Higgs Tames the Beast

Level 6 : 250/500, 50 ante
Ryan Riess
Ryan Riess

Dylan Kehoe pointed out that Ryan Riess was just eliminated shortly before the end of Level 5. A quick glance at the table showed a massive stack for Sam Higgs and the 2014 WSOP Asia-Pacific bracelet winner told us what happened.

Higgs raised to 1,000 and got two callers before Riess made it 5,000 out of the big blind. Higgs, as well as the two other opponents, called and they went four ways to the {4-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}{8-Spades} flop. Riess checked, Higgs bet 12,000, got one call and one fold, then the former WSOP Main Event champion check-raised all in for just over 30,000 on top of Higgs' bet. Higgs moved all in to isolate.

The cold caller folded, and Higgs showed {A-}{K-}. Riess was in trouble with {A-}{Q-}, and both the {9-Spades} on the turn and the {5-Clubs} on the river failed to improve "Riess the Beast."

Drinan Loses a Chunk

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante

Connor Drinan made it 1,000 to go from early position, and a player in later position reraised to 2,700. Action got back to Drinan, and he moved all in. His opponent called it off for 13,500 with the {A-Clubs}{Q-Spades}, and Drinan had the {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}.

The flop, turn, and river ran out {A-Spades}{9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}, and Drinan lost the pot.

Move Gone Wrong for Nguyen

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante

Former big stack Thao Nguyen is slipping further after trying to push out an opponent on the {8-Diamonds} {Q-Spades} {9-Diamonds} {K-Clubs} turn. Nguyen however got called by {Q-Diamonds} {2-Diamonds} and had to reveal {7-Hearts} {6-Hearts} for an open ended straight draw. The {8-Spades} was not enough help and Nguyen shipped over more than 10,000 in chips to his table neighbor.

Hachem Check-Jams the Turn

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante

Anthony Hachem, son of Joe Hachem and nephew of Tony Hachem, raised to 1,100 from the hijack seat before Stevan Chew reraised to 2,700 from the button. Action folded back to Hachem, and he called to see the flop come down {K-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{4-Spades}. Hachem checked, and Chew bet 2,100. Hachem called.

On the turn, the dealer added the {2-Spades} to the board. Hachem checked, and Chew bet 6,500. Hachem check-raised all in for 22,600, and Chew quickly folded.

Yan Takes on an Octo-Niner

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante

[Removed:17] raised to 1,000 from the hijack and Jesse Sylvia called from the cutoff. The button and blinds all folded and it was heads-up action to the {2-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} flop. Yan check-called a bet of 1,200 and then check-called one of 3,500 on the {7-Clubs} turn.

When the {K-Spades} completed the board on the river, Yan checked for a third time and Sylvia bet 6,500. Yan then sprung to life with a check-raise to 21,900, and that was enough to get Sylvia to lay down his hand.

Rutter Squeezes from the Button

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante

From early position, Connor Drinan raised to 1,000. Aaron Lim called from middle position, Anthony Hachem called from the cutoff seat, and then Stuart Rutter reraised to 5,000 on the button. Action folded back to Drinan, and he too gave it up. Lim and Hachem quickly followed suit, and Rutter picked up the pot.
