Napkins Don't Play, but Jack-High Does

We had to look fast, but we did see Dwyte Pilgrim at the end of Day 1a. Having bought in right at the end of the flight, the three-time WSOP Circuit ring winner tried to score a quick double-up, but busted in the process.

He's back for Day 1b, and appears settled in for a longer stay this time. In fact, just now we saw him in what might be called literal "surrender mode," yet things worked out for him nonetheless.

The hand began with a middle position raise to 125, called both by Pilgrim in the cutoff and by the big blind. The flop came {K-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}, and after the big blind checked the original raiser bet 175. Pilgrim called, as did the big blind. "You got company," said Pilgrim to the bettor.

But the turn {4-Diamonds} and river {K-Hearts} saw no further action from the trio, all checking around on both streets. Before the others tabled their cards, Pilgrim held up a cocktail napkin, waving it aloft.

"I surrender," he said with a grin, indicating his belief that his hand couldn't possibly be best. But the other two were hesitating. Finally the big blind turned his cards over. "Nine-high," he said, showing {9-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}. Then the preflop aggressor mucked.

"No way!" said Pilgrim, showing his {J-Clubs}{10-Spades} as he set down the napkin and dragged the small pot.

Perlov Picking Up Where He Left Off

Artyem Perlov, fresh off a win in the DeepStacks Poker Tour Mohegan Sun National Championship, is off to a good start on Day 1b.

He didn't participate in Day 1a, but took his seat for Day 1b a few minutes and has already won two pots that we've seen. We arrived at the end of the first hand, but Perlov and an opponent checked the river of a {10-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{A-Hearts} board and Perlov's {J-Spades}{J-Clubs} took it down.

The following hand, Perlov was in the small blind and called the player in the cutoff's raise of 300. The player in the big blind, called, too, and the trio saw an {A-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{5-Hearts} flop. Perlov checked to the player in the big blind and she bet 550. The cutoff folded, Perlov called, and the {9-Diamonds} hit the turn. Both checked through to the {J-Diamonds} river where Perlov bet 1,250.

The player in the big blind flashed the {A-Clubs} before folding, giving the pot to Perlov.

Early Action at Table 44

We just saw an interesting four-way hand over at Table 44 with significant action and a large pot.

After Charles Townsend opened with a raise to 325 from middle position, Jack Klein called from the cutoff, Yung Hwang called from the small blind, and Chris Reslock also called from the big blind. The came all babies — {4-Spades}{3-Spades}{2-Diamonds} — and when checked to Townsend continued for 750. Klein then raised to 1,550, and Hwang didn't wait long before reraising to 3,350. Reslock folded, and Townsend promptly set his entire stack all in.

Townsend's push sent Klein deep into the tank, muttering "so sick" repeatedly as he contemplated what to do. Finally after several minutes the clock was called, and with time running out Townsend finally folded his hand. Hwang then called all in, showing {6-Clubs}{5-Clubs}, and Townsend flipped over his {6-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} for the matching nut straight.

As the {9-Clubs} turn and {J-Hearts} were dealt out, Klein told all he'd folded {3-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}, his exhalations of relief caused both by the sight of the straights and the board ultimately failing to pair.

Bowker Doesn't Get There

In a multi-way pot with the board reading {K-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{3-Hearts}, action was checked to Kyle Bowker who bet 800. One player called to see the {7-Clubs} turn where Bowker bet 5,000, covering the rest of his opponent's stack.

A call from Bowker's opponent for about 4,500 revealed {K-Clubs}{J-Spades}, leading Bowker's {K-Hearts}{10-Hearts}. The {5-Diamonds} river was no help to Bowker, but he's still off to a fine start on Day 1b with about 32,000.

Evening Poker

Level 3 : 75/150, 0 ante

We're only an hour-and-a-half into the Day 1b flight — and again late registration lasts all of the way to the start of tomorrow's Day 2 — but it's looking like a smaller group has gathered for the evening session than we saw earlier today.

The big board is currently showing 228 players have registered so far for Day 1b, with some of those having already taken one shot in the earlier flight.

Pilgrim Chipping Up

With the board reading {K-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}{9-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} and a hefty 19,000 in the pot, Dwyte Pilgrim was all in for about 17,500. His opponent tanked for a good while and Pilgrim had plenty to say during that time.

"You have a jack in your hand? Whaaaaaaaaaaaat. I've seen millions of hands and a lot of players fold a jack here."

Alas, Pilgirm's opponent did indeed fold and Pilgrim took down the pot.

Reslock In the Right Seat

Will Failla is back for Day 1b, taking another shot after his brief appearance at the end of Day 1a failed to work out for him. He's sounding like he'd prefer to have drawn a different seat.

Sitting to the right of Yung Hwang, Failla watched him raise a hand to 325, something Hwang has been doing fairly frequently. "I'm supposed to be sitting on your left," cracked Failla to Hwang. "It would be much better."

Hwang smiled in response, playing out the hand with his earbuds in and losing a small pot to the button. Then came another hand, and another raise to 325 from Hwang. This time Chris Reslock — sitting in the seat Failla would prefer on Hwang's left — made the call.

The flop came {2-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}{Q-Clubs} and Hwang checked. Reslock bet 500, and Hwang responded by check-raising to 1,250. Reslock quickly called. The turn was the {3-Clubs}, and this time Hwang pushed out two orange chips for a bet of 2,000. Reslock again called without much hesitation.

The river was the {Q-Spades}, and Hwang tapped the table to check. Reslock sat up and exhaled. "That wasn't my card," he said with a smile as he checked behind, showing his {8-Clubs}{7-Clubs} for a flush. But then Hwang mucked his cards, and Reslock grinned, somewhat relieved his flush was still best.

"It was your card," cracked Failla to Reslock. After slipping early, Reslock has chipped back up around the starting stack.
