Heshmati Leads Way to Day 2 of WSOP Circuit Thunder Valley $3,250 High Roller

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
Mike Heshmati
Mike Heshmati

The 2019 World Series of Poker Circuit Thunder Valley $3,250 High Roller got a late-afternoon start time of 4 p.m. on Thursday. When the day started, just six players were registered. That number nearly tripled over the first two hours of play, and it reached a total of 35 entries by end of day.

Mike Heshmati found himself atop the leader board upon the conclusion of Day 1, finishing the day with 172,500 in chips. Heshmati joined the tournament during the first two hours of play and chipped up slightly by the first break, taking his 40,000 starting stack to just over 46,000. That was only the beginning of his day, however.

As the day went on, he found himself over 60,000 moving into Level 9. He continued to build from there, eclipsing a six-figure stack shortly after the last level of the night. Less than two hours later, he found himself as the chip leader when eight hours and a dozen 40-minute levels of play had been completed.

Rounding out the top three include a few familiar faces to the Thunder Valley Poker room. Ian Steinman (157,000) and Noel Rodriguez (145,000) will enter the day second and third in chips, respectively.

Other notable players to find bags also happen to be well-known inside the venue. JC Tran (130,500) and Brett Murray (101,000) both will also enter Day 2 with six-figure stacks.

The field is sure to grow before Day 2 begins at noon on Friday as late registration will remain open cards are in the air for the beginning of Level 13. Like Day 1, levels will last 40 minutes each and play will occur until a winner has been determined.

PokerNews will be on hand to catch all the action. Be sure to come back for it all.

JC Tran
JC Tran

JC Tran opened to 2,700 and action folded around to Brett Murray, who defended his big blind. The flop came {7-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} and Murray checked. Tran made a continuation-bet of 3,000 and Murray announced a check-raise to 9,500, which Tran called.

Both players checked the turn {6-Hearts} to bring the river {9-Hearts}, where Murray checked again. Tran threw out a bet of 21,000, sending Murray into the tank. After about 100 seconds, he called.

Tran tabled {j-Diamonds}{j-Spades} and Murray sent his cards into the muck.

"Stupid river. Stupid runout," Murray said as the dealer shipped Tran the pot. "Agh! Nice hand," he added.

Noel Rodriguez: {10-Clubs}{10-Spades}

Board: {7-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{8-Spades}

Heshmati Three-Bets on the Turn, Takes it Down

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Mike Heshmati
Mike Heshmati

Mike Heshmati opened to 2,500 from the cutoff, and Glenn Miller called from the small blind.

Miller checked and Heshmati continued for 2,800 on the {8-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{3-Clubs} flop, with Miller coming along with a call. Miller checked again on the {10-Hearts} turn, and Hesmati bet 6,800.

Miller put in the check-raise, making it 16,500 total. Heshmati then three-bet to 76,800.

The large three-bet shut down Miller, who sits with just over 20,000 in chips after being on the losing end of the escalating battle of raises on the turn.

Kumar Hits the Rail

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Jasthi Kumar
Jasthi Kumar

Tony Hoang raised to 2,100 from the cutoff and Jasthi Kumar shipped the last of his chips in over the top from the button. The players in the blinds folded and Hoang quickly called.

Jasthi Kumar: {q-Spades}{10-Spades}
Tony Hoang: {j-Spades}{j-Clubs}

The flop came {2-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}, giving Kumar an unexciting top pair after the jack was visible in the window. The turn {a-Hearts} did give him four outs to Broadway, but the clean river {3-Diamonds} left him with the second-best hand and no chips to play as a result.

Rodriguez Sends Villaman To the Rail

Level 9 : 400/800, 800 ante
Noel Rodriguez
Noel Rodriguez

Ray Villaman was in the cutoff and saw action folded to him. He opened to 1,800, receiving calls from both Noel Rodriguez in the small blind and Mike Heshmati in the big blind.

The flop came {k-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{8-Clubs} and action checked to Villaman, who put out a continuation-bet of 3,300. Rodriguez thought for a bit, deciding to check-raise to 8,500. Heshmati got out of the way and Villaman went all in for around 17,500. Rodriguez called.

Ray Villaman: {q-Clubs}{j-Clubs}
Noel Rodriguez: {k-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}

Rodriguez was ahead with top pair, needing to hold versus Villaman's flush draw. The turn came {3-Clubs} to give Villaman a flush, however the river {10-Clubs} brought a fourth club on board to give Rodriguez a king-high flush, resulting in Villaman being sent to the rail shortly before the final break of the evening.

Welcome Back, Mr. Jha!

