Day 1b Concludes with Liou On Top

Day 1b of the World Series of Poker Circuit Main Event at the Horseshoe Hammond attracted 677 runners. Play was undoubtedly slower during the second starting flight, but Phillip Liou still managed to bag up bunches of chips. He finished the day on 347,500 and topped the pack.

The field didn't quite reach the 835 entries from Day 1a, but there were still plenty of notables in the mix. Some of the names in action were WSOP gold bracelet winners Robert and Michael Mizrachi, Robert Cheung, Brian Hastings, Bob Slezak, Gavin Smith and Nick Jivkov. All of them were eliminated, though, and it was Michael Mizrachi going home the earliest.

Mizrachi's trip to Hammond only lasted about a half an hour into Level 3 before he eliminated by Ghaleb Zayed. From under the gun, Zayed raised to 425 with the blinds at 75/150. Mizrachi was next to act and made the call. Everyone else folded, prompting a {J-Spades}{5-Spades}{4-Diamonds} flop from the dealer. Zayed bet 425, and Mizrachi raised all in for a little under 4,000. Zayed quickly called with top set — {J-Diamonds}{J-Clubs} — to have Mizrachi's {8-Spades}{8-Clubs} in bad shape. The turn came the {7-Diamonds} and river the {10-Hearts} to send Mizrachi to the rail.

Chad Brown, Victor Ramdin, Jean Gaspard, Matt Brady, Allen Kessler and Matt Affleck were also bounced to the rail as the field was whittled down over the course of the day.

Of those to advance from Day 1b's field were Eddie Ochana, Faraz Jaka, Joseph Elpayaa, Ryan Julius and Tom Koral. They'll be amongst those returning to join up with the remaining 170 players from the first starting flight for Sunday's Day 2.

Speaking of that Day 2, the cards will be in the air at noon local time. Registration will remain open until the start of Day 2, allowing players who haven't entered, or those who have only fired one bullet, to get into the action with 20,000 in starting chips. PokerNews will be back on Sunday with all of the live coverage and we hope to have you around then.

Elpayaa Busts Holloway

Action folded to the hijack seat, and that player raised to 1,125. Blair Hinkle flat-called from the cutoff seat, then Joseph Elpayaa reraised to 3,400 on the button. PokerNews' own Chad Holloway reraised all in from the small blind for 8,225, and action folded back to Elpayaa. He called with the {K-Hearts}{Q-Hearts} and held the same suit as Holloway's {A-Hearts}{10-Hearts}.

The flop gave Elpayaa three queens when the {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}{7-Hearts} fell and vaulted Elpayaa into the lead. The turn was the {8-Spades} and river the {10-Clubs}, which eliminated Holloway here on Day 1b.

Sunny Makes Quads

Hiren "Sunny" Patel makes quads
Hiren "Sunny" Patel makes quads

Hiren "Sunny" Patel was faced with a bet of 11,000 on a board of {j-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{9-Spades}{2-Clubs}{k-Clubs}. After tanking for the better part of a minute, he grabbed a tower of yellow T1,000 chips and orange T5,000 chips, and slid it forward, moving all in.

His opponent sat back in his chair, and re-checked his cards. Crossing his arms, he stared at the board thoughtfully, then eventually pushed forward the remainder of his stack.

Patel turned over {j-Spades}{j-Clubs} for quad jacks, and his opponent could only smile. Patel offered a handshake to the eliminated player, then began stacking his newfound chips.

Mizrachi Eliminated

Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi's trip to Hammond only lasted about a half an hour into Level 3 here on Day 1b of the World Series of Poker Circuit event. He was just eliminated by Ghaleb Zayed on the following hand.

From under the gun, Zayed raised to 425.

"I need six, seven," said Mizrachi in hopes of backing into a straight.

It wouldn't be as the turn came the {7-Diamonds} and river the {10-Hearts} to send him to the rail.

Mizrachi Doing His Thing

After a raise to 300 from a player in middle position and a reraise to 800 from the hijack seat, Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi called on the button. The blinds folded, then the original raiser called.

The three players took the {J-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} flop, and the first player checked. The hijack seat fired 1,200, and Mizrachi called. The first player folded.

On the turn, the {4-Spades} paired the board, and the first player checked. Mizrachi bet 2,025, and his opponent made the call.

The river was the {6-Spades}, and the hijack seat bet 2,100. Mizrachi raised all in for 7,000 total, and his opponent began to tank.

"Don't be mad at me when you see this," commented Mizrachi while pointing down at his hole cards. His opponent laughed, and Mizrachi continued, "I shouldn't have been in from the beginning. This is a very bad beat."

The two exchanged some more friendly back and forth, then Mizrachi added, "If you don't wanna get upset, just fold."

After another minute or so, and after claiming to have just ace high, Mizrachi's opponent folded.
