Mistaken Identity?

Fernando Jacobo
Fernando Jacobo
Browsing over the Day 1 starters list provided to us by the tournament staff, the name "FERNAN JACOBO" caught our eye. The name should ring a bell for anyone who followed the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas this past summer.

Jacobo Fernandez is his full name, and he was a serious contender in the WSOP Player of the Year race, which was eventually won by Erick Lindgren. Fernandez cashed seven times and amassed over $600,000 in prize money over the summer. "Great!" we thought. Another big name here in little old Tahoe.

We paid a visit to this "FERNAN JACOBO's" seat, only to find that the man we expected to be sitting there, wasn't. Instead, we found the guy pictured here, Fernando Jacobo.

Jacobo stopped us during a recent rotation and asked if we were writing live updates. After giving him the spiel, we told him about the "other" Jacobo, and when asked what his name was, our Jacobo replied with a laugh, "Yeah, I'm a nobody."

Not anymore, Fernando! Welcome to the world of international poker celebrity. This post will surely spark a cult following and maybe even two or three fan sites.

Fernando currently sits with 15,625 in chips and a big ol' smile on his face.

The Dinner Bell Tolls

The tournament clock has been paused while the players go on a 60-minute dinner break.

Also of note, Tournament Director Janis Sexton announced that we'll be playing two more levels when we return from the dinner break, rather than one, as originally scheduled.

Crazy Eights!

Scott Clements
Scott Clements
Scott Clements, from the button, bet 5,000 after his opponent checked a flop of {A-Spades} {8-Hearts} {6-Clubs}. The two saw the turn come {K-Clubs} before the other player took the initiative and bet 5,000. Clements announced he was all in, and was called before he could finish the phrase. Clements' opponent, holding a smaller chip stack and at risk, tabled {A-?} {6-?} and saw that he was behind the the three eights of Clements after Clements revealed he had two snowmen in the hole. The river was a meaningless {3-Hearts}. Clements shot up the leaderboard with his newly-acquired chips and now sits with 76,000.

Ferguson Wins a Monster

Neil Blumenfield
Neil Blumenfield
Chris "Jesus" Ferguson just took down a big pot, eliminating Neil Blumenfield in the process, to climb to 48,500 in chips.

Blumenfield, Ferguson and David Paul all limped in before the flop, the small blind folded, and the big blind checked his option. The flop came {K-Clubs} {6-Hearts} {5-Clubs} and the action was checked to Blumenfield, who led out with a bet of 1,000. Ferguson and Paul both called, and the big blind folded.

The {Q-Spades} fell on the turn and Blumenfield fired again, this time making it 2,500 to go. Ferguson then opted to raise the minimum, kicking it up to 5,000. Paul made the call and when the action got back around to Blumenfield, he moved all in over the top for 750 more. Both Ferguson and Paul made the call.

The last card off the deck was the {J-Hearts} and Ferguson fired a 6,000 bullet that forced Paul out of the pot. At the showdown, Blumenfield tabled {J-Clubs} {10-Clubs} for a busted draw that had turned into a pair of jacks by the river. Ferguson revealed {K-Hearts} {Q-Hearts} for top two pair which earned him the pot.

After the hand, Paul was left with approximately 23,800 in chips.

Ouch!

Aaron Kanter all in
Aaron Kanter all in
"Floor!" was the call after Fernando Jacobo had mistakenly turned up his hand preflop following some confusion. With players left to act behind him, Jacobo was forced to play the hand face-up according to the ruling. Aaron Kanter, the other contestant in the hand, remarked, "This should be easy to play." The flop came {4-Spades} {K-Diamonds} {7-Spades} and Jacobo led out with 2,400, only to be called. The turn came {9-Spades} and was checked over to Kanter. Kanter wasted little time putting his remaining 3,500 at risk. After deliberating through all the hands that could beat his revealed queens, Jacabo called and saw the {A-Hearts} {K-Clubs} of Kanter had in fact gone ahead of his queens. The river {A-Diamonds} improved Kanter's already winning hand.

Kanter has about 15,500 after the strange debacle, while Jacobo was left with only 10,300. Adding insult to injury Jacobo was assessed a one-round penalty for his mistake!

Suer Says His Last Goodbye

Robert Suer has just been eliminated from the tournament by Django Broomfield.

The two traded preflop raises until the action culminated with an all-in raise from Suer which cost Broomfield 15,500 more to call. The call was made and a preflop showdown ensued:

Broomfield: {A-Hearts} {K-Hearts}
Suer: {A-Clubs} {7-Clubs}

The board filled out {4-Clubs} {5-Hearts} {3-Hearts} {J-Spades} {3-Clubs} and Broomfield's ace-king high held up to earn him the pot.

"I had a feeling that was a tilt raise," said Broomfield as he raked in his new chips. "I figure at worst I'm up against a pair there."

After the hand, Broomfield stacked up 44,800 in chips.

Cohen-Landrum Joins the Rail

Sabyl Cohen-Landrum
Sabyl Cohen-Landrum
Sabyl Cohen-Landrum has just been eliminated from the tournament by Scott Roberds.

Sabyl reraised her last 6,025 and was all in before the flop. Roberds made the call, saying, "I'm pretty sure I have the best hand," before tabling {A-Diamonds} {9-Clubs}; Landrum revealed a pocket pair of sevens and the two were off to the races.

The {10-Spades} {A-Clubs} {Q-Clubs} {6-Hearts} {9-Spades} board fell in favor of Roberds, who finished the hand with two pair (aces and nines) to take down the pot.

Three-Way All-In

It started with an all-in under the gun by John Neitzel for his last 12,050, which was matched by the all-in proclamation of another player with slightly more chips from middle position. The next player to act, Shayne Heine, then declared his all-in. Seeing three all-ins, the rest of the table deferred to play the hand, and the table was set. Neitzel tabled {A-Clubs} {K-Clubs}, the unknown player {J-Clubs} {J-Spades}, and Heine {Q-Diamonds} {Q-Hearts}.

Neitzel didn't have to wait long as the {A-Hearts} appeared in the door and was accompanied by {8-Clubs} {7-Clubs} on the flop. The turn produced the {4-Diamonds} and the river the {7-Spades}, which was not enough to take the lead away from Neitzel, who tripled up.

After counting out the main pot, Heine received the consolation prize of the side pot leaving him with around 12,000 after the hand. Neitzel was happy to survive the battle and sits with 37,000 in front of him.