Level 9 : 400/800, 800 ante
Mrityunjay Jha
Mrityunjay Jha

Mrityunjay Jha was just seen having re-entered the tournament after a few-hour hiatus from busting his first bullet. He was under the gun and limped in, getting folds from all players behind until Lee Markholt completed his small blind. Peter Park was in the big blind and raised his option to 3,000. Both Jha and Markholt called.

The flop fell {4-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{3-Clubs} and Markholt checked. Park made a continuation-bet of 3,100 and Jha raised to 7,800. With action back on Markholt, he put in a check-raise, three-betting to 15,000. Park quickly folded and Jha looked back at his stack before putting it forward and announcing he was all in. Markholt called.

Mrityunjay Jha: {q-Spades}{q-Clubs}
Lee Markholt: {4-Spades}{6-Spades}

Jha's ladies were not looking good against Markholt's two pair as he found himself with potentially two cards left in his tournament life. The turn came {5-Diamonds} to give him a total of eight outs to a straight, six more outs to a higher two pair, and the remaining two queens in the deck to give him a set.

The river {q-Hearts} made Jha's two ladies turn into three, giving him the double shortly after re-entering.

Lancaster Turns Up a Set

Level 8 : 300/600, 600 ante
Mike Lancaster
Mike Lancaster

Ray Villaman opened to 1,600 from middle position, and Mike Lancaster three-bet to 4,500 from the hijack. The action folded back around to Villaman, who made the call.

Villaman check-called a 5,000 bet on the {4-Spades}{7-Hearts}{k-Clubs} flop. Villaman checked again on the {q-Hearts} turn, and Lancaster continued the aggression with a 6,000 bet. Villaman called again, bringing the {a-Hearts} on the river.

Villaman checked for a third time, and Lancaster fired the third barrel, this time for 12,000. That bet sent Villaman deep into the tank.

"I think we might have the same hand," Villaman said after a few minutes. He finally made the call, but saw the bad news when Lancaster turned over {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades} for a turned set of queens. Villman mucked his {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds} in frustration as Lancaster collected the pot.

Villaman Cooks Demersseman Before Break

Level 6 : 200/400, 400 ante
Ray Villaman
Ray Villaman

Adam Demersseman raised to 1,200 from under the gun and was called by Glenn Miller in middle position and Ray Villaman, who defended his big blind. The flop came {4-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{5-Spades} and Villaman checked to Demersseman, who made a continuation-bet of 1,800. Miller folded.

Villaman called and the turn came {q-Clubs}. Villaman checked and Demersseman continued, firing another 3,000. Villaman check-raised to 8,000, putting action back on Demerssemean, who went into the tank.

Moments later, Demersseman announced he was all in, cutting out his stack to a total of 28,100. Villaman thought for over two minutes as time expired in Level 6 and the break began. After another minute, he reluctantly threw in chips to call.

Adam Demersseman: {k-Spades}{6-Spades}
Ray Villaman: {a-Spades}{q-Hearts}

Villaman had found himself making the right call with top pair, top kicker, needing to fade the remaining kings and sixes in the deck to score the knockout. The river came {3-Diamonds} to do just that and the dealer leaned forward and scooped Demersseman's chips over to Villaman as Demersseman got up from the table, finding himself dry on chips as the rest of the tournament had gone on break.

Steinman Gets Quick "Double"

Level 6 : 200/400, 400 ante
Ian Steinman
Ian Steinman

On the last hand of the previous level, there was around 3,000 in the pot with four way action on a flop of {j-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{7-Spades}. Niv Decalo had checked from early position to put action on Ian Steinman, who was in middle position and bet 1,500. The next two players to act were Ray Villaman in the hijack and Adam Demersseman in the cutoff. Both players called. Decalo got out of their way and action proceeded with three players still in contention of the pot.

The turn came {q-Clubs} and Steinman, who was first to act, fired another 5,000. Villaman thought for a bit and called. Demersseman called behind.

The river fell {2-Diamonds}. Steinman put out a final bet of 23,000. Villaman went into the tank, setting aside calling chips and seeming as if he were about to make the call. Better judgment won over for him and he sent his cards to the muck. Meanwhile, Demersseman, having had time to think over his decision during Villaman's turn to act, threw out chips to call shortly after action fell upon him.

Steinman tabled {10-Hearts}{9-Hearts} and the dealer announced a queen-high straight. Demersseman mucked.

Villaman remarked on the hand, though it was unclear what he said. It appeared as if he said he had made the right fold, as he was heard talking about how he knew Steinman had something after he had continued betting.

Steinman commented back, saying that he called for a red deuce on the river in his head after receiving two calls on the turn. The dealer had complied and despite not getting all in for a double up, Steinman quickly finds two starting stacks now in front of him with which to play.
