Slow and Steady for Masek

Alexandru Masek
Alexandru Masek

Alexandru Masek is a beast on the WSOP Circuit with four gold rings to his name. He's constantly putting himself in contention for a record-tying fifth with slow and steady play, though it has eluded him thus far. Masek is playing here on Day 1a but has been fairly quiet.

In a recent hand, there was about 4,000 in the pot and a board reading {10-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} when Masek led out for 1,650 from the small blind. His opponent in the hijack called, while the cutoff got out of the way. When the {10-Hearts} appeared on the river, Masek bet a modest 2,300, which was enough to take down the pot without a showdown.

Clements Sends One Packing

After an unknown player had raised to 800, a middle-position player moved all in for 7,025. Scott Clements was in the cutoff and made the call, while the original raiser got out of the way.

Showdown

Clements{J-Clubs}{J-Hearts}
MP{A-Spades}{K-Spades}

It was off to the races with Clements holding a slight lead. The {4-Spades}{6-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} flop wasn't very interesting, and neither was the {4-Clubs} turn. Clements just needed to dodge an ace and king on the river to eliminate his opponent, which is exactly what he did when the {7-Hearts} blanked.

"Queens Always Beat Aces"

Aaron Massey just informed us that he has been eliminated from the tournament. He held pocket aces and the flop came {K-} {K-} {4-} and his opponent immediately said, "Nice hand."

"You have pocket queens," Massey stated. "And queens always beat aces."

Sure enough, his opponent did have pocket queens and spiked a queen on the turn. Massey didn't hit an ace will be playing in the evening flight.

Lee Tanks on River

Level 7 : 200/400, 50 ante

We found a biggish pot at the river with Bernard Lee in pain over his decision. The board read {6-Spades} {A-Diamonds} {8-Hearts} {6-Diamonds} {K-Hearts} and there was around 10,000 in the pot already. Lee's opponent checked on the river, Lee bet 3,525 and his opponent shoved all in.

Lee struggled for a few minutes with his decision, asked the dealer to spread the pot and was shuffling his remaining 30,000 or so chips. He elected to fold and looked dissatisfied when his opponent didn't show his cards.
