Shainiuk and Chai Continue Setting the Pace at WSOP Circuit Thunder Valley Main Event

Level 24 : 10,000/25,000, 25,000 ante
Roman Shainiuk

Day 2 of the 2019 World Series of Poker Circuit Thunder Valley $1,700 Main Event is in the books, ending with a case of déjà vu.

Play finished at the conclusion of nine 60-minute levels with the final table of nine players remaining. Of those, Day 1 chip leaders Roman Shainiuk (2,315,000) and Paul Chai (2,275,000) find themselves atop the leader board for a second consecutive day.

Shainiuk’s Day 2 trajectory was nearly all upward. Chai started the day a little more slowly but picked up steam around the dinner break to again become one of the largest stacks in the room. Arish Nat (2,080,000) comes in hot on their tails as the only other player over 2 million in chips.

Day 2 Action

Play began with 96 players from the 414-entry field returning to action and go to battle on the felt. Even with hour-long levels, play progressed at a swift pace. Sixty-three players were slated to make it into the money and the field reached that number with two minutes left on the clock before the first break of the day when Nat knocked out David Vu after Vu three-bet all in with ace-king over Nat’s open. Nat had pocket aces and his rockets launched the tournament into the money.

Players such as Jasthi Kumar, Pat Lyons, and Peter Park were among those to fall short of the money on Day 2. Jesse Cohen (56th - $2,532), Brett Murray (31st - $3,552), Alex Condon (23rd - $4,595), and Day 1a chip leader Noel Rodriguez (12th - $9,361) all made it into the money but found their day conclude with trips to the payout desk.

The final nine players will resume for the third and final day at noon local time on Monday with play scheduled to occur until a champion has been crowned. Levels will continue to last one hour in length with play beginning at the start of Level 25 (15,000/30,000/30,000).

Dan Stir
Dan Stir

Dan Stir open shoved for 700,000 from the button, and Paul Chai called from the small blind.

Dan Stir: {a-Hearts}{6-Hearts}
Paul Chai: {a-Spades}{q-Spades}

Board: {k-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{a-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{6-Spades}

The six on the river didn't play for Stir, as Paul Chai took down the pot with two pair, aces and kings, with the {q-Spades} kicker.

The final nine will now redraw to the final table. Play will continue until the end of the current level, and then Day 2 will conclude.

Action folded to Paul Chai, who was on the button and raised to 100,000. Anthony Hugenberg went all in for close to the same amount, putting action on Bobby Pham in the big blind. Pham announced he was all in, coming over the top for a little over 600,000.

"Do you want to see the hand I'm going to fold?" said Chai as he folded {k-Spades}{9-Spades} face up.

Anthony Hugenberg: {a-Diamonds}{3-Spades}
Bobby Pham: {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs}

Hugenberg picked up a small sweat on the flop {10-Spades}{2-Hearts}{4-Clubs} but was unable to improve further as the turn {j-Spades} and river {9-Clubs} completed the runout, sending him to the rail in 11th place.

Arish Nat open raised from middle position, Noel Rodriguez three-bet all in from the small blind, and Nat called, having Rodriguez covered.

Noel Rodriguez: {a-Spades}{3-Spades}
Arish Nat: {q-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}

Board: {q-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{7-Clubs}{j-Spades}

The queen on the flop all but clinched the elimination, and Rodriguez goes out in 12th place. The deep run comes on the back of a final table run in the WSOP Circuit Thunder Valley High Roller for Rodriguez.

Eric Wong Eliminated in 13th Place ($7,650)

Level 23 : 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante
Eric Wong
Eric Wong

Roman Shainiuk was on the button and opened to 65,000, prompting a three-bet shove from Eric Wong out of the small blind for his last 350,000 or so. Terence Reardon folded his big blind and Shainiuk quickly dropped in a chip to call.

Eric Wong: {a-Hearts}{j-Clubs}
Roman Shainiuk: {q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}

Wong was in need of help in order to stay alive in the tournament and he picked up a few wheel outs as the flop came {5-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}. Unfortunately for him, that would be the closest he would get to doubling as the turn {2-Clubs} and river {k-Hearts} sealed his fate, sending him to the rail in 13th place.

Stuart Tuvey Eliminated in 15th Place ($7,650)

Level 22 : 8,000/16,000, 16,000 ante
Stuart Tuvey
Stuart Tuvey

Stuart Tuvey went all in from early position and action folded around to Paul Chai, who was in the small blind. Chai asked for a count, which was totaled to be 132,000.

"Raise!" he then announced, throwing out three newly-added pink T100,000 chips, coming over the top for 308,000 due to the 8,000 he had in the pot from his small blind. He cleared the way and hands were tabled.

Stuart Tuvey: {q-Hearts}{10-Hearts}
Paul Chai: {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds}

"You're way behind!" said Chai in a friendly manner as the two hands were visible on the felt.

"Not way behind," objected Tuvey. His statement was true but not for long as the flop came {9-Spades}{a-Hearts}{j-Clubs}. Though it gave him an open-ended straight draw, Chai now had top pair, top kicker and had increased his equity in the hand as a result.

"Black card," said Chai as the turn came {2-Clubs}.

"Pair the board," he added before the river fell {j-Spades}.

With both of his wishes fulfilled, Tuvey found himself with the second-best hand and tapped the felt, exchanging mutual wishes of a well-played tournament as he stood up and received a payout slip.

Kelsey Hendricks Eliminated in 17th Place ($6,351)

Level 22 : 8,000/16,000, 16,000 ante
Kelsey Hendricks
Kelsey Hendricks

Anthony Hugenberg was in middle position and raised to 35,000. He was three-bet by Noel Rodriguez to 90,000 from the hijack. Action folded around to Kelsey Hendricks, who announced he was all in, cold four-betting from the big blind for his last 380,000 or so. Hugenberg folded and Rodriguez quickly called.

Kelsey Hendricks: {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}
Noel Rodriguez: {a-Spades}{k-Clubs}

The flop came {k-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{5-Spades} to leave Hendricks drawing to running wheel outs to chop or running Broadway outs to double. The turn {8-Spades} left him drawing dead and the river {4-Hearts} finished the runout, resulting in Hendricks' elimination from the tournament in 17th place.

With two eliminations on Table 2, Arish Nat has now been moved to Table 2, Seat 5; the seat formerly occupied by Hendricks.
