000 guarantee with seven starting flights. The event will run between August 19-25.
Playground has been a favorite stop for the WPT in Canada. This will be the ninth time a champion is crowned by the WPT inside Playground. Some former champions include Jonathan Roy, Jason Comtois, Amir Babakhani, Jared Mahoney, Sheraz Nasir, and Derrick Rosenbarger.
Each Day 1 will pay 12% of the starting field and play down to the final 5%. Payouts will be $750, $1,000 or $1,250 based on where a player busts. This is a re-entry event and players will have the option to re-enter on any Day 1 before registration closes at the end of the break following Level 8. Players may choose to play multiple Day 1’s even if they have previously qualified. Only a player’s best stack will carry over to Day 2, though any forfeited stack will be worth a bonus $1,500.
Long time World Poker Tour (WP) tournament director Matt Savage has made his first-ever appearance inside Playground Poker Club and has just got play underway announcing "shuffle up and deal." Savage also mentioned he will be playing some cash games today.
Walking past the table we seen that Jerome Theriault had doubled his starting stack and the seat next to him was empty. According to the seating chart that seat was previously owned by Kauvsegan Ehamparam.
With a flop of Charles La Boissonniere bet 1,600 and was called by Frank Gregory. The fell on the turn and La Boissonniere opened for 2,800. Gregory made the call once again and the two saw the on the river.
La Boissonniere moved all-in for 9,100 and Gregory made the call. La Boissonniere tabled for a flush and Gregory mucked.
Fabio Luongo has been very active early. He played three hands in a row and got paid off when he rivered a full house with . The board read and his opponent checked. Luongo bet 3,500 and his opponent called.
Luongo is the younger brother of Roberto Luongo, a long-time goalie in the National Hockey League and an avid poker player. Fabio has earned just over $54,000 USD in tournament winnings. He is sitting a bit above the starting stack as the first level comes to a close.
